Permit age field
if we could move on to education now obviously i know you briefly you spoke about the international schools and things like that um let's so let's start from um basically the lower insulins upwards so uh working a working class family moves to to morocco and obviously the first thing they're thinking about is education for their children um there is other international schools at the lower end of the of the scale okay all right so remember i told you i moved to ephraim because they had an affordable international school and it was secular it was a great education and i cut a great deal first three kids were free the first three kids were normal tuition maybe 500 300 and 200 a month but then all the other kids after that were free that was the deal so for me it was affordable that is the one negative about tangier and in all of the major cities the international education system is expensive it's incredibly expensive it's unbelievable it's back-breakingly expensive i want to make sure you get that point so if you want your kid to have a high-level international english language education don't come to tangier because the school maybe not even morocco because they have great schools but they are so expensive they like they're laid out like american high schools american private schools but when i tell you they're expensive they are for one kid the school here and i had three of them in the school american school of tangier it was eleven thousand dollars per year per kid now deer hams dollars top rate education you know school's been around since 1955 kids go from there to all the ivy league schools you know everything you would imagine debate team united nations this field trips all of that but it is a school for rich kids and for me i had never had any intention of taking on those type of expenses in my hedge remove but i got trapped and and and i warned other brothers to not get in the same trap if you come here with kids at a certain age and they don't speak the arabic language you don't have many options academically because while they are good moroccan private schools or their comprehensive educations you know math science english french you name it they're in arabic or they're in french and they're not like egypt my understanding is that egypt they have a component with the schools where they take foreigners and they bring them up to speed in arabic they don't have that here you just drop them in and then they and and and hope that they pick it up and so for kids that are older like right they had 15 and 16 year olds so they only had two years of high school left to finish they came here too old to start from that arabic get the arabic down and then go to an arabic private school so i had to bite the bullet because they wanted to go to medical school and this and that and so i had to get them that good high school education i'm hoping they go to medical school in malaysia and now that you mentioned it i you have that's my goal but the the point on the international education is if you are intent on your kids getting an english language international education unless you are rolling in bucks do not come to morocco because some of the other schools which are equally excellent in rabat and casablanca they're more money so that's a thousand dollars a month u.s dollars per kit don't do it and uh but you know there's there's the university here yeah al aquain university which is in english it's accredited it's well respected you can go from there to graduate schools in the u.s and europe and everywhere else that's actually cheaper than the uh than the international private schools for the kids up to 12th grade i think it was 5 000 a year i want to say for for college and uh in beautiful campus you guys uh google a la hawaiian university and you'll see it beautiful good education but it's very secular and i said to my two um 18 year olds at the time very social environment it's uh it's it's on that isolated little mountain in ifran so it's you know it's kind of a closed community um it's good education it's comprehensive and the main thing about education is it's what people believe it is so if you get an ally foreign university degree and you're in the morocco or you're in the middle east it's highly respected so those are the international options and i assume you're going to ask me you've asked me about the the local options so we have moroccan public schools and you see kids piling in and out of them i don't recommend those i've never been in one but just from what i hear from people that send their kids to the school and what i see from the kids coming out of the school it seems like they're rather wild and unorganized and kids are you know we call it rowdy maybe they're just getting out of school but they're jumping around and screaming and hollering this it just wouldn't be the environment that i would put my kids in a public school and i say that and that's my opinion there are brothers i know that that went to public schools and uh alhamdulillah there was one brother out of casablanca i think his kids went to moroccan public school and i think his daughters are all these african-american i think his daughters are all doctors now they've been 20 30 years medical doctors so uh so the answer to your riddle is the answer to your question is i would avoid the public schools like the plague because you know the kids can be rough and and it can be a challenge and i hear that the teachers make in the market schools two or three hundred maybe four hundred dollars a month so they're not motivated so then there's something in between and that in between is the moroccan private schools that are operated by individual owners that get them accredited and those are a notch up the facilities are better the parents that are paying for these have higher expectations of the children they appear more organized they have a strong curriculum um and even in the public schools the curriculum must be pretty strong because they have a comprehensive test that i'm not sure many american kids could pass at the end of it and i say that because when my kids went to al akhawang they were in school with moroccan kids that went through the moroccan school system and those kids had completed calculus by the time they went to college so in some ways if you can weather the storm and fit in the public schools may not be as terrible an option as i think they are but the private schools to me are the better option uh the equivalent of about 80 90 us dollars a month per kid classrooms don't appear to be overcrowded very orderly very civilized the administration that i have engaged with have been excellent so that is an option and about 80 90 a month now there's one other option and this is what drove me to tangier and that is is that they have what they call trying to think of the word in english but they're islamic schools and they're governed by an islamic uh authority and government sponsored and there's one in particular called imam nafiya and this school is absolutely free and it has an islamic everything is islamic matter of fact when a kid goes there five years old or six or seven