Save companion credit card
hey I'm Daniel so I live in Alaska where everyone who owns a credit card or wants to own a credit card wants to own the Alaska Airlines signature Visa card this is the censored version as a credit card member myself I think the obsession is kind of crazy and wild as everyone who is living here is like trying to claw their way to get this card as far as like an Alaskan flex goes there's like catching a salmon with your bare hands owning a dog team for transportation owning the Alaska Airlines signature card which gives you all the benefits that it does and then like the only flex really higher than that is owning your own plane to where you don't need airline miles so I thought it'd be cool to make a video about what all the hype is for and why this card is so sought after by everyone in Alaska so I have to preface this I'm not being sponsored by Bank of America I don't get anything for this I don't even have a referral link for you to use to help me get bonus points on this card I'm literally getting nothing the only thing I ask though is that you hit that like button because it helps me out with the YouTube algorithm now honestly as a standalone credit card the Bank of America Alaska Airlines card is pretty good and if you live on the west coast you have probably seen or heard of this card at least once before the Alaska Airlines card is actually one of the top-rated travel cards by nerd wallet and it's a real powerhouse if you travel in the west coast currently the Alaska Airlines signature card has a 40,000 miles signing bonus and you also get the Alaska Airlines companion fare the minimum spent on this card to reach that bonus is $2,000 or more in the first 90 days of opening your account now those 40,000 miles that you get have a valuation of 1.8 cents per mile which means just from the mile so you are getting a 720 dollar value just by signing up for this card and these miles actually have one of the highest valuations across almost all cars and companies this is even higher than the chase points after you have the Sapphire reserved basically if you're a credit card nerd like me you know that means that these things are really damn valuable those 40,000 miles are enough by themselves to book a flight from just about anywhere in the US you can even go New York to Hawaii if you wanted to now I do have to mention that these 40,000 bonus points that you get for signing up aren't actually that easy to get because Alaska Airlines has a nor Toria sprog for denying people for this card but that actually just adds to the clout that this card carries basically if you're in Alaska and if you have this card if you're spotted having this card it's an ultimate baller status people know it's hard to get so when you're spotted having it it's almost more clout than if you had the sapphire Reserve or the American Express Platinum card but with this signup bonus you also get a companion fare which you also receive annually and that's the part of this card that really sets it apart from just about every other card because with this companion fare you can bring in an additional passenger with you on the same flight for just an extra $99 and some taxes and fees and you get this perk with your card every single year regardless of how much you use that particular card and this cannot be emphasized enough I mean if you're not in the credit card world already and already know what this means there's no way for me to explain how crazy it is that a $75 a year card can save you just this much in-flight travel every single year for example let's say you took a flight that costs $800 which actually is pretty easy to do with Alaska Airlines because you can fly somewhere to like Mexico or Hawaii or Costa Rica if you're traveling with someone using this companion fare you can save almost $700 on this flight which makes the annual fee like completely irrelevant and because of this there are actually a lot of people that collect multiple iterations of this card and pay that $75 annual fee every single year multiple times over just to get an extra companion fair that you they can use to fly pretty much wherever they want you also get a few other relevant perks such as free checked bags where you can check one bag for up to you and six other people which actually is a saving of $30 per bag you get discounts at the Alaska Lounge and in-flight purchases and of course this car doesn't have any foreign transaction fees so when you go to Mexico or Costa Rica you can use it and not worry about all those fees that other credit cards usually like to charge you also get three miles per dollar spent with Alaska Airlines and one dollar per mile on any other purchase and sure you could argue that cards like Chase or American Express or even the city double cash card actually gets you a slightly better return than that one mile to one dollar conversion but this card is just so competitive that it still ranks really high against all these others for example if you consider this 1.8 cent conversion from dollars to miles and if you look at a regular annual spend of say $20,000 on this card and then compare that to the city double cash card that same $20,000 you're only really considering a difference of $40.00 per year and for most people who aren't credit card nerds who don't care about churning that $40 d year difference doesn't register it doesn't make any sense for them to carry two cards in their wallet and make decisions between having two cards it's just so much easier to have one card maybe miss out on $40 that they probably didn't even know existed and then get all the miles with Alaska Airlines I know this doesn't make a huge difference but I guess what it all boils down to what I'm trying to say is that when the Chase Sapphire Reserve charges you a $450 annual fee and then you look at something like the Alaska Airlines card which is really comparable in value the $450 annual fee just doesn't make any sense now one of the drawbacks to this card is that three times bonus miles only actually works with Alaska Airlines purchases so if you fly Delta or Southwest or whatever else you like to do those purchases won't count for that extra bit of bonus miles but if you live in Alaska you have to first get out of Alaska before you want to go anywhere else and coincidentally pretty much the only way to get out of Alaska is to fly Alaska Airlines really they're almost the exclusive airline that flies you out of here so if you want to get out of Alaska before you go anywhere else you're gonna have to fly Alaska so for Alaska residents people that live in Alaska this card really will be the most valuable because all of those rewards and bonuses and the companion fare will be used if they ever fly but even for those living in the Pacific Northwest if you're not stranded in Alaska like I am that crazy sign of bonus and the companion fare still make this a ridiculously good deal now Alaska Airlines is Seattle based so if you're not kind of on the west coast you might not be able to get every benefit from it but if you are on the west coast you can use it just for a quick vacation of Hawaii or Mexico or Costa Rica or really anywhere along that coast but they do fly to other states so for example if you live in New York City you can use that companion fare to fly yourself and your spouse from New York City to Hawaii is that camera flipped do I have to do that backwards it this way like that for example if you live in New York and want to go to Hawaii with your spouse that companion fare will save you on one of those tickets now even though I am a resident of Alaska and whenever I want to go somewhere I have to first get out of Alaska I actually don't use the Alaska Airlines card as my primary card because I have like a gorilla in points with them instead I would rather use my Chase Sapphire Reserve and my wife's Chase Sapphire Preferred and all of our chase business cards because those will get us points that we can use outside of the Alaska Air Hubb and that's exactly what we're gonna do when we go to Europe next year and that is one of the other downsides to the Alaska Airlines card is it's not quite versatile enough to be my one use card and that I do have to have other cards to kind of supplement my travel because Alaska Airlines can't quite fly everywhere but for advanced credit card users it's just another card that you can put in your wallet and get that signup bonus and bank that plus if you fly Alaska if you live in any one of the states than Alaska flies - you can use this card in its annual companion bonus to probably save more money than you otherwise could with any other $75 annual fee card thanks for watching the video guys I really actually hope you liked it if you did I would greatly appreciate if you could hit that like button because it helps me out with the YouTube algorithm and then if you also hit the subscribe button with the Bell notification I will see you in the next one
