Publish date field

hey guys it's Jim here and in this video I'm going to just show you a quick tip up for removing dates from your wordpress posts and this is a cool one because on certain themes you know sometimes you get them at the bottom sometimes you get them at the top or over to the side but basically you write your blog posts and you've got this date showing over here and that's okay it's just that my preference personally is not to show dates here's why basically when I think about the the stuff I'm writing I generally try to make it stuff that's not you know real flash-in-the-pan you know trick for just right now it's only gonna work for a week I try to write stuff that is going to be good information that's gonna last a while and so for example this removing dates from WordPress posts I've been doing this at least seven or eight years in WordPress and you know frankly I could have written this article and and made this post a you know several years ago the problem is if you the visitor land on my website and you read this information or you watch my video and you see that this was something that was from several years ago you just got this natural mechanism in your brain that says hey this might be outdated information and when that happens you tend to want to you tend to associate outdated information with the blog you're reading and you also kind of think okay I better go check something for something more recent and just make sure this still works so you know I prefer to keep the visitors on my site and feeling like they're getting the right information for me and so I don't want them to have this natural sort of subconscious reaction going on that says oh this was written three years ago it's no good anymore and so that's why I like to remove these dates I want my content to be on the website and I want it to be kind of timeless so that's one of the first things I do when I set up a blog is I just go in and I go into my settings and remove the dates and let me just show you how to do that so let's go here I'm already logged into WordPress here I'm just gonna go over to the dashboard and so now all I do is go down to settings hover over that and then click on general okay so then what I do is just scroll down here on the general page to the date format and you don't really see one here there there is no option for don't show date so you have to go to custom and then all you have to do is just basically delete that stuff out of there so custom I don't mind leaving the time so that's that's always been fine to me and so I'll leave the time on there and in this particular theme the time doesn't show anyway so it doesn't matter but I just want to point out you know we'll go back to the post here in just a minute let me just save the changes here okay and then let's go back to our posts okay let's just view this post okay and then I'm gonna refresh this I'm probably gonna have to open this in a new browser window cuz I use Firefox and it seems to cache the pages and I kind of talked about that here you know whether you're using a caching plug-in or maybe your browser caches stuff like Firefox does you'll kind of get screwed up and you'll think oh maybe this doesn't work after all I'm just gonna copy the URL here and just open a new window and paste that in and then look at it okay and see you can see the dates been removed so that's what we're looking for so it's still written by me and you know everything's gonna look good but now there won't be just that little subliminal thing going on there that sort of dates my posts and basically starts to make them feel outdated like outdated information so that's that's why I like to remove him and that's how to do it all you have to do is go into the general under your settings and then scroll down to the date formats and just just remove it from there so rather straightforward and that's all you have to do I do mention here in the the post and I'll mention it to you now as well some themes hard-code this in and so they don't use the wordpress native settings to define the the date in the names and stuff here so what they do is they kind of they put that in they kind of override wordpress with it so if you find that even though you've cleared your cache and you've opened it in a new window or a different browser and you still see your date's probably it has to do with your theme and so there may you know there's still something you can do there but you just have to kind of dig into the the post file for the theme and get into the the PHP and stuff code and and make changes there so you know give that a try or just live with it or change themes you know those are all different options or just you know hire somebody on up work or Elance to to fix that for you it'd be rather inexpensive I'm sure so you know those are different options to remove the dates and I think it's a good idea to do it thanks a lot for joining me and we'll talk to you next time
