hi today we are talking about signatures standard versus non-standard presented to you by the Pennsylvania Association of notaries let's first talk about you the notary and your signature when you are notarizing documents every time you place your official stamp down you must have an original signature you must sign your name as it appears on your notary Commission and your stamp and signatures should be close to one another without overlapping now let's take a closer look at your signature you have two options when signing your name as the notary you can either sign legibly so that your signature is easily read or sign your preferred signature which may not be legible and then print in your name adjacent to your signature now let's talk about your customer signature as the notary you will need to witness or verify your customer signature most common for notarization x' is the customer signing their own name John Doe is signing john doe's name a common question that we hear is how should they sign their name for example can Jon sign John Thomas doe we recommend as a best practice to tell your customer to sign as it appears in the document it does run the risk of getting rejected if the signature and the printed name in the document does not match now let's take a look at some non-standard signatures some customers may not be able to sign or fully sign their name because of things like illiteracy or disability in this case these signatures would be considered non-standard the three that we are going to take a look at here today would be a mark or stamp signature assisted signature and a signature by a designated individual we also recommend when working with a non-standard signature to have two other witnesses available for the transaction let's first take a look at a signature by mark a common mark might be something like an X after your customer makes their mark you should print their name underneath that it is his or her signature and have your two witnesses signed somewhere close to that signature next we will take a look at a stamped signature this is when your customer has their signature made onto a stamp your customer would simply place their stamped signature on the document and then we would have our two witnesses signed somewhere close to that stamped signature next we will take a look at an assistant signature an assistant signature is used if your customer cannot make a mark or stamp on the document they will need the help of another person to actually help them sign the document as the notary you should not be the person helping the customer sign the person helping the customer sign would hold the pen while the customer would place their hand on top and then they would sign the document together our two witnesses then would sign somewhere close the last non-standard signature that we will look at is a signature by a designated individual your customer would need to communicate to you that they are allowing another individual to sign on behalf of them don't forget to have your two witnesses present the individual would then sign their own name and state that they are signing for the actual customer and your two witnesses would sign somewhere close to that signature thank you for watching this course on signatures you
