hey YouTube JP Dillon today we're gonna look at servicing the BS our style record changer these were made in the millions between about nineteen sixty eight in about nineteen seventy eight seventy nine there may be a broader window there were BS are mechanisms before this and some spiffier versions and high fidelity versions quote unquote this is the most common one you'll see easily identified by the J shaped control center with the speed selector off start auto and record selector assembly up there and there are a variety of options different platters different tone arms but this is the most common variant that you'll see with a magnetic head shell these were usually sold as stand-alones or on high-end consoles in the 1970s the cartridge that was usually autumn less either a Pickering and a DC or insure like an N seventy five or something like that but anyway the common thing you'll see with these is that they're frozen solid they're just they're all gunked up they don't want to work they don't want to turn on this is all stuck up this is very stiff don't force them these plastic things will break off so we're going to show you how to do a basic service on one clean it up and get it working again probably the most important thing is to identify whether you have a plastic platter or a metal platter now if you have a plastic platter it will usually be one formed thing like this and if that is the case and the way that you get this off is different than the way that you get a metal one off largely due to the application and concentrations of heat if you use the method for the metal platter on the plastic one it will warp and distort and then it will never work right likewise if you use the method for the plastic one on the metal one it will take forever to get it off but what you need to do is apply heat and penetrating well to that center bearing there to loosen it up and get it so that you can pull the platter off so what do is we're going to grab a soldering gun of about 120 watts and heat up that center portion there and just be patient and as we apply force upward and we should be able to get that thing loose and off so let's go ahead and grab our soldering gun and get to it so I'm going to go ahead and just apply heat as soon as I noticed this start to smoke a little warm up that snow I know the tips hot and I'm just gonna mess this in here and let the heat transfer to the bearing it takes a little bit but the purpose here is is to warm it up and that causes the hardened grease to liquefy enough so that you can...