i think they maybe start at six before they do anything they memorize the quran so the kids maybe four years just quran memorization and there's some arabic in there also and and there are girls schools and there are boys schools and my understanding is that there are 16 branches of this school and they're the number one producer of uh female haphizus of koran uh in uh and certainly in tangier if not morocco so hundreds upon hundreds of kids i put my girls in there three of them uh and that this is the place i rented the apartment next to beautiful facility is this a wonderful thing hearing all these young girls reciting koran and then once they've memorized the quran then they go into the comprehensive school program where they do you know secular studies french english math science history and they graduate at about 18 and they've got a recognized high school diploma and their hot pieces of quran and they have completed all their studies amongst all females so that was and that is to me the best option for the girls and there's a male version there's a boy's version for that there's a boy's version and i'll tell you that story also but for the girls i pulled my girls out to master arabic because again we're back to having that command of the american arabic language allows you to get so much more out of the education system because these schools are not set up to bring you up to speed in arabic so when you walk in the door they're going to greet you in arabic and that's all you're going to hear because they don't speak english so the kids can be feel a little isolated and they have a problem integrating and the kids that do speak english and they have them from europe at this particular school they have them from america and there's a boarding school component so at least half of the girls are there on a boarding school and some from malaysia they happen from malaysia also so you'll tend to start to gravitate to the people that speak your language and then you don't pick up the language and so they weren't picking up the language they were memorizing the quran but they weren't picking up the language they weren't making friends they weren't really getting the benefit of the instruction from the the teacher who didn't speak in english so what i did and i have a good friend abdullahi who's probably going to watch this he's a happy as a quran quran teacher part-time teacher at the school i arranged for him to take the kids out was supposed to be for six months master arabic to a degree where they could integrate at the same time maintain their quran and uh and then with the intent to reintroduce them to the school with stronger arabic and not behind in the quran you've got to be flexible in these environments and so this was a an adjustment that i made and hum did it was going great and then a last one until i had decided that corona is what the world needed and so the school closed down at some point i stopped bringing them just because of the movements became difficult so now we're just now starting to get back into a program inshallah in january will will re-institute the the koran arabic private school with him and it was going great because i think i had seven kids in there they were getting that individualized arabic they were still keeping up with koran and they were improving greatly so i would just tell people that haven't made hydra if you think your hijra is a year off get your kids right now into an intensive arabic program so that when they get here they can step into an arabic arabic program whatever grade they are if they're ninth grade eighth grade first grade just take that year you know keep up with the the abcs and the one two but get them that arabic language is going to give you so many more options so many more affordable options from an act from a uh from an academic perspective so this is what i would really strongly suggest if there's a weak spot and if there's a business opportunity it's in that if you can develop and then some of the brothers here have talked about it in english language international islamic school much like iis and malaysia there's a real market for it because people want to learn english some of them speak english they think they're starting to teach english at earlier grades now and so when they figure out you're american they're going to hello how are you good to meet you you know they want to to learn english and it is a level of respect this place was colonized by the french so at some point the educated people were french-speaking so if you speak french and arabic there's there's you're at a higher grade in society but if you speak english oh you're the man so they want to learn english english is the the language of science and politics and so english has come but it's not here to the degree of it's in the academic environments where people can step in and get an english-based education right um okay so still sticking to the educational part um so okay our family coming from the uk or us and they're interested in putting their child in those islamic schools and i think this is like a uh this is not answering two questions at the same time because i think we're going to talk about visas and being able to stay um is that a possible way in like obviously for example i want to put my child into this into this islamic school or even for um an adult to join an islamic university is that a way that um um is an opportunity for families to do that basically so are you asking will will putting your kid in school get you a residency permit of some sort yeah or if not the child the than the parents yeah okay so and again i will always tell you what i don't know and i do know i don't know exactly that but i'll tell you this there was an american friend of mine family that they brought their daughter here the american family she's been studying in senegal and they brought her daughter here to go to the school that my kids are at and they got her enrolled officially and all of that stuff and i believe they got some type of some type of residency that allowed for sure for the daughter to be here that she was legal i don't know what they got for the parents because the parents weren't living here but for an american you can come here and stay three months without a visa they have to stamp you in the past in the airport so i don't know if they ever applied for residency but i know the daughter had a a residency um based on her academics based on her being in school as did my uh my kids my older kids you're unsure about um okay so somebody somebody 18 19 20 upwards who wants to uh involved in islamic university for example you don't know whether my kids that were 20 21 years old they got some level of residency acceptance based on them being students but if you're asking as a 40 year old that is not in a islamic university maybe some type of private tutoring or something like that can you get residency i don't think so i think it's going to have to be tied to a recognized formal institution um to to use that as your anchor for residency but residency is not difficult and i'm assure you i'm assuming you're going to touch on that also you
