Signature id card template for parents
hi everybody Benny here from Butte College financial aid back with another FAFSA tutorial and today we're gonna be focusing on all you students out there who have undocumented parents meaning that they don't have a social security number so I'm gonna show you step by step just how to complete that application and submit it so some things that we're gonna need today are your 2018 IRS tax returns or your w-2s if you didn't file or both if you did and the same goes for your parents all right so stick with me and let's get started alright so the first thing we're gonna do is open our browser and I've got Chrome up here for you and we're gonna go to student aid govt all right and the first thing that we're gonna want to do is create our FSA ID now if you already have that that's great you can go ahead and skip this step however if you don't have one yet then we're gonna go and click on this create a count button here at the top right and once we do that we're gonna go through about six easy steps registering your account we're gonna put in some personal information like your name date of birth social security number address things like that alright so once that's done and we've got it completed we're gonna go back to studentaid.gov and Gobert where it says apply for aid and we're gonna click on complete the FAFSA form alright and then we're going to be logging in here now typically as parents are going to be making their own FSA ID account as well so they can sign your FAFSA but because your parents are undocumented they don't have a social security number we're gonna have them we're actually gonna have you print out the application at the end and we're gonna mail it in alright so they don't have to register for an FSA ID but we're gonna go ahead and go to I am the student here because we're gonna log in and then we're gonna try and click on everything with the mouse as far as like the buttons go for some reason they're there website doesn't like it when they hit the enter button and it can error out the website so just click on everything so this is just a disclaimer warning that you're not going to use this for personal gain or illegal activity or anything like that so we'll go in and accept all right and then the one we're going to be looking for is the 2021 application and we just started right here alright so now I want to create a saved key something that's easy to remember like a four or five digit number usually I try and tell my students to use like the last four your social security number your telephone number zip code something like that but I'm just gonna use one two three four okay so this is just some tutorial information here you can read this at your leisure if you like but for my sick I'm just gonna go in hit next alright so as we go down through each one of these screens I just want you to verify that all this information is accurate because in the very beginning they're gonna import a suti FSA is gonna import all of your personal information that you created from your account but for some reason it leaves out the middle initial so if you do have a middle initial and you don't see it in this field go ahead and add it and just verify all this is correct yep and then hit next alright then we're gonna just make sure email address is correct now make sure you use your personal email address if you use the one from like your student account like Butte College and you want to create a FAFSA later on for another college and you don't use your old email anymore there's a little bit of a conflict there so just make sure you use your updated email address and then also include your telephone number all right then we're going to verify that our mailing address is correct sometimes you may not update your your address with FSA for several years and you've moved many times so just like I said as you go down through here just make sure all this is accurate all right now it's just asking us who lived in our state for at least five years just answered accordingly and then re US citizen yes or no all right so what were your high school completion status be when you be in the 2021 school year now remember that a school year starts in fall and ends in spring that's what we call an academic year so when you start the fall semester of 2020 what's your high school completion status high school diploma GED homeschooled or something else and then what college degree or certificate will be working on when you begin the 2021 school year now Butte College only offers associate degrees and certificates so if you're viewing this tutorial from another college you might be going towards a bachelor's degree PhD math or something like that so just answer it accordingly we have your first bachelor's degree before you begin 21 in school year not me what we were College real it'll be when you be in the 2121 school year will say first year are you interested in being considered for work-study so work-study is a great program I would refer to your job placement office for some more in-depth information in that but it's just a way for you to work on campus and earn an income so definitely want to do that if possible I like working on campus are you male or female alright most male citizens and male immigrants must register with the Selective Service System to receive federal student aid so find out if you are registered or not you can hit this question mark button right here and I'll give you some more information on that you can also go to SSS govt and just fill out some personal record information and that will let you know if you're registered or not and then that will help you to come back and answer this question driver's license number if you have one it's ok if you don't have a driver's license you don't have to enter that in but if you do try and put it in and then are you a foster youth or you at any