everybody wanted to make a little tutorial video today about something I've been that people have asked me to do or show them how to do several times so this is gonna be on removing an imprinted name on the cover of a leather Bible now this is only goatskin cowhide will be different because of the smoother grain you might not get this grain back with goat skin since the the variations in grain or are irregular and a little deeper it's a little more forgiving I've already removed the last name on here this James but you can already you can still see there's you can see the grain in the stamping we're gonna try to get that to raise back up the idea is to hydrate the leather you can still see an imprint where I removed the last name but you can see the the leather grain still and that will get better that'll raise over time the more you work with it and moisten it it'll it'll it'll come back so I already like I said there was already a last name there and I removed it so here's the toes you're going to need wd-40 a q-tip cotton ball and a little toothpick that we use these to do with shish kebobs or whatever but like a toothpick would work as well so alright so here's the idea what you want to do is take the the wd-40 and you just barely touch the trigger and you put just a little bit on the cover and you just cover the name alright you cover it and you really want to let it sit but you want to let that to sink in and hydrate so that's point yeah that was just a little squirt so now you'll take your little toothpick or dowel or whatever and you're just gonna lightly scratch just lightly scratch over the name and we'll do this I'll probably do this process about 12 times so we'll just scratch over the name and and you'll start seeing it the gold start to lift and and the grains start to come back in these impressions so I've got part of the letter right there that's just gonna got to uh raised back up so and I let that wd-40 kind of sink in and if you've got the time to allow this this to sink in soak in then then it's going to make it even easier for you so done that I'm going to take the the q-tip and just kind of wipe it over and let that the properties of that wd-40 really kind of break down that that gold I'm gonna wipe off the rest of this excess so they see the the James is a little bit lighter than it was and I'm gonna do it again just one little squirt kind of make sure it covers the name and I'm going to continue this process as you can see I'm scratching it and you see that the gold is getting a little weaker and it'll start to come up and be less apparent you just got to keep keeping this it takes about 15-20 minutes I'm gonna stop the video and restart it and kind of show you a midway point where we're at so be right back so here you can see I've been out at about five or ten minutes and james's has come off or it's coming off but it's it's definitely working so just continue the process we'll put a little dab and I'm probably put it over the hole where the hole name was and because there's still some little remnants of gold left and let just remember to let that kind of soak a little bit just a little bit and now don't rub it too hard or you'll start rubbing it especially if you have colored leather you'll start rubbing some of the color off so just be real gentle also using this cotton ball once you've kind of scraped you can see where this has gotten so loose where I've scraped and scratched and scraped that it's starting to really kind of get hazy the Gold's getting a little hazy and and it's you can see it's getting so I can move it around and you can see it moving around to the edge of that toothpick so once that happens I'll get this this cotton ball and I will just kind of wipe it hard just to give a little friction and it starts removing that gold a little bit better so I'll come back with the finished product alright so I've really only worked on this for about 15 minutes total I probably could have made one single video but it's you can kind of see there's an impression there and the grains are a little different in that area but if you work it back and forth over time it will they'll start to lift now you might not get that that gloss back but I'll try to figure out how I can can help get that you kind of scratch that off but if you can live with that little dim a little bit of dim leather right there then you'll probably be fine I'll let this sit on there just a little bit longer and then I'll I'll wipe it down but you can really come just barely faintly see where the name was and and that only happens when you wet it down so anyway so we'll just keep doing that process until you're satisfied with it so you just kind of let that wd-40 kind of sit on it I know that kind of unnerves some folks about putting on their leather Bible if you want to get some wax paper to put under here just to kind of protect the block I've done this a few times so I'm really pretty comfortable with it anyway so my again we'll do that we soaked it then we kind of scratch scraped a little bit where the whole name was and and really this scratching helps to relieve that that pressure or that that compression of the grains I had one of these where I had removed the name and it and it still looked kind of dim and over over the course of time those grains you know lifted back up so anyway so you can see where I'm I'm trying to rake these grains to where they lift back up that's the whole point now the gold the gold is going to come off so the really the goal of this is to lift the impression the gold comes off fairly easy just with time it comes off fairly easy so like I said just lifting that impression is what's what the goal is here now I can't it's hard one hand is normally have the other hand on the Bible kind of holding it but just kind of use this little cotton ball to apply a little friction and and then again you can see that there's an impression and a little change in the color for that stamping was but you move it back and forth and you're stretching and compress those grains and you can start seeing those grains come back in that in that area so that is how you do it that's how I do it at least I know it looks a little bit it looks it doesn't look like brand new but it's better than having to deal with somebody else's name on your Bible so anyway thanks for watching hopefully this was helpful god bless
