so today i wanted to show you one of my favorite tools when it comes to planning our trips and that is rv trip wizard we don't have any affiliation or anything with them i'm just showing this to you because we use it for every single one of our trips and i think it's a very useful tool and i wanted to show you how we use it so you can see whether or not it's useful for you to use so when you log into it i'm already logged in and i already have some settings set up so i'll go through and build a new trip but some of the features the first time you use it of course will be a little bit different because you have to do some of your settings and whatnot but when you log in after you've been in before you have an option to either open a trip one of the trips you've been working on or one of your previous trips or you can start a new trip and so i'm going to focus first on starting a new trip because i think that'll help you see how it works so i'll click that you can give it a name i'm going to pretend we're going to yosemite i'm just going to re do one of our trips pretty much do you know what day you're leaving um sure let's pretend that we are leaving tomorrow oh i already have a yosemite trip okay sorry yosemite too you can use your current location or you can which it never quite finds our location correctly so um but that has probably more to do with our vpn stuff or you can type something in here so i'm just going to say we are leaving from fort collins colorado and tell it to start here or you can choose something off of a map i usually just type in our address at this point and then what you'll do is it will open up your trip settings now these trip settings will have default settings that you determine the first time you go to use rv trip wizard and some of those can be saved in here by default but things like you know the trip name and trip notes you can add to that here and then sometimes i'll put a note in here like this is a trip we're going on with somebody else this is a 10-day trip two-week trip i don't think this would be a very useful trip if you're just like a weekend warrior and you just head somewhere that's pretty local within an hour or so for the weekend you're kind of going to the same place usually i don't think this there'd be a lot of benefit to use this tool rv trip wizard um just because it really is for distance planning and when you're trying to set up trips that are maybe across the country or throughout other states and places you haven't been that's really where you get your biggest benefit from this so anyway you can add trip notes and just type them in here trip status it just defaults to active and pre-departure email is an email that it will send you when it's the day before your trip to say hey you're heading to wherever the next day and you can see on a day-to-day basis what your next day is going to bring if i go up here to rv info like i said i have this built in here from before because i already put it in here we have a 13 six inch head clearance because of not only what we have on top for the rv but then our solar panels and the wireless things uh the internet things and stuff like that all kind of bring us up to thirteen seven so i put it in there's thirteen seven our length is thirty seven feet that doesn't account for the toe behind so maybe i should update that but so far i've left that at 37 feet it seemed to be okay and then our weight is probably actually more than 20 000 pounds but you can put that in here as a default and you can adjust it at any point in time so if i decide i really need it to really say 28 000 because that's probably more accurate then you can just make that change and then carrying propane i always use this to yes because we always have propane with us and apparently that becomes a problem sometimes when you're traveling out east there's certain bridges and stuff you can't go across if you have propane at least from what i've been told we haven't done that yet then over here on fuel type we have diesel fuel capacity our full capacity is 100 gallons but what's a better plan is to stick this as 75 and then put those last 25 gallons in the fuel reserve and so what that's going to do is it's going to make a mention to me that i don't have enough gas to get from point a to point b if i'm trying to put two destinations in without stopping to get gas or maybe it'll say we it doesn't see any gas stations in this distance um that could be a problem for you if you don't have enough gas so that's why you put the fuel capacity and the fuel reserve in here and then fuel economy we actually probably get closer to eight miles per gallon so i think the six is a little bit of a small number routing and driving you can set this will be on standard routing from the get-go and that's pretty much saying i have a car i can drive through anything right but you don't you have an rv now if you go over here and you set it to rv routing it's going to make adjustments and it'll let you know hey you're not going to be able to do this road and you can't do this road and that's really helpful to know that you're not going to be able to do certain roads but the problem i found with it is for a lot of the national parks there's a lot of roads that aren't necessarily cleared for rvs doesn't mean you can't get through and it doesn't mean you can't get to them but but rv trip wizard is using kind of like the truckers travel atlases and things like that to tell you hey this road is cleared for a large vehicle your size or we don't