time in the foster care system some of these questions like this can be a little bit tricky some people don't know a lot about their past especially if they were in a foster care system come the technicalities of it so you can always hit this question mark button right here and it'll give you a little bit more in-depth information but I would definitely just refer to your parents or guardians for that and then high school completion status for parent one or two now you can have either either parent for this it doesn't matter which one and we're just going to select whatever their highest education level is and if you only have one parent then you just enter one field all right what is the name of your high school so here we can be kind of generic in a way and we can actually search for this high school that we attended so let's just try it she go high school and then the city is Chico California and then once you've gotten in from we just hit our search button and it'll bring up a list of whatever it believes might be similar to what we typed in and we've got the woman right here and she quiet so we're gonna hit select and then it populated those fields for us and we just hit next all right so now it's asking us for a federal school code this can help get us directly to the college that we want to submit our application to we don't we do know the the school code for Butte College so we can type that in which is zero zero six nine seven two if you have another college that you're using this application for then you would hit no and then just search for them manually and select them from the list all right and then once we see Butte Community College just make sure once you enter in that data that you double check that the name is accurate and then we're gonna check this box and hit next now Butte College doesn't have any on-campus housing so the housing plan from this selection list it says on-campus at what parent or off parent so it's a your choice is either going to be with parent or off-campus which means that you live away from your parents all right now this is asking some more student information from you for what is your marital status this person's gonna be single but just answer it accordingly all right and then do you now have or will you have children who receive more than half of their support from you between July 1st 2020 and June 30th 2021 so if you have a children that you take care of between those dates and you support them let's say more than 51% of the time then you would answer yes to that if you don't have any children it would just be no or if perhaps your spouse or someone else takes care of those children and then dependents do you have dependents other than your children or spouse who live with you and receive more than half of their support from you and now through June 30th 2021 so that could be like mom dad grandpa grandma and uncle some cousins somebody like that that you take care of and you support with your income all right and then these questions here some of these can be a little bit technical you know are you serving in the US Armed Forces are you an active duty or you ever in foster care or dependent where the court so just read through these here very carefully and if you have trouble answering any of these there's also the question mark button here that can help answer that or get a parent or guardian to help you answer them all right on or after July 1st 2019 were you homeless or were you self-supporting and at risk of being homeless this can also be another one of those tricky questions I I always try to get people to just to click on this question mark here because it kind of goes a little more in-depth into that question and there's so much criteria when it comes to this that it would just kind of get us off track on this video so just try to answer that the best you can all right so based on the information that we entered in an application so far it considers us a dependent student and that just means that we're dependent on our parents or guardians to take care of us financially so it asks us enough ask us if we want to provide information about our parents or if we're not able to provide information about our parents that's fine too but only if you absolutely can't and then we would go through another process to kind of establish maybe your independence provide some like proof some reasons why that you're unable to provide that information so but if you do have that great we're just gonna go to select that and hit next all right so now it's asking for parent information here so one thing to definitely notice is this blue ribbon here kind of at the top this I want you to really pay attention to because it's going to shift from student to parent and a lot of times I see students get their parent and the and their information switched around as far as income goes and that can cause a huge problem with your eligibility because it meant it might make it look like you make just as much money as your parents and that's gonna hurt your eligibility big-time so just make sure you pay attention to that when we're putting in our information so as of today what is the meril status of your parents so the choices here are married unmarried and both legal parents living together married or remarried divorce separated or widowed so just do your best to answer accordingly I'm just gonna say my parents were never married and I'm just gonna enter in let's say mom's information so you just answered this the best that you can you can also go you know if it's married then they're gonna ask what your parents married date is so just go ahead make sure to answer that best you can all right so now it's asking for Mother's social security number this is where this video is specifically for you folks out there have undocumented parents because they don't have a social security number which is fine so the