[Music] good afternoon i'm jerry shadel a professor at the salk institute and director of the san diego nathan shock center i want to thank the age organizers for allowing this session where we can highlight some of the activities of our new nathan shock center for the basic biology of aging research as the name indicates the san diego center is actually a collaboration between three research institutes on the la jolla research mesa the salk institute for biological studies the samford burn and previous molecular discovery institute and the university of california san diego as you've heard already from the other salk from the other shock center directors so far each nathan shock center has a theme and the theme of the san diego center is to tackle the heterogeneity of aging which is a problem in uh the aging field that i think is needs to be addressed systematically in order to be able to intervene successfully to increase the health span of people i don't need to really illuminate for this crowd what what is meant by the heterogeneity of aging but just by way of introduction i think everybody as well well appreciates that there is not a direct relationship between our chronological age and what we now refer to as our biological age and what that means is that individuals of specific age types say 60 years old for example don't necessarily show identical age-related phenotypes that is you can have individuals who are relatively fit 60 year olds and those individuals who are already succumbing to age-related declines and perhaps other types of age-related pathology and so there's this heterogeneity at each individual chronological age in aging phenotypes that we simply don't understand at this point of course the heterogeneity this heterogeneity increases as we age so uh in a relatively young population shown here you can see that most people are relatively fit and maybe a few people are starting to show signs of aging but those signs of aging are probably different in different individuals not probably it is for sure but if you look at an older population you can really begin to see that there's a market heterogeneity in age-related uh phenotypes uh where many people are still remaining quite fit whereas others are becoming frail for example or again succumbing to age-related diseases and we really don't understand this but we know that it's an intersection between intrinsic factors like our inherited genetics intersecting with extrinsic factors such as our lifestyle and environment that are driving these differences in an aging trajectory even if you can subtract out to the best of our ability genetics any environment there's still an intrinsic level of heterogeneity and aging that's demonstrated here with this experiment from c elegans roundworm just showing a typical lifespan curve of this model organism you can see that [Music] individuals are dying at different rates so some individuals are dying early and some individuals are dying...