really have information on this road we're not going to tell you for sure if it's cleared or not so i'm going to leave this standard routing for now so it allows me to build a trip because there's a good chance it's not going to give me any option to do rv routing when it comes to trying to get to yosemite you can also come up here and say if you want to avoid certain things so like i don't want to be taking any fairies i should not have to take a ferry to go from colorado to yosemite i know i don't but that'll let you make sure to avoid fairies that comes in handy when we went to olympic national park because general routing tries to make you take the ferries that go kind of from the north part by cascades over to olympic without having to drive down through tacoma which is great and would save a lot of time except my rv can't do that so or at least not real easily so avoid fairies i think that's a good plan you could also avoid unpaved roads although like i said sometimes for the national parks that's going to be a problem over here you can set what your average speed is we usually on the highways on the interstates can go 65 but there's also times where you're just getting up to speed or you're in town so you're not driving that quickly so i just set that as 55 as my average speed and that seems to work pretty well and then the driving radius is really cool i use this all the time i'll show you what that's about this says show a classic driving radius what this will do is it will take your last point so here is lubbock texas okay so here's amarillo so if you're staying a night near amarillo and then you want to know how far you are from other sites the next day you can set up these radiuses and i'll show you where we're going to set the radiuses but it'll give you a green mark for the closest radius and then yellow and then red this is the classic radius and the classic radius is like a bullseye it's basically the bird's eye view for that driving radius now i like to use the advanced driving radius and that's because see this what this is actually doing it's not giving you a bird's eye view of what's you know 400 miles away or whatever you set your radius it's showing you where the road goes and how far is that road going to be up to 400 miles or whatever you set the mileage for the radius so this is much more useful because when you're driving on windy roads especially for somewhere like yosemite the bird's eye view for 20 miles is a lot different than my actual driving distance on switchbacks for 20 miles so i set this to advanced driving radius and then down here is where you can either choose your driving distance to be so many hours per day so if you say i've got back problems i can only do four hours a day set this as the preferred distance calculation is that you want it per hours per day we don't do it by hours per day we do it by distances so we have our minimum distance at 300 that will be the green line middle distance is 400 that's our yellow line and then if we really push it we can do 500 miles in a day and that's this red line and we don't like to do a lot of 500 mile days but i stick that in there in case we really need to do it anything beyond that we're not going to do jeremy's going to want to kill me if i have him going 700 miles a day that is just not going to work so we set up our distances for 300 400 500 and you might have a different distance 100 200 300 is all you want to drive or you might have hours per day you can set either and it's really nice that it lets you do whichever way you want to do it and then the last part is expenses so generally i have this set for 50 for camping i don't know that that's really high enough it probably should go up to 60 but um you know what i'll just adjust it for this trip if i can get a state park maybe i will be lucky enough to have like 30 a night but if i'm staying at koas and stuff i'm probably closer to 65 a night so you can set this as a default you can set your meals as a default we usually bring all of our meals with us so we're not we don't tend to eat out miscellaneous expenses are things like you know souvenirs from the national park stores things like that i can set that up and then the cost per gallon for your gas and right now i think we still probably are about three dollars a gallon for diesel but if i'm heading to alaska or through canada i might bump that up to four or five and then you can decide if you want to recalculate after each stop i just have it do a general one for the trip and i find it's generally pretty accurate with these estimates because we've done enough trips i can kind of go off of this so now i'm done with my trip settings i'm going to save those trip settings and it'll build my trip doesn't take real long it has me starting from old town fort collins it looks like and now what i can do if i want to change any of those trip settings you just come up here to where this wrench is at and you can click that and you can choose trip studying trip settings there's a bunch of other stuff here as you can see when you're done building your item you can send it to a friend who has rv trip wizard and then they can open the plans up in their version of our rv trip wizard you can i haven't done visitor review i haven't sent to a gps i email the itinerary to myself every time and i email a copy of our itinerary to usually both sets of our parents so that somebody knows where we are and where we're supposed to be throughout our trip i think it's just a good safety thing plus