everything homemade hey everyone it's rita with everything homemade and i'm going to show you how to sprout the most beautiful micro greens to give any of your meals a little kick this video is sponsored by mom sprouting seeds i have been using their seeds for years so i reached out to them while i use their seeds to show you how to sprout them and so they sent me some really cool stuff here they give me a few more sample seeds that i don't already have they also gave me some wonderful micro green trays they gave me their signature product sprouter that utilizes a simple canning jar they created this stand to hold it vertically so any excess water drips down it creates really good air circulation for the seeds and it comes with a wonderful little little plate here these are some examples that i will show you how to do this is red clover broccoli and eastern ancient blend i'm going to be showing you how to do some wonderful pea sprouts and so much more mom sprouting seeds would also love to give anybody who wants to order off their website 10 so you can use the code everything10 the only thing is they're updating their website this year so that code can't be placed in the cart but you can definitely give them a call or go on their website to their contact page and shoot them off a message say hey i just watched a video from everything homemade channel i would really like to place an order could i use everything10 and they will assist you from there so without further ado let's have some fun and let's get [Music] sprouting so i'm going to show you how to do red clover and red clover has got to be one of the easiest seeds to sprout now with red clover you notice how small the seeds are they're very tiny and so when you want to sprout really small seeds i don't really recommend sprouting them on a micro green tray because they are so tiny so the best choice would be just thing to just to sprout them in a simple canning jar so that's what we're going to use here today now i'm going to take it off its base i'm going to set this aside for a moment and what i'm going to do is just unscrew the top this setup you can definitely order from their website and they have this awesome insert this screen insert already made and that takes the fuss out of elastics or putting cloth on top now you can definitely do that don't get me wrong you can take a cheese cloth or a wire or a mesh material and put it over and put the elastic over what i do find though when you tip your jar over to rinse it always bulges and i mean it's real it's not that big of a deal but it's kind of irritating so to have a nice stiff screen like that to place in to place on top of your canning jar is quite handy okay so what we need to do here is i like to put i like to put about a tablespoon and a half into my jar and then i like to rinse it so i'm just adding a little bit of water here give it a little swirl there you go that just gets all the dust off of the seeds then what i like to do is just put the lid back on and pour the water out just like that and you notice that the screen is small enough that it's not going to allow those really tiny seeds to come out okay the next step is to soak these seeds for a few hours the smaller the seed the less soaking time you need so i'm going to put just enough to cover i'm only putting about a half a cup of water in here and then again i'm going to put my lid back on i'm just going to swish it around just to get the top seeds what i'm gonna do from here is just let this soak for a couple of hours that's all that's all it needs and then i'll show you what to do next now that a couple hours has gone by we need to drain out the water so i'm gonna grab my bowl again and i'm just gonna pour out the water now what i like to do is i like to just hold it there for a moment and let it drip for about 30 seconds longer and then i lift it up i'm going to put the bowl aside for a moment so what i what you see here are the seeds basically hanging out on one side of the jar and that's just cool i'm gonna leave it just like that the ones right here at the lid i sometimes just hit off so they kind of go back down but that's kind of how you want it now you got a couple options here depending on your lifestyle one you can definitely put your jar onto this holder here which works super well to drain all the water but if you work shift work or let's say you're out of the house for eight hours or whatever your circumstance is at this beginning stage i wouldn't recommend you doing that what i recommend is placing your jar on your counter just like this so find a secure area where you know if you have cats in the house or something like that that they're not gonna push it off the reason is because it allows that little tiny bit of moisture to be retained in the jar and when your seeds are at the critical point of germination they cannot dry out and what i find is is that if you drain the water after a couple hours put your jar vertical on this wonderful holder it is so efficient at draining the water out that i find that it drains too much water and so if i do this just before night you know rinse my seeds put my jar like this i find in the morning that my seeds are dry and that's not a really good thing so what i like to do is even though i'm a stay-at-home mom and work and have my business from at the house what i like to do is after the two-hour soak i drain the water and then i leave my container like this on the counter now you want to make sure that this is an indirect light you do not want sunlight um to be directly on your jar so what i like to do after that is i like to rinse my seeds morning and night and sometimes i will even do it at lunch especially if i'm in the first cup first couple of days and then once i see the seeds bulking up and the roots coming out and especially when you start seeing the first leaves then i will rinse and start putting the jar on the vertical stand because at that point your seeds have bulked up and they they generally retain more moisture when the roots are out the leaves are coming out they're at that stage where they're almost ready to eat then you want a better drainage so that's my little trick when it comes to sprouting in a canning jar like this right now continue watering them day and night keep your canning jar down for the first couple of days once you see the roots and you see that that it has your sprouts have taken off use the vertical and i will show you the transformation so what you're going to