today we're going to discuss the upcoming changes happening with basic auth over at Microsoft now basic auth is a system that's been used for a number of years to connect servers Services API endpoints and in essence all basic auth is is that whenever you sign into an application the application will send a username and password with every request and these credentials are often stored locally on the machine and traditionally basic auth is turned on by default because it's easy and it's simple to set up now Simplicity isn't necessarily a bad thing but it makes it significantly easier for attackers and malicious actors to capture user credentials and of course this increases the risk of data breaches and security breaches now Microsoft actively recommends consumers and customers adapt to some sort of security strategy such as zero trust you know which states never trust always verify specifically what is changing Microsoft is removing the ability to use basic off completely now this decision does require all consumers and customers to move from apps that use basic auth over to a modern auth environment now modern off includes things such as multi-factor Windows hello sign on with pin or use mobile app to receive a code and this change is going live on October 1st of 2022. once the go live date happens basic auth will be gone completely