it kind of helps them know where we're at you can export it to your calendar i think i've done that before i've not made it go to excel that's probably useful especially if you're doing budget tracking you can print it i always print it as well because i don't know if i'm always going to have internet access to get into it um you can just print the maps and then do like turn by turn on your directions and stuff like that you can copy the trip especially if you're not sure if you have a few extra days you want to adjust something you can just copy the whole trip and then build the changes on the other one and then delete it so we are actually going to start by looking for the next place that we want to camp so we're heading to yosemite and from colorado from fort collins area here's my driving radius i have a few options i can head up to highway 80 interstate 80 and head over to salt lake city or i can head down through i-25 to denver and then head out through i-70 and start working my way west so i'm just gonna do this the same way we ended up doing it we actually intended on our yosemite trip to head down and go to joshua tree and we were going to head this way but there was a horrible blizzard at the end well middle of october and it closed i-70 and it closed i-25 south so we had no choice but to head north and so we said hey let's just go to yosemite so that's pretty much how we built that trip so you can see here i can get as far i can comfortably get as far as like rawlings or rock springs that first night if i want to push it i can maybe get out to like evanston or some of these areas there's a nice resort over here maybe i'll pick that one we actually ended up going all the way to salt lake that first night because we had a really early start so let's zoom in and see as you get to salt lake city there's a lot of different parks that you can go to so right now you're just seeing the road you're not seeing any parks but if i come up here these are your icons for different things that you can see so you can show and hide all the campgrounds now if you're stretched out and you're on the full usa map it's going to take a while to load all these little icons for the campground so i usually don't load that up until i'm kind of more zoomed in and i'm actually to the point of choosing a campground otherwise if i'm picking my routes and stuff i sometimes turn that off you can do different filters oh so the filters are things let me show you so i have a filter where it shows me good sam parks because we have a good sam membership it shows me state parks because we tend to like staying at state parks it shows me koas and so it makes sure to highlight those and put those on my list all these other ones are general parks but they don't meet one of those requirements of either being good sam or koa or a state park so in general you're still going to see all the campgrounds that you have access to but for me i can quickly look and say here's a koa i'm comfortable at koas and i might and i probably will look at that first before one of these random ones that might not really work for us the other thing up here you can show or hide points of interest so you know that might show up for you as like different the national parks things like that and then you can show or hide hazards and the hazards are things like tunnels that you would have to go through actually let me just show that um okay so here we go so here this is saying somewhere one of these roads i'd have to zoom in to see which one there's going to be a um bridge and it's less than 10 feet in height so i cannot go under that bridge and so it's giving me the hazard warning now my guess is this is an underpass from the highway the highway is not going to have a 10 foot bridge but probably a road that goes underneath the highway is where that less than 10 foot thing is coming from so for now i don't really need that i'm just going to uncover that but let me zoom in a little bit more choose a site okay so there's this nice resort we have never stated it we always say we want to stay at it over here outside of colville yeah echo island okay so we see this like every oops i didn't mean to zoom in i meant to scoot over so if you do the zoom with your fingers you're going to zoom in i'm on a touch pad on a mac okay here we go you have to click down see the little hand and then you can drag and move your map that's how you move your map otherwise it's going to zoom in for you okay so here we are you can click on the icon and it will show you more details about the campground so you can see a general picture you can see what people have rated it this ties into camp gam campground reviews so if you use that you already have an account set up you can go in and you can read more of the reviews in general though actually this is a little bit different than the last time i saw it so let's see it's showing you some of the features you know internet pet friendly electrical stuff like that and if i click here to and it shows you kind of general pricing and how far it is from your last stop so that's what the miles are here you can add it to your trip right away or if you want to see more details you can click this park details i usually click this park details if it's somewhere i haven't been and you can see a bit more information you can go here this is the link for website and i often will click that and go to the website to do my booking especially like for a koa or something so you can go and do your booking from here it'll