Print various cc number

hi I'm Sarah Worf and back in 2004 I invented a way to convert an old credit card machine or a knuckle Buster into a printing press that looks like this it's very easy to do all you need are some common household tools and you'll be ready to start printing in this video I'm going to show you how to print with it and how to convert one the one place that I found that it's still possible to find these is on Etsy and so that's what I would recommend you might be able to find them in thrift stores but that's getting harder and harder one of the things you should look at for is machines that have this type of housing to them there's a bunch of different makes and they can all have a different sort of top this is made by datacard also you want to check that it still has the rubber feet on the bottom that makes it a whole lot easier to use when you're printing but that's not a huge thing because you can always put a non-slip pad underneath the way these guys used to work is that you'd hand the vendor or your credit card they put it here they'd have an embossed vendor plate that would be right here sometimes when you buy a machine it's still on there then they take this packet of paper and carbon paper and put it in there and then they'd run your card through and separate it and give you a receipt these are pretty easy to find there are limitations on size however what's really great is if you could find one notice this has a different sort of bed set up you can find the older ones that have screws on the top here those are really great to take apart and reassemble because you're not dealing with like on this one this just has little plastic clips that hold it together not a huge deal but if you do see one like this it's definitely worth getting once we've converted them you're going to end up with something that looks like this which is all ready to print I have put on the bed here a piece of paper that the same size as the paper I'm going to print on it's just a really simple registration thing then I've put a piece of mat board here and that's gonna work as a stop so that I can put my block here and that it's not gonna move on me when I go to print actually I'm gonna turn this one around okay so this really works great for printing unmounted linoleum not a big block like this cuz you only got about 3/8 of an inch in there in terms of clearance also this material called hips high impact polystyrene which you can engrave can be printed in relief or intaglio and polygraphs which are printing plates made with gel medium and papers and things like that those will also print really great in here so this is our unmounted Leno the fun thing about unmounted Leno of course is that it's so easy to cut into any size you want so I've actually made little pards for business cards and other stuff this would be perfect to add an image to something that you've typed or stamped that kind of thing so how this works is here's another one of my Leno's and I've already inked it up I'm just printing on plain index paper for these and that's what I used to have my students print on unlined index cards so easy so cheap they weren't great but you can of course print on good printmaking paper this is Stonehenge I believe something like Reeves Reeves lightweight you can also print on washi of course they're Japanese papers so there's flexibility there you are constrained by the size this card is I believe 3 by 5 that's pretty good you can go a little wider than that you can't go much longer because there has to be room for this housing to go to the other end so this is actually what I call my Cadillac because it's just about an inch longer than some other ones that I have so I can actually print a little bit longer than this and it isn't a big deal I have done bigger prints using washi where I've just folded and unfolded the paper and that actually works really great and it's something fun you might want to try so I've put my block down there I'm gonna put my print paper so good when you're printing relief it's a good idea to kind of tap that so the ink will hold the paper there and now I need stuff for packing so we've raised the rollers inside to give us this gap that's big enough to print but now we need to fill that gap so we get good pressure to get a good print so I'm using a combination of this is an old pendaflex folder this is an old piece of blotter or printmaking paper and then this is also another old like pendaflex folder and I found these actually at our office recycling place on campus at Hsu you're gonna carefully put that in there so you're not moving your printmaking paper and I move this up a little bit hold this other end and I'm also holding down my packing and just run it across like that and you've got this wonderful little print and you can just have a grand old time and print a whole lot notice with this one when I've converted it I've also put this is a piece of mylar so that I could remove this and clean this and then set it up with a different sort of registration you can see this registration is for a block this size on there okay so the next thing I'm going to show you is how do you convert one of these and how do you make one of these for yourself okay so we're ready to convert our credit card machine into a printing press the things you're going to need are two screwdrivers a regular one and a Phillips you're also going to need a pair of pliers with a cutter in there or just a pair of scissors you don't love to cut the wire you're going to need some picture framing wire to pieces about six inches long is all you need and and if you have a card machine like this it's helpful to have a putty knife or something to help take off the top if you bought one that has the screws of course you're just going to use the screwdriver alright so the first step is that you want to take the end off here which I've already done there's two screws just take it off really important that you systematically put everything on the table so that you're able to put this all back together after we're finished converting this next step as I would take off this housing this is just held on with these two plastic clips so using something like a putty knife or a paint knife helps quite a bit so we've got the end off we've got this off now we're gonna roll the housing off of here so I'd recommend turning it upside down and then slowly pulling it off being a little careful because these wheels tend to want to fall off all over the place there you go okay to clean this off a machine that looks like this with these you would just like pull them off and then using like a nail or an awl I would just push those through and get them off of there so you'd have a nice flat press bed okay so I would take the wheels off maybe take a photograph or pay attention to which way the wheels are on there you know are they this way are they this way usually doesn't make much difference but sometimes it does also notice that the wheels and then there's usually