way to get around that is we're just going to put in all zeros zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero zero and then from there we're just going to go ahead and enter in their information as best we can so mom's last name and date of birth and then their email address so I do hear from a lot of students that they your parents use the same email address that you do you guys that you all share I can see how that would be kind of convenient but it might be in their best interest is to create their own email address for this application purpose that way they can get a copy in their own email and access it when they need to all right now has your parent lived in this their state for at least five years just go ahead answer that best you can now hopefully your parent is sitting here with you helping you through this application because later on in the financial section they're going to have to put in their tax information so if they're not with you right now you might want to pause this application and grab them and come back so for household size they just want to know how many people are in the household and that can be kind of confusing because you might think well I live by myself it's just me here my mom and you know my parents they live in another state or another city they don't support me at all however if you don't meet the criteria for independence and they still consider you a dependent student we have to assume that you and your parents are one household and that includes any siblings that you have as well so when you answer this it's just going to be think of it your family as a whole parents you and any siblings and then any dependents that your parents might have living with them that they take care of so for this case mom's gonna be one myself is also one and then also your mother's other children even if they do not live with your mother so let's say I have a brother and a sister so I'm gonna put two there and then this could be this section here is for let's say grandpa grandma aunt uncle cousin somebody that your mom takes care of or your or you know your parents take care of it's not your brother or sister so we go tandem enter them there and then this is just a total of all of our answers here and then one oh how many of those people are in college so it's just me all right for 2018 has your mother completed her income tax return or another tax return for you those of you who have married parents it would just say your parents and then it's okay if they didn't file those taxes perhaps that they didn't make enough money for the year to be able to file taxes in 2018 that's alright just make sure through the hat you have their w2 with you so we can enter their income information all right what type of income tax return did your parents file for 2018 so just refer back to that tax return in the top left corner it will tell you what kind what type of return and then in the middle of the year so number one 2018 all right for 2018 what determines text blank status according to our tax return since I selected that just have one single parent then it would possibly be singular head of household and then we want to try and use the tato retrieval tool when we do our application because that's going to pull our parents and also our tax information directly from IRS is gonna save us a ton of time however if you print or you did not file a tax return or maybe you don't have the information to be able to access that that's alright we're just going to refer to the hard copy documents that you have to enter in the information but really try to use the IRS direct retrieval tool whenever you can plus if you have any discrepancies later on maybe if you get slag for online verification and the government wants some more information to what you put on your application having that directly come from IRS can save you much time and also some stress - all right what was your mother's just - gross income for 2018 that amount was found on the IRS Form 1040 at line 7 and that's going to be on here line 7 is going to be on the second page of the 2018 1040 and it's right here so whatever you've got in this box here that's what we're gonna go ahead and add to this box here so I remember this is parent information so let's just say 32,000 467 and hit next now how much did your mother earn or parents from working wages salaries tips etc in 2018 this amount is a total of IRS form line 1040 excuse me form 1040 at line one and the schedule 1 lines 1218 and box 14 code a of IRS schedule k-1 a lot of this can kind of get how overwhelming confusing just know that if you are using that giant stack of IRS documents that you print scott from IRS if there is no k1 along with it then or a Schedule one they probably don't have them anyway but I would definitely ask and find out but if not then we're just gonna refer to IRS 1040 line one that's gonna be right here we're just gonna say okay and next all right so you indicated that your mother filed an IRS 1040 did she file a Schedule one select no if your mother did not file a Schedule one or only filed it to report an Alaskan Permanent Fund dividend another kind of a complication there too so if you don't understand what that is your parents don't understand what it is you don't find the schedule k-1 then it's ever gonna be know or don't know whatever you want to select all right enter the amount of your mother's income tax in 2018 this is the total amount of IRS Form 1040 line 13 - schedule - line 46 so when we go back and we look through our documentation if you don't even have a schedule - or line 46 anywhere then we're not gonna worry about that we're just gonna focus on the line 13 from the second page here which is located right there how some people might not have any income tax that they paid if you see a zero that's okay I don't worry about it just enter it in as you see it and