Print byline witness
hi and welcome to ten minute asks I'm Kerry and today we're going to be focusing on the GCSE topic of newspaper terminology this is relevant if you're studying journalism so gonna go through those key terms and then try some practice questions ready let's go three key questions wanna look at today question one what key terminology do I need to know and how do i label a newspaper these are both things that you need to know for the exam to jor-el's and newspaper journalism and three practice it with kit we're going to try some exams tell questions okay are you ready let's go is some revision hopefully you're familiar with somebody's already you can see in red we have the definitions and then in green we have the key terms that you need to know so you need to know what these are you need to know how to put these together to make your own articles both in your coursework and in the exam and you also need to be able to identify them and dibble them in an actual newspaper page so that might be an exam question so if you just pause this video take a few minutes and write them out or try matching them up and see if you can come up with the answers and then we'll go through them together [Music] pants and let's see how we got on we'll just go through these together okay so number one the short Court left it from an interview placed in the front to couch readers i entice and read further that is Apple code pulls you in any supply of information so it can be a document witness spokesperson that is what we call the source next in the list then we have single line given a name and if applicable the job title of the writer of the article and that's called file a brief introduction or biography of the writer apiece supplying the journalist credentials we call that blurb publication title and its logo forms for example the son the dealing meal so the Newman newspaper basically that is masthead comes immediately after the headline printed larger and functions as a brief introduction to the story so that's its trapline the topic sentence uses the first sentence in the piece it's usually bigger and bold as an introduction so that's the stand first the brief descriptive line which explains a photograph or an image its caption almost like a tagline is a short phrase usually in the Frog cover it's used to prayers and sell the papers that's puff similar than to a copper line it appears in the cover of a magazine or newspaper gives information on what's inside usually in a box as a plug now at format which involves organizing arranging the tax into vertical columns its columns the mean or the lead story we call that the splash and the heading of an article functioning as a title and a way of catching the eye that's a headline so how did you do as well as none the key terminology associated with newspapers you also must be able to recognize key job roles in newspaper journalism and to know the duties for each person and so the lion of hierarchy or the chain of command so have it for you here publisher at least onto editor we split up into section editors in the advertising team as section editors then have a team of correspondents and reporters and then below that we have the sub editors and also the photographers also a key role so I've got their descriptions here if they're JD's and red you can see they're all mixed up and I just want you to pause this video and see if you can write out in a piece of paper which which definition or description matches each job role okay so good luck okay so how did you get on let's just go through the answers together okay so publisher then so the publisher is actually the owner of the whole paper so financially you know they have a lot of responsibility there but they also hold all the staff accountable especially the editor to make sure they are tier to the house style and that they're producing the kind of people that they want it to be so they are kind of the boss of the whole thing editor then they have a really active role and the paper obviously unlike the publisher so they lead the team the whole meetings with the section editors they make final decisions and content and they also hire and fire staff so I've gained a real position of high authority their section editors then so they have responsibility for one section of the paper so it might be the sports or the features or fashion or travel so they focus just in that one area and they manage the team of correspondents and reporters and sub-editors then we have advertising team so what they're doing is they're responsible for trying to reach out to businesses sell advertising space organize the content to be put in the paper it's really important as a source of revenue for newspapers especially with the competition online then correspondents and so they're a special kind of reporter so they specialize in particular area might be sport might be politics sometimes it's even a particular country and that will be their area of expertise Rather's general reporter researchers interviews travels to location writes articles so they can cover any story so betters then they're the ones who do the tracking so they proofread everything format the pages site and final headlines they check for legal issues and then pass that on you know above them so very important role as well and finally the photographer so they were role in is to reach out to local businesses and to try and sell advertising space place on paper and organize it and very important to get that so for Avenue especially for print papers you know it's really high they're making their money I have to sit with kit so here I have for you some exams tell questions there's some more in the next page so just grab the apricot pan pause this and then see if you can answer these questions [Music] [Music] okay and your final question then is a little and exercise so here we have a newspaper front page you can see the oil is pointing out and I think I've got it for you all together yes yes so see if you can identify the eight different features good luck okay so how did you do we're just going through the answers and you can mark yourself and remember your total then should be out of fifteen so difficulties then here are some of the difficulties so you need to competition from online news websites you can't get the stories immediately I said online oowo news websites can do so it's slower way of getting the news a decline in seals and of course the cost of printing puff them so hopefully you got a puff as a statement the ins to prayers and to students with the paper which helps us sell it a plug then superimposed in front cover it provides details of what is inside usually in some kind of big colorful box one purpose of a pill quote then so its purpose is to grab attention to the reader to read oh and so remember those are those large quotes taken from an article and placed somewhere in the middle of the columns name to Judy's of an editor so many trees from again two marks for this so hire and fire people delete the team of suction editors final say on stories and also they can make the final decisions on things like headlines and they can also take legal issues further if they think there's one kind of issue there and they also need to adhere to the house style of the paper so give yourself a mark then that'll be out of let's see yet the market it and then with seven questions on the next slide and let's see how we get on with those okay so in this exercise you had to label this front page newspaper without the key terms so again potential exam question so six we can see it's pointing to words they've Scottish newspaper or Scottish Telegraph so that's the name of the newspaper so we know that is called the mastheads give yourself one mark if you got button and then the next one seven it's pointing out where it says Queen to visit adverse do so it's obviously your headline that's number seven then headline and it is pointing at the Kelly Davis news editors so that's telling you her job and her name's that's a byline 9 then is pointing out the first sentence of peace today as a special day for Scotland the Queen visits a couple city in famous ad for the first time so his first sentence it's bigger than the rest of the tax and so we call that sound first okay then here at the bottom maybe it's not so clear but it's pointing out the way it's divided up into sections and we call those columns very good way of organising writing Lavin's point at this huge quote from the article so we know that is a pull quote code and 12 an is this is a lie describing the picture so that is a caption and finally then number 13 is pointing at quality news since 1899 flutter in the paper so that is okay so give yourself a final mark then out of 15 and hopefully you'll see what you need to revise again and what you know already we enjoy today's lesson front it useful I'm Kerry and I also teach other G says he journalism topics you can see the full lists here on the left so if you enjoyed this in five useful and please do subscribe to my channel 10 minute lessons thank you and bye