washers like this one they're usually pretty gunked-up and oily so I just wipe them down with a rag then when I put this back together I would put either vaseline or if you have bearing grease something like that I would put those on there okay the next thing is I'm going to take this off this too just has these plastic clips so I want to be careful that I'm not snapping those off so I just sort of pull it a little wider and then it comes off notice on the back of this housing there's these four sets of screws there's a Philips screw and then there's a smaller one that's a regular screw these relate to in here these larger screws hold this whole housing to this metal casing the smaller ones are the ones that adjust how high these shafts are from the base so we're gonna use both of those notice this is what it looks like when you take it off you've got two shafts and two rollers on them and they're usually like this like not in the same place what we're gonna do is we're gonna change it so that we've got both rollers on one shaft and then we're gonna save the other one just in case this one gets broken at some point I have had the shafts get broken from students really being hard on the machines a one-person user it's unlikely to happen all right so these are just held on by these little clips so just unclip them take them off save the little spring clips you're gonna need those later and then you can see we've got two hard plastic rollers cylinders and then we've got two shafts here the one that I usually use first is this one the one that usually has a smaller tip to it although it really doesn't matter but this one gives you more room for the converting but this one I'm going to be saving and putting back as my extra one when you look at your rollers like this one has this sort of strange oh no gearing on one side which I've never seen actually you don't want to put these together like this because then of course it's gonna make a gap also one side of this is beveled a little bit so if I put it together like this it's also gonna make a little gap so I want to put them together with this flat side against that flat side these two rollers also are not exactly the same diameter I can feel it with my fingers this one's a little bigger don't worry about that because when you're printing and you're putting your packing on you know on top it's gonna even that out and you're not gonna have to worry about that terms of your print quality okay I'm gonna then take my wire make a loop pretty big loop put it on here and bring it all the way to the end here past this thinner area once it's past that thinner area I'm gonna kind of cinch it up all right gonna put my rollers on here and then I'm gonna put my other piece of wire around this other edge and tighten that down so that it won't slip now I'm gonna put it back in here but first I want to show you that this is the screw that attaches this whole plastic thing to here but there's a screw inside here that will help seat the shaft and we can raise and lower that so I'm going to lefty loosey and I'm gonna loosen this on one of the shaft housings and I can see by looking that it's lowered that I'm gonna adjust that further but for now I'm gonna put this in here notice that when I put it back in here I want my wire to not be rubbing the edge of these it will bind so I want it to be out on the edge like that now I'm gonna look at this and I'm gonna look at that space right there and see if it's even I'm gonna continue loosening these so that my roller slowly makes less of a gap there and I'm gonna loosen it down far enough so that there's hardly any gap there that's gonna give me the most printing room when I put it back on the side more than enough room for unmounted Lindo also too I'm looking to make sure it's even that I don't you know that I haven't lowered it unevenly okay then what I'm gonna do is the wire now is what's gonna attach my shaft to this housing instead of these screw these clips okay so I'm going to unloosen this Philips screw and you can use the pliers for this or just use your hand and I'm gonna wrap this around here cinch it tight and I'm gonna do the same thing to the other side lefty loosey righty tighty so I'm listening it enough so I have enough room to wrap this wire around it and then that's doing it I'm gonna cut off the excess here if I that isn't quite tight enough hold on I could leave those ends there it's not gonna hurt anything chances are though that if I had to come back in here and do this again I would just use a new piece of wire so there really isn't any need to kind of keep the wire there okay next step is I'm going to put this back in here there's a certain way that this goes this end plastic piece slips into that other piece so pay attention to that also you want to have the clips so that the clip the hook is like hooking this way so it'll hook into that hole right there okay so this just goes right back in there and then I'm just gonna attach it back with those little spring clips so now I've got my converted rollers on one side and it's raised so I hardly have any space here and I'm ready to put it back on to the base just want to correct something I said a few minutes ago this actually doesn't tell you the model number just gives you the patent numbers and stuff one machine that I bought actually came with the original you users manual thing and I believe that's where I found out what the model number was okay so once you've converted this and put it all back together again you just need to slide it back on sometimes these go on a little bit differently depending on what model you got if it looks like this it goes on slightly differently than the ones that look like this kind of makes sense right okay when you put it on there just want to remind you that you probably want your converted rollers to be on this shaft not on the leading one if you're gonna print this direction and you're gonna print this way obviously the rollers should be furthest to the left so pay attention to that when you're putting the housing back on most of these have this kind of uneven baseplate unlike this one which I was working on that had these plastic pieces a lot of them look like this and once you take this off this just slides right out so it's very easy but they usually have these kind of rivets in them holes in them so I just fill them with some chipboard or a combination of paper or file card whatever it takes until I get them up to an even surface there then after that you could just do like what I did on this one I have a file folder that's on top and then this is a piece of mylar that has my registration and this just clips like right underneath there's a little Ridge right there now you're ready to print I hope this has been exciting for you I hope you try this out and you can have your own little printer for printing at home your own little press if you would like my help in this at all feel free to email me it's SW 51 at home ball dot e-d-u I teach I'm a
