the van Hecke show is brought to you by element 14 the electronic design community and online store built for engineers and hobbyists alike join now and browse the store at element14.com hello and welcome back to the Ben Heck show it's that time of year again Alison and I are going to be going to the Bay Area Maker Faire to film some things for the bed next show now when we're there we need to see in communication but ironically even though you're near Silicon Valley sometimes the technology doesn't work so great because there's so much of it so in today's episode before we head to the fair we're going to build a pair of texting radios dedicated devices that work on their own frequency so two people can stay in communication let's get started and then we'll head to the fair amazing builds exclusive mods cutting-edge ideas electronics engineering and more every week on element 14 the Ben Heck show here's my idea for accomplishing the texting radio we need a battery to power it a keyboard to type the message an LCD to see your message or read the message that you've received a microcontroller that will scan the keypad and also drive the LCD and send cereal to the Eric radio module and the radio modules will talk to each other so if this unit sends a message on the serial this guy will get it and put it on the screen and vice-versa we'll try to make these as small as we can the keyboards probably be the tricky part so a keyboard matrix microcontroller that's a lot of hand wiring that I don't want to do so it's time to make a PCB in a past episode you saw us come up with a bunch of different ways to make PCBs we're gonna use the laser paint method I'll design up a PCB in Adobe Illustrator actually with some assistance from Eagle so that we know it's mechanically correct with a bunch of buttons on it we will laser paint it out and then I will stuff parts on it [Music] okay now that the PCB is done let's take a closer look at how I lead it out all right this is a single sided PCB and I actually designed it in Reverse the screen plugs in here and then the tax switches are going to go here so all the components plug in on this side alright so we have our microcontroller here in the center and we're going to use a surface mount one the laser paint had sufficient detail to put use this part so that's good we have some pads here basically for the things I wasn't able to route in single sided so what doesn't jump those wires manually and some of them are just extra i/o I pinned out so this is where the Johnson counter goes will demonstrate that just a little bit but...
