Hi I'm Carlea McAvoy I'm combining addition and subtraction of sign numbers in this video. So we've already talked about adding and subtracting and now we're gonna say what if we had more than one thing to do or several things to do in one problem well I'm still going on the idea that you're gonna change your subtraction into addition, and so every time I see a problem like for example number one I'm gonna change any subtraction problems into addition. Now this one starts off with negative 4 I never change the first term and I'm not changing any of the addition parts either. So this is still gonna be the same now I'm finally gonna make a change but if I don't want subtraction I'm going to change the subtraction to addition and because I made that one change I need to make the second chain which is changing the sign of the following term, So that becomes 7. And then I have an addition problem here. I don't want to change addition I want addition so that's the changes I'm gonna make. Now I'm gonna do my process that I've talked about before which is combine all your negatives. so you have negative 4 and negative 3 that's all negatives negative 7 and combine your positive 7 and 1 that's 8. And now that you've combined those you're ready to say what do I have more of you have more positives by how many by 1. So the answer would be positive 1. Ok it would be great for you to pause the video try these problems without me and then see how you do. Hopefully you do that now I'm gonna leave this one the same so the next one do I change it or do I keep it the same? Well it's subtraction I always want to change the subtraction. So I'm gonna make a change. Subtraction becomes addition the sign of the next term has to change negative 8 becomes positive 8... What about minus 9? Yep I'm going to change it because that's subtraction this is subtraction becomes addition what about the 9 well the 9 was positive. So I'm gonna make that a negative 9. I could put parentheses around it or not not going to in this case and then I'm going to leave this one the same because it's an addition. I don't want to change negative numbers I want to change subtraction to addition.... And now I can combine my like terms or not like turned out my like sign terms. So I have 7 & 8 which is 15. plus negative 9 and negative 12 where they're all negative so I'm just gonna get more and more negatives and it turns out to be negative 21, and then I asked myself do I have more negatives or more positives? I have more negatives have more negatives by 6. So I have negative six again if you can't...
