hanging on to their whiteness the most you could probably make a pretty good guess it's the places where white people are still doing what white people do you know hunting fishing golfing and being white so grab your starbucks and stop playing fortnite for a few minutes as we look at america's widest states our first stop on the white tour of america starts in unsurprisingly south dakota here in south dakota the white population is 82 percent and 10 percent of the population in south dakota is native american since there's some pretty big native american reservations in the mount rushmore state speaking of which this is home to mount rushmore which has a giant monument featuring four big white guys if you're a white ice fisherman named ned who drives this snowmobile to work every day you likely live here in south dakota oh i've got friends in low places where the whiskey drowns and the beer chases everyone knows that cowboys are mostly white so it's no surprise that the cowboy state is our ninth widest estate is it cowboys are a total white thing they love roping riding and mutton busting for all those who are not aware of what mutton busting is it's when a kid tries to that depending on where in vermont you live it's possible that you haven't seen a person of color in a couple months some vermont kids are in grade school before they ever see someone of color vermonters are very outdoorsy types camping hiking and skiing are all very popular white things to do people here are also very liberal and progressive they support charities care about the environment and they're involved in their communities boy scouts and girl scouts are still a big deal in these parts so is yoga and just like their friends in new hampshire just about everyone here drives a subaru or some other four-wheel suv type vehicle if you're a person of color in new hampshire you're very lonely you've got the white stuff baby you're the reason why i sing this song the white stuff new kids on the block a very white band from the 80s folks some say the best boy band of all time welcome to maine the widest state in america here 97 of the population is some shade of white and for a majority of the year the ground is also covered in white too why is mean so white for the most part an ethnic person who wants to come to me with a family of four or five is not going to be able to find a home they can afford and there's almost no rental housing anywhere in maine and according to research the white folks in the great north don't really see racial diversity as a problem like people in the southern states do so maine just might like being white here in america there's a pattern of migration that determines where people move in many of the places we just talked about traditionally there were no jobs there wasn't a lot of heritage or culture to attract people of color to come to those states to settle it'll be interesting over time to see if those migration patterns change well all people of color continue to migrate to and settle in urban areas who knows one day if whitest states is a category on jeopardy one day these stats will change but for now all the white people in maine new hampshire vermont and all the other states we talked about will continue to do their white things in their little white bubble worlds and i'll probably get hurt doing it
