Mark witness
who is Mark and what is he witnessing [Music] hey guys my name is Dave Tim thank you very much for checking out this video today we are talking about a witness mark and what it is and why you want to have it on your rifle especially if you have a rifle that you are depending on for patrol use self defense competition whatever that is critical that fasteners are being held in place and they are supposed to be holding the things down that you want held down such as lights hand guards free flow trails maybe optic mounts sites you know whatever so we're going to talk about witness mark what it is and why it is important now in a couple of videos ago we talked about working with fasteners we used thread locking compound we talked about degreasing using the proper amount and type of thread locking compound as well as then torquing the fastener to a proper amount so we don't over tighten it and then in another episode we built this upper this you know it kind of surged esque but basically just an optimized upper receiver group for shooting suppressed and so far I'm really really digging it I've taken this to the range since that video and been very happy with the performance of this adjustable carrier which we'll have a full review in the future once I get you know a few thousand rounds through it make sure it's holding up but so far initial thoughts are pretty pretty good however one of the things that I did in the installation sequence that I didn't really highlight or talk about in the previous videos is witness marks so we're going to talk about what a witness mark is and basically as the name implies is a small mark as you can see here it is just made with a paint marker or you know some people I know use a nail polish or something like that but basically I just use a Sharpie paint marker and it's important to use the proper type of Sharpie the ones that I'm using here are an oil-based you want to make sure you're using the oil-based paint markers versus the water-based paint marker because the oil-based is resistant to water so before I knew any better I grabbed a water-based paint marker went out shot in the rain and of course the water-based paint as you can imagine got all messy so I like using the oil-based paint marker and I will just make a small mark on a fastener as shown here and what that does is it serves as a witness this is probably the better side to to check here but what it does is it serves as a witness to making sure that the fastener is still tight so you can see that this line starts on the fastener and extends on to the small bracket right there and I can quick glance at that and if you see that the lines are not in alignment I know that the fastener has loosened or shifted and I'm a firm believer in you know all critical fasteners so you can see here I have a fastener mark right here so that's indicating that this bolt when it was torqued and tightened I put a little line with the paint marker and then when I'm doing my function checks or an inspection or anything like that if I noticed that the lines are not lined up I know that that fastener has moved raising some attention to what I need to do you know why do I need to retighten it do I need to check things make sure that the sights still solid or whatever and then I have the same thing on the front sight mark so how I apply my witness marks is basically what I'll do is I'll take the paint marker and I'll just put a small line now I also witness mark my sights and back in the day and those that have been shooting with me knowing me for a long long time know that I am a firm believer of witness marks especially for pool or patrol guns that you have to share a gun with somebody so if you share a gun with somebody and you know that the rifle is now zeroed you know ie your iron sights or whatever it might be I'm a firm believer in putting a witness mark there to make sure that that zero not only zeros change okay so it is fluid and I'll talk about that in a second but to make sure that nobody bumped the knob or somebody was playing with it or whatever so here's how I make a witness mark I've zeroed this rifle with the iron sights so what now I'm ready to witness mark the sight so basically all I'm going to do is take my paint marker and I'd prefer green but you can use blue or white or you know they come in all sorts of different colors and all I'm gonna do is get this a little better view for you there you go I'm just gonna make a line right there and now at a quick glance I can look to make sure that the windage knob hasn't moved or it got bumped or whatever it might be if I'm doing a pre work shift check or whatever I can quickly look and make sure that the knob is where it should be exactly where I had it and same thing you know on the front sight I can make a quick mark now one instructor a big-name instructor way back in the day criticized me for witness marking my iron sights he said your your zero needs to change and you need to update it often with the seasons and I totally agree so whenever I go to the range and reserve my iron sights I either carry some denatured alcohol with me in a bottle and some patches like this or I carry those individual alcohol wipes that you find in first-aid kits or drugstores or whatever I just keep some of those in my range bag open that up I can take the alcohol wipe or the denatured alcohol I zeroed my backup iron sights wipe wipe off the existing mark re0 make any adjustments that I need to make and then boom I can remark it and it's just literally as simple as that but in my opinion a witness mark is a mark of a professional user because they want to at a quick glance look at their firearm and make sure that everything is tightened down as it should that is a witness mark what it is a lot of people ask what I use again it's just an oil-based Sharpie paint marker you can get these at any art supply store you can get them online but don't be afraid to use witness marks and then don't be afraid to carry alcohol wipes and change your witness marks if you change something wipe it off I hope this was helpful for you guys that you can understand what a witness mark is when you're at the range and you see these oil paint marks on people's rifles you know what they are what purpose they serve but it's something that I again I feel very strongly about but it's something I feel that any serious user should be doing to their rifle so hope you found this helpful please like share follow us on all of our social media platforms make