see first is this tiny little white root that will come out then in the next 12 hours that root is going to get a little bigger at 48 hours so that's two days the root is also going to grow after that 48 hours you're going to notice that a little tiny um sprout is going to come and that little green sprout will pop out with its first set of leaves you just saw the pictures of me going through the different stages of root development now this is three and a half days after we soaked the seeds and drained them and started watering morning and night look at the transformation it's incredible how they grow you have to realize that depending on the warmth of your house the seeds may take a little shorter time to get to the stage or a little bit longer so there's a variable in there but take a look at how much how much bulk is in this canning jar so this is the stage where you can see the green leaves just coming out it's looking really good this is the stage that i like to put it on the stand because of the bulk it holds in the moisture a lot better than just having the seeds at that critical at that critical time of germination so what i'm going to do is just show you what you should be doing at this particular stage so every morning and every night you want to continue to water your sprouts at this stage you have a couple of days before they're ready to eat so what you want to do is just take off the lid you want to use unchlorinated water and you're just going to pour the water over your sprouts and i like to fill it up all the way and what i like to do in the morning and in the evening is fill it up walk away brush my teeth come back and in that couple of minutes um they've absorbed enough water in the morning i just pour some water in while i make breakfast and a couple minutes i just drain it so you pour the water in let it soak for a couple of minutes and then you put back on the lid then you grab a container or if you want you can just put this down your sink i like to keep the water for my plants and then you just drain the water like that then what i like to do is just grab my stand put my jar up like that and walk away and let it continue to grow take a look at these sprouts this is only a day and a half later and you can see that they have filled out the canning jar completely this is the perfect stage to eat your sprouts you can see here that the first set of leaves are just about to open they've got a really nice sprout on them and now i'm going to show you how to store them in the fridge because you want to take them out of the canning jar because you don't want to you don't want them to grow any more than this what you want to do is put them in a container put them in the fridge and then while you're eating these sprouts you want to start new sprouts so what i'm going to do is move my jar and i just have a pyrex dish here just one of the low ones it's about an inch and a half tall i find these containers to work really good for me then the next step is to take a piece of paper towel i have two sheets here i fold them in half and then what i do is fold it in half again and this makes the perfect rectangle to go into my dish now whatever dish you're going to use you may have to fold your paper towel in a different way to make it fit perfectly then what i want to do is take a spray bottle with water and just spray my paper towel so it's damp you don't want to soak it you don't want it to be dripping just enough where when you hold it you can feel the moisture in your paper towel and that'll be perfect if it is too wet what you're going to do is just create an environment for mold to grow so now it's time to put your sprouts in to the container what you want to do is first of all you need to rinse your sprouts out and what you're looking for is to take these little seed skins and there's a really easy way to get rid of them before you store your sprouts and that way it just cleans up your sprouts some more i want to take them out and i'm just going to put them in a bowl and you can just kind of just shake your canning jar and they all fall out very easily so there's my sprouts four cups of sprouts from a tablespoon and a half a seed so now you can see that there is some seeds here that haven't germinated that happens all the time you can't expect every seed to always germinate but i want to remove these uh these seeds that haven't germinated so what i want to do is just pour some water on top of my sprouts and then what i want to do is just do this gently because you because you don't want to wreck your sprouts but just kind of loosen them up in the water and what that'll do is start um untrapping any more loose skins out of this out of this web of sprouts here so you can see all the skins right here at the top of my water i'm going to grab just a container i mean you can do this over your sink i'm just doing this on my table so it's a little easier to film and then what i'm going to do is just hold back my sprouts with one hand and pour out the water and you can see once again tons of skin seed skins floating on the water you have some more seeds so it just cleans it right up the other thing that that you're gonna notice is that the seed skins also stick to the outer side of your bowl as well so let's just give this one more rinse and then and then we'll put them in our container okay now that they are well rinsed what we want to do is just grab our sprouts from our bowl here and just place them into our container so once you got them in your container um you have a couple options you can actually just put them in the fridge open like this i like to spray them with the spray bottle about every three to four days if i do this technique the other thing you can do is you can use a lid to cover them but what you want to make sure is that the lid has some kind of holes or place the lid on an angle like that because you do need air circulation the sprouts are living they do need to breathe and you don't want to just put the lid on without any circulation like that because what you're going to do is choke them out of oxygen and you're going to grow mold sprouts can easily stay in the fridge for up to 10 days so now that you got your red clover all ready in the container it's time to enjoy them and i'm gonna show you one of my favorite ways to enjoy red clover for breakfast enjoy and thank you so much for watching we'll see you on the next video [Music] so [Music] hmm [Music] that's good that's really good [Music] [Music] you
