[Music] hello auggies worldwide i'm dave casler amateur radio call sign ke0 og here with another episode of ask dave today's question comes from butch dapolito and he has an interesting question he has an elmer that he admires greatly but who passed away a few years ago and what butch would like to do is get this elmer's call he can do that through the vanity sign program but he's not ready for it yet he's still studying he's princessy [Applause] butch is still studying for his tech in general and what he wants to do is get this elmer's call sign when he gets his own amateur license now the way this works is that butch will get his own call sign and then apply for a vanity call sign and get the call sign of his elmer which apparently is still available i checked now here's the deal he wants to know if there's some way to put in a reservation for that call sign so that it won't be given away in the meantime well uh frankly the way it works that call sign which is available is available to anyone first come first serve there's no way to reserve things or anything like that my suggestion for butch would be to go ahead and get his technician i think the call sign is actually a general call sign but when you are ready go ahead and apply for the vanity call sign the thing is there's no reserving or anything like that and vanity call signs are available on a first come first serve basis and i mean that literally first in time uh gets to the top of the heap and if somebody else gets it in the meantime so be it so uh hope for it but don't get your hope set so much that if somehow maybe one of his elmer's friends or relatives or another student wants to get that call sign they may so i guess the bottom line there is hurry up study and pass your test and then you can get that call sign i think it's quite a tribute and i just point this out to all other hams of how grateful amateurs are to their elmers i still remember my primary elmer his name was tom he was a student one year ahead of me at brigham young and he is the one who administered my novice test to me the one who encouraged me to go ahead and get my license and everything like that and i remember him i've of course lost track of him all i remember is the name tom but he was uh i still i can see see him in my head right now as we sit in the cafeteria at byu uh talking things over there was a very nice club station there and as w7 ohr and still is there as far as i know it's still active...
