hello everybody and welcome to our next video today we're going to show you what are the definitions of the seer variables and what is the best way to know their definition and their description so first of all we'll jump into the practical aspect of it you would go to the seer websites and specifically to that link I'm highlighting the link now and I'm going to put it below the video if you want to go directly to it and when you go to this link it will lead you to the most recent November 2016 submission of the seer database under that link there is a short title called a dictionary of the seer stat variables under this title you will find two links either which will give you the exact definition of the seer data this is the Excel version and this is the PDF version we're going now to download the Excel version after we have downloaded you can open it directly and here it is it will open on the Excel program of your computer of course it's 100 so I'm going to minimize it a little bit maybe something's wrong with my excel file so I'm going to download the PDF version and this is the PDF version of it also it's it's even more more obvious and it's even more clear you can use this document and you should use this document to get the basic definitions of the seer variables so if we look at this document you'll see that the title here is the dictionary of the seer stand very walls November 2016 submission released in April 2017 and this is the field number in which they are telling you the number of the variables of course this is variable number one which is the age recode was less than one year olds and if we scroll this document down to the end we will find that it contains a lot it will contain about one hundred and ninety three variables so the last one of them is the marital status at diagnosis this is oldest column on the left side is the number of the variable and if we scroll up again some other variables after you know their definition they need to be more clarified like the race record for example so if you hover over the race recode and then go to the description of it and then they're going to tell you that this race recode is based on the race variables and the American Indian Native American blah blah blah this recode should be used to link to the populations for white black and other it is independent of Hispanic ethnicity so they're now telling us that we don't provide information on whether those races that were included with this variable are of Hispanic ethnicity we don't know about that and the most important thing in this example is that they are telling you for more information see and then giving you a certain link so this link if I wanted to open it in a new field so I'm going to right click it and open the link in a new tab and then I'll go to the tab the time ordered it and this is the information about the variables that I've just clicked so the race recode changes and they are linking it to a certain time line like for for the 1973 to 2005 CEO research data so these are the available raise variables so the race recode white/black and others race recode white black American Indian or Asian or Pacific Islander and otherwise so this is one example in which we can use the dictionary to jump into another webpage in which we get more description and more levels of the given variable we'll go back now to the dictionary and then we will hover down in order to get some idea about further variables of course we're not going to cover all the variables that are present in the dictionary because there are 193 variables we're going to highlight some of the variables just for simplicity so that you can exercise this at home after we finish the video so if we're going to choose something that is more get you the second most important document you should have in dealing with the seer data so this is what is called seer research data record description for the case is diagnosed from 1973 to 2014 which is the most which is the latest version of the seer database that was released if we hover down if we hover down to the to the great session so so these are these are all the variables which is present in this in this document and for simplicity we can hover down the variables until we reach the grade variable so here it is the great variable and it's page 21 this document has the advantage of jumping into the required page with a click so if I clicked on this like that the variable itself or the page it will jump into the required page so this is the grades and they're giving you certain official information like it's in a cc our item number 440 the Sears Tech name is great the item length is 1 so this is the field description you should read that and the most important thing about it is when they talked about the description so they they are coding this in this year data as from 1 to 9 and every code of this variable or every level of this variable refers to a certain type or a certain level of the data so if they are saying that within the grade the grade is one so it's a great one maybe called the green eye or grade one and in a different number setting so it means well-differentiated or different she just well differentiated or differentiated or not otherwise specified if you find the number two and as a code so it's a great - it's moderately differentiated moderately differentiated or intermediate differentiation and so on with every code there's a description for it so after we have reached this yes this is the laterality so the laterality so they're just giving you a single link with a description file so they are saying that you see this link for the description and so I'm going to right click it and open it in a different link and I'm going to hover down this research data this research data records and I'm going to look for that out here is the laterality I'm going to click on it and they're going to give you a file description and then they will go into the code so these are the codes that are given if this variable is to be coded and the code if they're coming in to zero so it's not a paired site if they are coding it is one so this is right origin of primary so if it's to its left origin of primary and three it's only one side involved right or left origin unspecified so it's you can say that it's unspecified for is bilateral five is paired is a paired site but this is a midline tumor so five is if it's if it's five it's a paired side but a midline tumor and nine is a paired side but there is no information concerning laterality so sometimes they refer to it is amid like tumor so after we have discussed the great and that's reality we we now need to do a little experiment in order to tell you how to apply what you have known so far on the seer stat software so I'm going to minimize this window and I'm going to open the seer stand software so I'm waiting for it to open for simplicity I'm going to open the case listing session we're going to ask for my passwords and I've given a password so that are preparing the data ok we will choose the the most recent database the most recent registry and then I'm going to go to the selection tab and then I'm going to click Edit and go to the site and morphology the site tree code and when I click on the site recode the operator will tell me that I want the tumor is equals to so this means that the operator I want him to to choose this tumor that I'm going to click so I mean I I'm choosing one of the values that is listed down so I'm going to choose a parent tumor or appear to organ so I'm going to choose maybe I want to choose the breast okay so I decide recode and the operator is equals to and I've chosen the breast so it's automatically in the selection statement it states that the site and morphology site recode International classification diseases of oncology third edition is equal to breast if I get this just click on OK and this will appear in the selection statement after that after I've chosen the tumor then I'm going to the table tab to choose the variables and as you see here these are the available variables in the seer stat software so it's not only limited to those that are parent you if you scroll down there are more variables and every variable has its definition and has its levels or has its descriptions for the sake of simplicity who are going to stick to what we have looked in the dictionary and in the search data records so first of all I'd like to start by the patient ID the patient ID we'll get it from the other category so this is the patient ID I clicked on it and I will classify it as a colon so immediately after I click that it will appear in the colon section I'm gonna close this now and I'm gonna go to the site and morphology tab I'm gonna scroll down until I get the great so this is the great and then I'm gonna click : so it will appear next to the patient ID in the Colin section and then this is the laterality year I'm going to stay that I want it as a column and it's going to be immediately put in the column section here after that what is left for me is to choose the output or to name the output or the matrix that will be created so in the output section I'll just put like breast [Music] greed laterality laterality okay and after we finish this we will go to the execute button so we'll click on it and the seer data will prepare the outcome for me in the form of a a seer data matrix so as we see here the total records came up so I have like 1 million two hundred and eighty four thousand six hundred and twenty patients with breast cancer in the seer database so they're not preparing the output we're gonna wait a few more seconds yes yes we're waiting we are waiting it's a lot it's it's it's a big number when it reaches the end yes so this is the matrix that we're looking for so of course these are the number of patients or if you scroll down it will reach the 1 million 200 284 something patients that we have reached and what what I'm going to show you here what is important for you to show us that the variables which we have chosen as Colin's appear as columns so the patient ID is a separate column the great is a separate column and the laterality is a separate column and there is nothing that will show in these columns that are different from the values that we have gotten here so these are the laterality so you if you want remember the things that come in the description so maybe right or the primary left orphan primary not a parasite only those that will appear in the column so I if I go back so the laterality year left original primary left origin or primary if we scroll down maybe you will get something different but it will be at the same as those variables you will not get something out of it and if we if we got something out of it we will find some definitions word in the dictionary or we will find a certain description for it and in the other document and if we go to the great : so we get also similar results so it's it's unknown some of the patients have moderately differentiated great to
