[Music] welcome to the next episode of the dark web deacon before we begin be sure to smash that subscribe button click the bell to turn on notifications new videos are published every monday and thursday and as always be sure to like and provide comments in this episode we're going to look at some of the easy steps to take to replace your social security card if it's lost any additional steps to take if it's ever stolen you're going to place your card for free by either logging on to the social security administration website and submitting the online forms or by printing out the online application and bringing that application into the local social security office along with the required documents remember you can request a social security card online if you are a us citizen age 18 and older and have a valid us mailing address you are limited to three replacement cards in a year and 10 during your lifetime there are some exceptions to this rule for example if you have a legal name change this does not count toward the limit neither just changes to immigration status that require updates the documents needed for the application is fairly straightforward the paperwork needed is based on proving your citizenship proving your age and proving your identity now remember no photocopies are allowed and all documents must be originals and they all must have valid dates so nothing that's expired for citizenship you must show proof of your view as citizenship via a us birth certificate or a u.s passport for your age you must show proof of your age again with a u.s birth certificate hospitalization birth record a u.s passport or a religious record made before the age of five showing your date of birth for your identity you must prove your identity showing a us driver's license a state issued id card a u.s passport or an employment id card school id card or military card the question often comes up can i replace my social security number and card on the same day the answer is no the fastest way to replace your social security card is to request a new one online you can also visit a local social security office in your area but according to the ssa website it typically takes 10 to 14 days to receive your new card once your application has been processed now what if your social security card was stolen if you're replacing your social security card because it has been stolen there are several additional steps you should take to reduce your risk of identity theft first alert the authorities you should contact local law enforcement to file a crime report you will need this later to ensure you're never liable for future fraud accorded to your identity number two add a fraud alert or freeze your credit file with all three major credit bureaus being experian equifax and transunion now a dna fraud alert to your credit file lets creditors know you've been a victim of fraud or you were you may be the victim in the future a fraud alert instructs creditors to take extra steps to verify your identity before granting any new credit in your name placing a fraud alert with any one of the three major bureaus experian transunion or echo flax will automatically alert the other two to do the same so you only need to contact one of them if you want to go beyond just a fraud alert which is effective but not fool proof you can freeze your credit file which will prevent anyone from accessing your credit while the freeze is in place credit freezes must be turned on and off at each of the credit bureaus individually check out my previous video on freezing your child's credit file in four easy steps the steps in this video will also apply to adults as well and finally number three check your credit it's important to monitor your credit carefully after your social security card is stolen to see what happened in the days and weeks after the card was initially stolen you want to continue to monitor it for at least 12 to 18 months if you don't end up freezing it if an identity thief uses it to take out a credit card or loan in your name it will appear on your credit file so you want to be alerted if this ever does happen thanks for watching and as always please like subscribe and provide comments and turn on notifications by clicking the bell in order to check out future videos published twice a week
