Realize initial
i felt so stupid and incapable and weak and vulnerable am i not as good with languages as i thought i was i know i initially said i'm not gonna speak any turkish today but and welcome back to my channel in case you don't know who i am i'm heber and this is roller coaster in case you expected me to speak in turkish today i'm sorry i need to disappoint you but i have two other videos on my youtube channel in which i do speak turkish so you can definitely go and check these out in today's video however i will be telling you about how i came to learn turkish how i started and i will also share a few of the struggles that i had along the way but first make sure you subscribe to my channel and click the bell so you don't miss any of my videos so in last week's language tag i already mentioned to you guys a bit about how i started to learn turkish and the turkish course that i had the thing is i started learning turkish around five years ago in the beginning i was not really that dedicated to the language i was just interested i started looking into it and later on it kind of developed into what it is now and if you want to know why turkish the thing is i live in austria and in austria there is a very very big turkish speaking community obviously i have many turkish-speaking friends after a while i realized that there were so many words that are so so similar to arabic or basically the same words do you know how it is when there's like a big community and everyone speaks that language you want to know what people are saying so after a while i wanted to kind of just look into the language and see if i can you know kind of understand what people are saying or follow conversations so i only started out with just listening to the arabic words in turkish because that's what i was familiar with and then later on i tried to kind of like you know look what people say on a day-to-day basis but i still had no idea what people were saying i would understand random words but i would have no clue what people were trying to say to one another and so one day i was walking down the street and then i saw a sign in front of an institute that was very new that said that there will be turkish courses offered in that institute and you can go there and just check out a few lessons and then see if you want to continue with the class or not so i thought why not and actually there is a friend of mine who's also arabic speaking who was also interested in turkish and i asked her if she wanted to join me initially she said yes but then when the day came and we had to go to that turkish lesson she didn't have the time she didn't come with me but i was like you know what i'm still gonna go i'm still gonna go check it out so because that institute and this turkish course was so new you had the possibility to just sign up for a few lessons for free and then you can decide if you want to continue with the whole turkish course or not so that's what i did i went there i sat in there for the first lesson and guys i felt so stupid and incapable and weak and vulnerable why because it was a beginner's class but everybody in that class was able to say at least something like introduce themselves or say something about their life or their friends just you know those simple things like my name is i am from i couldn't even say these things so i was so surprised that everybody else was already able to introduce themselves and say simple sentences and that really frustrated me also back then my teacher had just arrived in austria so he could not speak a word of german so he was only speaking to us in turkish which now speaking from a language teacher perspective is actually a very good thing but back then i was just feeling so frustrated because everybody else was understanding him at least a little bit but i had no clue what he was saying and i'm sharing all of that with you guys because i want you to realize how difficult it can sometimes be to start learning a new language because there will be moments where you feel frustrated and vulnerable and weak that was what i was feeling after these first few lessons because i felt like i was just so incapable and just couldn't speak compared to everybody else and the crazy thing is even though the teacher was super nice and he was very good at what he was doing it was not helping and i think that's also a very important lesson that as a teacher you could be doing everything right but still when your student does not have the motivation sometimes even that is not enough and i think that's something that i now looking back can say i know that back then it was all on me i had to find the motivation to go back again and to take that frustration and demotivation to take that negative energy and put it into something positive and try and channel it to my language learning process and so that's what i did as i said i was super frustrated i was demotivated and i felt very incapable you know what i was also doubting myself i was asking myself like am i not as good with languages as i thought i was etc etc so i'm sharing all of this with you guys because i know that so many people can relate to these feelings now after a couple of lessons i sat with myself and i asked myself will i let this demotivation and frustration stop me from continuing with my learning process or will i use that energy and put it to good use and you know what's crazy about this whole thing when i first walked into this building and into that classroom i did not really have the intention of taking a whole turkish course like i did not really think about that beforehand i was just trying to be open to this new opportunity and to this new language but then because i went there and i saw that everybody else was just much better than i was i felt so frustrated that i got so stubborn and i just said you know what i'm gonna learn this language and i'm gonna know it better than everybody else in the end so as you can see i'm a stubborn person i'm pretty competitive not in the negative sense though like i'm not trying to harm anybody else i just wanted to take that frustration and turn it into motivation and see the others as motivation for myself to improve myself and try and work on my language skills and so i continued to go to that course and for the first one and a half months i did not understand anything guys you have to imagine i'm sitting in that classroom people are talking all around me and i have no clue what's happening i understand certain bits and pieces and a few words but i don't know what's going on can you imagine how hard that is i mean imagine you're sitting somewhere and there's just so many conversations happening around you and you want to be part of the group obviously but you have no clue what's happening because everybody else is speaking a different language so that's how i was feeling for one and a half months and obviously my teacher was super nice but he couldn't really do much about it because he himself couldn't really speak any german or english so what did i do i went there every single lesson i sat in that classroom not understanding a word but i still went there why did i do that because i knew exactly that at some point i will have to see a certain result whatever it's going to be and that's what happened after one and a half months i started understanding a few of the things that were happening i started using a few words i started using a few sentences and you know what that initial frustration had such a huge impact on me that it developed into an addiction turkish became my new addiction my new challenge and i was using so much of my free time with turkish because i was using that initial frustration and demotivation to put more energy into my language learning process so why am i telling you all of this because i want you guys to realize that being frustrated being demotivated feeling incapable feeling that you want to give up all of that is part of the process and sometimes it's even very very essential for the whole process that's what happened with me i think if i hadn't been that frustrated at the beginning of my whole turkish learning process i wouldn't have continued learning turkish but because i got so stubborn and i really wanted to improve my turkish i did not give up and i continued and i took that frustration and turned it into something positive and something that was pushing me to learn turkish to improve my turkish so if you can take something away from today's video i hope it is this feeling frustrated feeling demotivated feeling discouraged or feeling like you want to give up all of those feelings are super normal we all experience them it is also up to us what we do with these feelings it's important we acknowledge that they are part of our learning process it's important to acknowledge that they are normal and sometimes even very very useful and important sometimes you just need a break you need a cup of coffee or tea but then go back try again and after a while you will see the results even if it means that you will be sitting in a classroom with a couple of people talking around you and you have no clue what's happening because you don't understand the word you know what now i can say i can speak turkish fluently so that's the result again if you want to check out my turkish i have two videos on my youtube channel in which i do actually speak turkish and i will be doing a video completely in turkish as well so make sure you subscribe to my channel so you don't miss that video i know i initially said i'm not going to speak any turkish today but isla is itchin foreign you