show you if it has anything like a good sam discount stuff like that down here you can scroll through and look at more images if there's images loaded into here and again this is tied to campground reviews so that's where it's pulling this information from you can see features so this is a park that has all your features big rig friendly has electrical sewer all that kind of stuff you can see a couple general reviews it's going to show you the most recent first which is kind of useful especially with covid it was kind of tricky trying to plan for trips now rv trip wizard had a set up where the coved parks that were closed they have an option where you can show or hide the parks so if parks were campgrounds were closed because of covid it would it could take them off your view so you didn't accidentally book somewhere or think that you had an option to stay somewhere and then they ended up not being open but i also could read the comments from people and you can learn a lot from the comments you can see when they stayed what the price was and then their general uh remarks and if you want to read more you have to go to campground reviews and log in and see that uh tips and tricks so some other people will give you some information like you know here's some useful stuff there was a great park nearby that kind of stuff and then i guess that's uh average weather stuff so you can see what that's like all right so we've decided yep okay i want to go ahead and do this place i can come over here and click add to your trip and it will ask you how many nights when we're on our way on the journey to a place we're usually just staying one night and then it by default we'll say add this after our last stop and for me the last stop was that address in fort collins or i could just let it default to the last stop and i could put down comments so um check out echo reservoir oops okay so i want to make a little note that i want to check out the reservoir while we're there in town add that to your stay okay cool so i have my first spot now so you kind of get the picture i can zoom out and now that this is my last spot and this is which item is highlighted if i went back to here this would be highlighted that shows you the first stop but i'm going to go back to echo island where my second stop was outside of salt lake city zoom out and as i zoom out i'm going to get my radius distance guy back in here and see how far i can go okay so i'm gonna hit to somewhere in nevada we actually did this trip and we went to great basin so i can do great basin in a second but i want to show you that we went to yosemite and actually booked the yosemite location as soon as we were leaving the house in colorado because i knew that would be the hardest reservation to get kind of being a last minute trip and then we just picked other places in between but i knew that i had a set reservation in yosemite so let's pick that park in yosemite and i don't remember what it was called it's going to be one of these guys i think we stayed it was in groveland uh it was one of these i don't know i'm gonna pick yosemite pines nope i don't think that was the one i think it must be one over here but that's okay so we'll just pretend it's here so i'm going to add this to my trip because yosemite doesn't have a lot of options not for big rigs and when you're staying outside of the park and i'm going to stay two nights for now we're going to make it after the last stop because i don't have another stop in between there and we could lock the date of stay at some point so let me just add this real quick let me add that this is going to have two nights okay i'm gonna go back to salt lake and we are heading let's see we left salt lake and we went to great basin oops great basin national park and we tried to go to this campground but they have like 11 spots in the winter and we didn't get one but i didn't know that at the time so i thought yeah we're just gonna head here so i say add to my trip now i'm going to add this after not the last stop that i've put in here because i threw that yosemite reservation in there and that's useful to do too if you already have a confirmation number and you want to track all that i can show you where we do that but what i want to do now is after we leave echo island ranch after we leave salt lake we're heading to great basin so i want this to be a one night stay after we have been at that salt lake location so i'll add that to my trip which is pretty much what we did oh look i've got a hazard over here i've got something over here this is probably telling me this road is not open hmm guess i don't know what that is i thought if i clicked on it it would give me some notice doesn't really matter because whatever that little road is i could just take this road into baker and then go over here so okay not gonna be too worried about that that's not a real problem for me um but what it's doing let me take off my campgrounds and hide the hazards and let me show you something so here it's building my trip for me the route that i need to take so i'm heading from fort collins salt lake area heading down over by kind of eli here's um great basin and then this is the route that it's having me take and this is the route we did take this highway 6 over to get to yosemite now we ended up sorry wrong way we ended up coming down through here and staying in mammoth lakes the next night so what we're seeing over here the distance from fort collins to that first location is 436 miles it'll take me about seven hours