hey guys i'm so excited to show you our flip through of through the eyes of a volcanologist you are absolutely going to love it um as is usual during our flip-throughs i'm going to let you know what has changed in our units and and what we've come up with that's new um whether it's from customer feedback that we implemented or just new ideas that we came up with ourselves just letting you know which direction we're going and then after that we will hop right into the flip room right now you can just kind of stare at this screen as i go over a few points of change and then we will get into the physical flip through while i'll show you what is inside the unit but please don't skip this portion because this is important about our units moving forward so number one this unit is all digital which means you do not have to print it so for the parents that prefer uh viewing their journals through tablets or cell phones or screencasting or however they want their children to view their journals they can absolutely do that any written activities can be done on your own notebook paper and so for the ones who want to save on ink and paper this is going to be perfect obviously you can still print it if you want to but it is not a requirement so that's point number one number two is we are continuing to color code all of our units our customers like that and we thought about it and we're really thinking it's a really great way to allow a better read aloud for everybody in our earlier units there was a bigger distinction between the journals and the portions that were read out loud and so we decided to bring that together through color coding and what that means is all of the font that's in black is what you read out loud and any font that's in a different color is which you can read silently to yourself that is for that particular age group that helps them to understand at their own level we also even made it better than what it was in our holiday units and we decided to bring all of the color coding either to the end of the paragraph or to the end of the lesson or the page so that way there's no interruption of flow so everybody's reading the black font out loud but then they still get that important information that is for their age group um without interrupting the flow any time when we have a word throughout the paragraph and a different font color it's usually just a either more scientific term or a definition of a hard word maybe for a younger student something like that point number three is that we are doing what is called core connections we had a lot of parents write in and ask us to give them ideas of ways that they can tie this into their core curriculum um this is especially beneficial for parents who do fund schooling and schooling or even regular homeschooling they just wanted ways to tie this into their regular core curriculum so we decided to go ahead and do that so for each lesson there's core connections to all of your core school subjects and ways that you can tie that in um an example uh for the high schoolers an essay idea instead of separating their courses and saying hey do signs over here and then math over here and then go to language arts and write an essay about something completely different we have an essay idea that we lead the high schoolers through of being a volcanologist having to submit a persuasive essay and a report to change building codes in an area and we lead them through that and so it actually brings it to life in the context of the unit that they are studying especially if they're passionate about becoming a volcanologist for geography um here's another example in one lesson we have you uh take your student and go on google maps and stand in the spot in younger was standing and then you can rotate the map until you can see the volcano in real life just like he did when it was erupting and so that brings geography and history to life um for those that are not passionate about it and it makes them understand wow this is important this is where italy is this is where it happened and it's not just reading in a book or drawing on a map it actually really brings it to life and so another example would be math uh you know sine and cosine and and what am i ever going to use this for if your child has ever asked you that and what's really neat about this is that volcanologists actually use jeffrey's equation which which uses sine and cosine and all that to determine viscosity and velocity and that's just one example we were actually going to teach the high schoolers that in the unit but it's really advanced trigonometry and so we couldn't quite convey the concept um so what we did was we actually used um slope intercept form and other equations that volcanologists use to figure things out through volcanology and so it allows your student once again to see that math is not just math and math is not just when am i ever going to use this it actually lets them see that they are working for something that they are perhaps passionate about and having fun with we also include art or does not just draw this it's actually a theme throughout and you know we decided that we're going to keep these in all of our future units moving forward and i'll tell you why my husband and i were talking and we thought you know if we had a child who wants to become a professional chef one day and he has the option to go job shadowing with a professional chef for a week and throughout that week he's going to be learning science of food and how things mix together and how certain temperatures affect things and and math through fractions and doubling and and he's going to be learning so many fascinating topics throughout that week or we could have him sit in a math class for two hours every day at for that week and and you know the answer is obvious we would have him do the job shadowing because he's getting all of those core subjects in and it's drawing him toward his passion and toward his dream that god has put inside of his heart and so we want to continue doing this for the parents who want it please keep in mind we are not a core curriculum we just wanted to include these ways to tie in the course subjects for those who want it um those who don't want to use it you know it's in the appendix so you can just ignore it but for those who want it and asked us for it it is there and we will be keeping it there in all future units this is also going to be especially helpful for all of our customers out there who have high schoolers who need extra things to do to to work up their hours to get a half credit or full credit so having said all that we are just going to go ahead and jump into the actual flip through now of the unit and i am going to try to make it really quick so that it's not quite as long as my other videos um we will touch on all of the different learning styles that we use through the unit uh all the incredible activities that we've got going on and you'll see a bit more of it there so let's jump in [Music] flip through we encourage you go to our website go ahead and get this unit for yourself for your children do it as a family you're going to love it and it is so much fun every lesson includes activities hands-on learning we incorporate so many fun ways to bring learning to life we use storytelling it's definitely definitely a different unit study than what you're probably used to um in in core curriculum so this is going to be a great one for the family and our contributor is actually a volcanologist which just makes it absolutely amazing so hope you guys enjoy it and have a blessed night
