Move heterogenous gender
- [Voiceover] Hello, this is David Lee from PreventConnect and welcome to today's PreventConnect web conference, Harmful Gender Norms: Moving beyond binary and heteronormative approaches to prevent sexual and domestic violence. PreventConnect is a national project of the California Coalition Against Sexual assault sponsored by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The views and information provided in this web conference do not necessarily represent the official views of the US government, the CDC or CALCASA. Today's objectives for what we intend to do is to engage in a candid conversation around gender and gender identity, the problems with narrow definitions of gender and gender identity, and the implications for prevention practice. We hope to share real-world examples of policies, practices, and programs that reflect broader understanding of gender and gender identity. And to identify tools and resources to help strengthen prevention efforts through a broader understanding of gender and gender identity for partnering and engaging with LGBTQ communities. We wanna be able to look at pronouns, and that pronouns are important. We know that pronouns, when speaking in the third-person replaces a person name. This is really not preferred, it would be great if we could always refer to people as their name and who they are, though we have created these shortcuts of speaking in third-person. And so we wanna be able to, while pronouns imply something about gender, they don't declare someone's gender identity. So I myself use a he, him, his as my preferred pronouns. What we would like do is have the practice of being aware and kind of intentional about pronouns. So can you please tell me what pronouns you use. Let's go in our audience and see. And I can see people joining, as we look through the types of pronouns that you use in your audience. We feel it's really important to recognize and honor the different ones, so I see ranges of she, her, hers. I see some theys. Him, his, hers, some people using they and them. And so there's a full range that we wanna recognize that everyone has the opportunity to select and they do, and someone pointed out, Liz pointed out, prefers to use Liz's name. So I'm trying to model that in being able to move forward as opposed to being able to use the pronouns. So thank you for having the discussion to realize the range, that some people use a wide range. I see someone who has she, her, hers, they, their, them, it and them. So there's a full range, and I see, some people listing their names also. So thank you very much for doing that. I do wanna now pass it over to the hosts of today's web conference from the Prevention Institute. PreventConnect has been working with Prevention Institute for the 11 years of PreventConnect. And actually, I'm really pleased 'cause today, I am here at Prevention Institute sitting in the room with our colleagues. And so we have...