and 55 minutes so almost eight hours we're gonna stay one night this is how much my cost will be between the campground and the fuel cost and what i put in for miscellaneous so that's how it's estimating 184 dollars the next night to get out to great basin it's only 282 miles will take us five hours one night and here's the cost now i can adjust that cost and do whatever so if i know that the campground's only going to be like 18 i can adjust that and make changes and then the next night to head over to yosemite pines 452 are 452 miles 8 hours 200 bucks and that's for two nights so there you go here's my route but here's the interesting thing okay this is january i stuck this in as a trip in january and anyone who's been to yosemite and knows this area knows that tioga pass is not open in the winter okay this is tioga pass this is not open if you went to stick great basin in your apple maps and you said you're heading to you know yosemite pines over here in groveland it's going to run you all the way up here to reno and then over here and then you can head down because you cannot cross the sierras in the winter the roads close and there's no other road that goes across so here's one problem and limitation with the the app is that it doesn't it's not smart enough to know that this road is closed even though your apple maps knows that it doesn't know that so that's my problem number one and hopefully they can figure out a way to work that out because nothing's more frustrating than being the person in the winter that had some nice weather and said you know what we're gonna be over here let's just head over to yosemite and then you figure out you can't get there without a five hour detour to come up and around all right so uh we'll ignore that this road's actually closed i'm just gonna go for it we'll pretend it's summertime so from here now we headed on to here's the hide your coveted parks by the way so if anything's closed this should actually let me click that because california oh while the private california parks are open but if i tried to do a california park that was like within yosemite i bet it would not allow me to choose it not like they're going to be open this time here anyway but i'm curious does it think that the great basin one is still open let's check it out okay well it's still got it in there maybe because i already chose it or maybe because that's in nevada it's not actually closed but the california parks are closed right now the the public ones at least and the national parks and stuff all right so next stop i would hit off to we went to sequoia sequoia national park and um i don't really know where we're going to stay so i'm just going to choose the point of interest of sequoia national park and hey it's only 200 miles away of course i can't necessarily drive all the roads that would take me to it but i don't know that yet and this isn't telling me that so here okay it says you're heading to sequoia you don't have to set any nights so if you're like okay we're visiting um actually let's do yosemite village that'll be a better one so yosemite village at yosemite park point of interest more details i'm going to add this i'm not going to do one night of stay because i'm not actually staying in the village i just want to go see it for the day so you can save it as a stop and it's kind of nice to save it as a stop because then you'll have it on your map and your directions but for us that doesn't really apply because we're not taking our rv all the way in to this spot we're taking the jeep and so i don't have to deal with the clearance issues and the diesel use of fuel or anything like that to go to the stop so this price point isn't right because that's basing it on the rv and you know distance and time and all that stuff might not be right but i think what's more interesting is that it doesn't think that i'm going to be hitting a bunch of tunnels here which i am and i'm not going to be able to make it through let's see if it rocks us through the wawona tunnel that'll be really that'll be a big problem and i ran into this when uh we booked our trip okay so we stayed at somewhere called lemon cove rv park really liked it down there this is where we stayed when we went to sequoia next so i'm going to add this to the trip hang out two nights here after our last stop which is i'm going to pick it from the campground actually i can't pick it from the campground because then it's gonna have me route all the way back up to the village so i'm gonna click and drag this so that this is after going to the village and being at the pine resort and all that stuff you just click and drag these to move the order and i'm interested to see what highway it thinks i can take yeah okay this is the same problem i had before i hope they get this figured out someday okay oh i'm still in standard that's right i'm still in standard okay so what it's doing it had me take tioga passover i'm staying in groveland and then i'm driving my car in for the day it doesn't know that though it doesn't let you choose two vehicles i wish it would and then but it does say hey when you go to leave you're not going to head out this way and take the highway out over to fresno you're going to come down you're going to take go through the wona tunnel which you're not because you're not going to fit if you're in an rv and it says you're going to head south from here okay that's not going to work this tunnel is like 10 foot 5 clearance there's no way i can fit through that the buses and