One of those safety nets for your Microsoft Soft account is a recovery code that can prove you are the authorized account holder should you ever need to go through a password reset or account recovery. Let me show you how to go about getting that recovery code. So here we are. We're in outlook.com. I'm signed into my Microsoft account. In the upper right, I'll click on the icon. In my case, I have a profile picture. You may just have letters in this little circle. That's fine. Either way, click on it and then click on My Microsoft Account. That takes you to the account management page. For your Microsoft account. Scroll down and click on Security. And then click on security dashboard. After Security Dashboard. Click on Advanced Security options. Now, here's the not so obvious part. This is, of course, the page on which you can play with your password. You can set up alternate email addresses. You can set up two factor authentication, all that kind of stuff. However, if you scroll all the way down to the bottom, you'll see an option to generate a new code. Click on generate new code. Now, before you do anything else, grab that code, copy it, print it, save it somewhere secure. Do something. You will only see this code once, and you will only see it here. If you return to this page to generate a recovery code, it will generate a new recovery code and invalidate all of the old ones that you may have had in the past. But the important thing here is to save this code and save it somewhere secure. Now the question, of course, is, okay, great, I've got a recovery code. I've stored it safely. When would I use it? Well, if you go through an account recovery process, you will often be offered multiple different ways to confirm you are the legitimate account holder. That could be sending a text message to a phone number you've set up. It could be sending a code to an alternate email address you've set up. It could be using your two factor authentication device. Now, one of the options that may be available, I have to say may because Microsoft does things weirdly, but one of the options that may be available if you are attempting to recover this specific account is the opportunity to enter in this recovery code. The fact that you are able to do that will prove that you are the person who should have access to the account and should be allowed back in. I hope that helps.
