hi i'm tech newman documentation manager at liquor in this video we'll look at creating and configuring a liquor project then we'll generate the initial model in view to start defining that data model and configure some settings on the project if your instance is new your first project is typically already set up for you during the trial and you don't need to watch this video along the way we'll show the relevant documentation links to learn more about each topic that we discuss so let's get started creating a new project in liquor choose develop and then manage look ml projects a project is a set of related models and other files that you'll use later to define your data model in this case we'll create a new project this must be done in development mode often called developer mode or simply dev mode so what is development mode your liquor data model exists in two states production mode and development mode development mode lets you make and test look ml changes without affecting business users in production mode the data model is shared across all users and the look ml files are treated as read-only when a project is pushed from dev mode to production business users can then use your new data modeling to create ad-hoc queries or to view and create save content such as looks and dashboards so we'll click on development mode and specify a new project this video assumes that you have already created your connection as discussed in an earlier video we're going to use that connection to automatically generate some data modeling we can auto generate data modeling for one or all of our tables we recommend only generating for the most important table when creating the project more is not better in this case it's best to consider inclusion of each table one by one afterwards you can generate modeling for any additional tables you want as shown in a later video we'll just start with our most important table the order items table and click create project we get a new project listed on the manage projects page and the project can now be seen in the develop menu clicking a project will open the editor the liquor IDE where we can see the files that were generated since we generated modeling for a table we now have a model file named after our project we also have a view file generated for our table and our model file specifies the connection allowed for our model so we've created a project and liquor has generated the initial data modeling for that project let's go back to the manage the Kamel projects one more time typically when a model is pushed from dev mode to production for the first time looker can automatically configure it or we can configure it by just choosing add configuration for that model on this page we can configure the project and the allowed connections for that model by the way if you're in a trial and watch this video anyway here are a few differences you'll probably see in your trial kickoff meeting typically a looker analyst sets up an instance for a trial before you've created the first connection since there is no connection yet they won't be able to select the generate models and views option on the new project page instead they create an empty project without any modeler view files then in the looker editor the looker analysts typically manually make some empty model file like this then in the trial kickoff meeting you and your looker analysts will decide what to add to that model file finally on the configure a model page the looker analyst will configure the project to accept all future connections that way when you create your first connection it will be usable by the new project this video showed how to create a project and configure it including mentioning the typical differences that exist for trials leader development videos will show how to set up version control for your project then you're off and running to develop your own modeling thanks for listening and have fun