stuff nobody else goes through that right so very few rvs are going through that let me go to my trip and switch my settings because i think my problem was i'm not on rv i'm not okay so let me switch it over to rv routing and see if it adjusts how it drives us around there give it a second to rebuild all right so now if we zoom in it still did it okay so this is not accurate right you can't go through this there's a tunnel down here that's ten foot i think it's four or five inches so no way i'm fitting in there at 13 7. so that's not accurate we had to come out this way we actually ended up i think driving down to mariposa this is all just like mountain and nightmarish and we ended up heading out and coming all the way out here to um this road so we could start taking that so that is very unfortunate because this this is not a route i can take and that's why i wanted to check it out with yosemite so great tool i love how i can lay out our trip um let's pretend from this point time we're heading back because i don't want to make this a two-hour video we actually continued on went to disneyland some other stuff but let's just head back um let's head back up west and we're gonna stop at um the rifle koa because that's one of our favorites to head to oh it's not picking up the rifle koa okay let's go to glenwood springs we have family near there so pic there's my there's my koa that i love okay so let's add it we're gonna stay one last night there at the end add it to our trip so from okay so from sequoia outside of sequoia in lemon cove uh heading all the way to glenwood is going to be 947 miles which is too far that's 17 hours of driving and we're not going to do that so i'll have to build in another put another park in there but just to give you an idea this is kind of what it can look like and then at the end you say round trip option you can mirror back and go back the way you came or you can do a direct route back to your starting point which i'm going to do at this point and then that'll get us home so i have a full trip if i zoom out i don't need to see all the campgrounds i'm going to turn those off zoom out you can see i'm starting up here heading out this way going down and around and coming back and at this point time i can go in and edit anything i want i can email the itinerary so i usually do that to myself and to our parents i can print it out sometimes i email and see what it's going to look like and then i'll print it out you can set up different preferences when you go to print so it's really helpful and useful and of course you can set up you can do different things in your trip settings so it's really a useful tool i love it but man i just can't trust it all the time so i know that i knew these tunnels were a problem fortunately i looked on the website i talked to other people i think in general it's probably going to be fine and it's going to get you where you need to go but it's a huge bummer to get over here by yosemite and realize you've got a five hour detour to get around the sierras or that you can't drive through the tunnels and you needed to you only had one route to get into yosemite village in your rv and you couldn't take the other two routes so those are the kind of little details that it's just not quite finessed enough to get you that level of detail but 99 of the time it's probably going to be fine i think you just need to double check on either your trucker atlases so if you have one of the big paper trucker atlases we use those to make sure which routes are safe and then i talk to other people sometimes i'll even pull it up in google earth and see what a route looks like because you realize oh my gosh look at those switchbacks and how narrow that is and i don't think we're going to fit and that's going to work and so you do sometimes have to do a little bit of extra research it's not a big of it issue when you're out in the plains but but man when you are up in the mountains it can be a real problem so just so you know i like this tool i think it's really great i think it's only like 49 for the year and we definitely find it's useful for that price and we use it for every trip it helps me find different parks where we're going to go the route that we generally can take but sometimes i have to make adjustments and if i need to make an adjustment like i know i can't take the route it's telling me i can have a stop in here like to fresno california so it'll route me out of the area where i'm at get me over to fresno and then take me on the highway from there because that's the route i'm actually going to take so you might have to do a little bit of adjustments but overall really great tool hopefully this was useful to you you can also go open up your previous trips and see your old trips you can archive the trips um you can come back and edit this anytime you want so hopefully this was useful to you oh and they have a they have an app as well really when you're building your trip you need to be in the desktop because you can see how dynamic this is and it doesn't really function this way on the app the app will let you view your trip so it's just kind of like just the same as like i email this to myself it's basically kind of a view mode of the trip but you're not fully building it and doing all of the modifications that you're doing here in the desktop so you definitely need to work this on your desktop and then you can have a view that goes to the app or that comes to you by email so hopefully this was helpful thanks for watching