then this section here most of this is going to be about combat pay or student grants and scholarships that reported education credits IRA distributions like you know investment accounts and then any taxes have extra interest it was gained some of these have specific lines or schedules that you can look into to help you fill those out so as you go through these just look and see if you have that information if you don't that's okay just leave it at zero and move on and then for this section here member we saw on parent information did your child support your mother paid because and this could be for parents depending on how you selected your parent situation child support your parents paid because of divorce or separation or as a result of a legal requirement do not include support for children in your mother's household so this just referred to whichever parent that you live with or both parents or in what every situation is to help you answer that and then as far as these questions here if you don't even know what some of these programs are likely they're just going to be 0 but do your best to try and reference that all right and then this also in firm is just more child support information entering any housing food or living expenses that you paid to members of the military the clergy tax deferred pensions or retirement savings retirement accounts some of those will be listed on your w-2 forms for your parents so you can reference those right there and then any veterans non education benefits disability death pensions depends a lot of other technical information and then at the bottom here this one's kind of important because it says other untaxed income not reported such as workers compensation disability benefits etc I really highly recommend that if your parents didn't file their taxes or they don't have any w-2 because it looks like they didn't earn the income it may be because they were on a specialized program that didn't have that kind of thing and so you can always hit this question mark button here and it will let you know what kind of income that you don't include on this all right okay now do you want to get questions about your mother's assets now they give you the option to select yes or no if you do or do not want to answer that but it's possible that later on and like say an online verification if you're selected they're gonna ask for this information anyway so it's only gonna help you to answer this anyway so if your parent is there and they feel comfortable answer these questions go ahead and do that so the first one is gonna be here as of today what is your mother's father's our parents total current balance of the cash savings and checking accounts let's just say 4,500 as it a what is the net worth of your parents investments including a real estate not in their home so that means if your parents have like a secondary or even a third home that they use as an income rental property they want to know the net worth of that property but if you just have one you live there or your parents just have one and they live there then we're not going to worry about that now would just be zero as of today what is the net worth of your parents current businesses and or investment farms be sure to note here do not include a family farm or family business with 100 or fewer full-time or full-time equivalent employees so that means if they have like a giant packaging factory or something they have 150 employees the government wants to know what the net worth of that business is however if they own like a you know a hotdog stand or like a just a small and a flower shop and they have ten employees they don't care to know that it's that big and it's if it's a family business make sure to reference that all right so for 2018 now we're going in we're shifting into Student Information by the way so just make sure we reference that there student information for 2018 have you completed your IRS income tax return or another tax return we're just gonna say I'm not gonna file for this one just for you know to change it up a little bit if you did make sure that you go ahead and do that and try to use the IRS direct direct retrieval tool that way we can import our information directly from IRS instead of having to reference our taxes all right so how much did you earn from working wages in 2018 let's say because I didn't file I I only made let's say six thousand to four hundred and twenty eight dollars all right so because we didn't file or at least for the demonstration demonstration of this application I didn't file I didn't have to enter in all the tax information and account information from my return because I didn't have one if you did have one just make sure you go through those steps accordingly and now it's asking any child support that you paid because of a divorce or separation or as of legal requirement now since you're considered a dependent dependent student on this application it's likely that you didn't pay any child support or receive any because you don't have any children but just make sure and reference that as best you can and then any cooperative education program earnings or taxable earnings from need-based employment program so just take a look at those and answer the best you can all right this is also for 2018 any child support that you receive for a children that you might have do not include foster care or adoption payments housing food other living allowances pay to members of the military clergy these are gonna be the same questions that your parents got so a lot of this you can reference on your w-2s or your taxes just pay attention to those a lot of this stuff is for you know veterans and foster care children child child support and then any one of the receipt on your behalf from somewhere else it's not reported on this form so this last question here make sure you pay attention to that one all right and then it's asking I do you want to get questions about your assets same question as your parents try not to skip it if you can try to enter it the best you can if you feel comfortable doing that so let's just say two hundred and sixteen dollars in my account I don't have a business and or real estate investment properties alright so it's asking us if we're a preparer and I prepare is someone who can help you do your application for you now it's extremely rare that happens because there are a lot of places that try and get a student to pay for their application or pay for the help please don't ever pay to have someone help you with this application it's free from the federal government if an agency is trying to charge you to do it for you you need to eat cut it away get out of there and stay away from them because that's what these tutorials are for that's what your financial aid office is for you just go in and talk to them and someone will come out and gladly help you complete this application 100% for free all right so no we're not a preparer alright so as you go down through this section here this is a summary of all of your answers I want you to take you know a good five six minutes something like that to just go down through everything and make sure all this information is accurate one of the really important sections I want you to pay attention to is under school selection for first college or second college or third or whatever you may have just make sure that you have if you are attending Butte College make sure you have Butte Community College selected and then what your housing plans are make sure that's accurate okay because if it the application never gets to the college they're not gonna be able to determine your eligibility because they're not gonna have your application so pay attention all that make sure all this is accurate here this all looks good and then we're not gonna worry about this section down here at the bottom were talks about the preparer social security number because we're not a preparing we don't have one you can print this for your records if you like just note you can always log back into this application and print this out all right so here first off we're gonna select student signature needed so we're going to go and click on provide student signature now we already have an FSA ID because we created one so we're gonna hit agree on this section here and next and we're gonna sign it make sure that your social queue number everything is accurate now for parents we're gonna do this a little bit differently than we normally would it's not gonna be submitted electronically we're gonna actually print this confirmation page out and we're gonna mail it in so if we hit provide parents signature we're gonna hit agree and next it's giving us two options here we can either print a signature page or submit without signatures because our parents don't have an FSA ID or a social security number to be able to submit it to the federal government that way so I definitely suggest that you hit print a signature page and not just submit without signatures because your application will never be completed without that so go ahead print signature page and hit next and then we're gonna select print signature page from right here maybe we have to click this and actually print it out before it will let us submit the electronic version so once we select it here it's gonna bring us up to the actual confirmation page this is what it looks like here and then reference at the bottom so this is where your parent is going to and then oops and then they're gonna date it right here and at the bottom this is actually where it's going to get mailed to so make sure on your outgoing section of your envelope this is where it's gonna get sent and it takes about five to seven business days roughly for your application to go through and your college to get it before they can help determine eligibility typically with electronic it's about three to five but with mail that add a few days so we're gonna hit print and signature page here make sure you print it to whatever source that you have and then we're gonna close that and then once you hit that print button and then you close if you don't see this Submit my FAFSA Now button it's because you never actually printed it some people might think well I printed it I it's got a must have gone somewhere or printed a PDF something like that you have to make sure that you see this Submit my FAFSA Now button in order to submit the electronic version so hopefully now you have a paper copy of the confirmation page and a Submit my FAFSA now button to click on so once we click that congratulations you your FAFSA was successfully submitted to federal student aid so your electronic application got sent to FSA and now you have a confirmation page in your hands and just get signed by your parents and then mailed off to them so once they receive that then they can put them put the two together your electronic application and your confirmation page and they're gonna send that off to whatever college that you have on file and they'll help determine your eligibility so one thing to note here is your EFC which is your expected Family Contribution this is a number that helps determine what kind of a that you can get and how much you were eligible to receive so reference you our financial aid office to get some more information on that sometimes it can be a little bit complicated and it's a little bit too much for me to go into detail in this video okay so thanks everybody for watching as always hit that subscribe button if you want to see more videos like this one if you enjoyed it and it was helpful to you you can contact our office directly if you have any questions at five-30 eight nine five two five one one or email financial aid financial aid at Butte edu thanks for watching everybody see you next time
