what is going on everyone today I wanted to share two of my own personal letters of intent that I use to apply for residency in hopes that it will help you in your applications all right so as I just mentioned I'm going to be sharing two of my own personal letters of intent one when I applied to p2i one and one when I applied to pgy two now it's important to note that this is not something to base your own letters of intent on but just additional examples that you that will help maybe say what you should do and what you maybe shouldn't do because for pgy one my application I applied to seven programs got three interviews and got I did not match as many of you know so maybe take from this what you probably shouldn't do and then for my picture why to I applied to seven programs and I got seven interviews so maybe using that more as a template if you will but both of them I would say are good templates the content is key not so much your template the template I think is important because you want to hit on certain key elements in your letter of intent which many of you probably already know about but the content is key so I just go ahead and read it use it how you will and hopefully it will help you all in your applications all right so let's start with the first letter of intent for my PGI one residency so in the very beginning the first paragraph what I like to write is which program I'm addressing any experiences or engagements I've had with the program those always nice kind of a personal touch especially if you had specific residents or the director you can name them on who you spoke with and then just some positivity in that introduction so I here I write dear dr. Rob I'm writing to express my interest in the Detroit receiving a hospital PTI one pharmacy you residency program I had the opportunity to meet with your current residence would be nice if I set their name there at the AHP making your clinical meaning their excitement and positive affections of the Red Sea experience further invigorated my desire to pursue rather see training at your institution a little generic probably coulda used a little bit more touch but it was also direct to the point I think I would have liked to modify it a bit more though to be more personalized the second paragraph usually is my own desire kind of like why I think I I want to pursue residency so a little bit about your why so and and why you think a reson C is needed because of residency is optional so that's what I try to do kind of summarize some of my key experiences that I pull out so I go the first three years of pharmacy school develop my knowledge in pathological disease states intricate drug algorithms and countless acronyms however my rotations helped delineate the importance of clinical judgment from assessing the validity of a vancomycin trough to confronting an unprecedented to pursue cpr I realized that my rotations only provided a glimpse of actual practice so kind of setting that gap there though some of the the stories I use and examples were that great there were all personal stories if someone asked me about I could expand upon but it may not have been the best examples to use the serenity will move me into an exemplary practitioner with the experience and knowledge to provide optimal patient care fry it a little bit of fluff there that I mean you need kind of a transition sentence but that was a little bit of fluff not so great the next one is more about why you qualify so the third paragraph why you really qualify for a position at this residency site and why what your goals are and I like to usually put that in there so why you qualify what makes you a good candidate and what your goals are so I firmly believe in a multi-faceted approach to learning choosing to complete my clinical rotations across a diverse group of hospitals enabled me to grasp multiple electronic medical records comparing different pharmacy practice models and utilize a variety of approaches to patient care so the the letter of intent really complements your CV if you look at my CV during my PGP four rotations I did a different rotation at a different site every month for that purpose to look at different pharmacy practice model so I I thought was a pretty strong comment to make especially be compared to the CV all right self-motivated in hard working I challenge myself with rigorous rotations to prepare myself for treating the most complex patients and that was kind of a reference to how I structured my p4 rotations where I really picked very rigorous clinical rotations so hopefully that complements the CV pretty well as well my induction into the rock I Society further demonstrates my work ethic and dedication to patient care and so that's kind of the reasons why I qualify and should be considered as a competitive applicant the next couple pieces is really about your goals after residency so upon completion on the PTO I want two residency I plan to pursue either a fellowship in infectious diseases or a pjy two residency in critical care emergency medicine or flexures disease my long-term goals would be to practice at an academic Medical Center as a pharmacy specialist and conduct research to advance antimicrobials and mitigate resistance part of why the goals is important is because you want to see if the institution can even help you meet those goals you know as an institution if Canada is applying and we can't help them achieve those goals then it's kind of a moot point and you might not be considered in that aspect the last paragraph is usually why that program is a particular interest to you you know ideally what you would want to do is write an embed throughout your letter of intent why you want to apply to that program but it's it was so jam-packed for me I'm not the best writer and so I usually just include it at the very end so the last paragraph your program exemplifies the key features I'm searching for in a residency an exceptionally challenging program that possesses a strong support of mentors and continually strives to advance the profession of pharmacy it's kind of a fluff statement additionally your program exclusively offers the three pgy two specializations of my interests leading me to believe that I will receive excellent training at your institution so this is more pinpointed where you know they know that you look into their program you're applying to the program because they're p2i two specializations actually matched your own in your goals I strongly conclude that your renze program will allow me to fulfill my aspirations and I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to Detroit receiving hospital thank you for your consideration whoo that's kind of a basic generic a letter of intent it's definitely not strong by any means could use a lot of work so I mean this is kind of late in the game now for any major revisions but definitely get as many eyes as you can on reviewing your content and try to make it as personable and specific to that hospital as possible my py 2 letter of intent is pretty similar to the first one the same kind of template no real major difference is mainly the content I think the content approved a little bit the writing a little bit but it still wasn't as strong it did give me seven out of seven interviews but I think I could have used more writing proofreading because my writing skills aren't the best but so pretty much the same template first introduction is you know kind of experience and engagements with the program second one was you know kind of your why I'm why you're pursuing this pgi2 residency specialization third is why you qualify and why you're a competitive candidate and then kind of following suit your goals and then the last paragraph of why you want to apply to that program alright so I just go ahead and start reading dear doctor do I am ready to express my interest in the PYD farm scene for my next run C program at Oregon Health and Science University it was a pleasure to meet you and dr. Kelly it's a little bit more specific there through the PBS interview at the AHP mid-year meeting so that's a little better than the PGI one letter of intent I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about your program and left with a very positive impression and consequent desire to pursue renze training at your institution Rena C train these past few months has continued to solidify the clinical skills I've obtained in pharmacy school more importantly it has helped delineate the type of specialized training I want to pursue pharmacy informatics my firsthand experiences while staffing has allowed me to fully realize and appreciate the potential of health information technology to improve patient care it's kind of getting to that why there additionally having majored in computer engineering up until my sophomore year in college I have a natural tendency and persistent eagerness to improve efficiency and optimize outcomes a little bit of fluff it was kind of a nice touch to add the computer engineering because it adds a little bit more personable experiences so I like that but the the latter part is a little bit more fluff completion of an informatics rotation this past September has strengthened has further strengthened my goal to pursue a career in informatics so there's really nice something I encourage students to do is if you're looking at a specific pgy to try to complete a rotation earlier in the year so you can have this statement in there so really confirm and say hey I did a rotation before mid-year I'm applying to this specialization because this truly is something that I really want it just helps to add why you want to do that specialization the next paragraph I firmly believe that I have the skills qualities and experiences that will allow me to succeed in a project driven informatics run see that may be a little bit fluff but it was ok during pharmacy school I excelled academically with induction into rokai home my clinical skills by selecting rotations that mirrored a PGI one residency and held multiple leadership positions including webmaster for a mCP and ASP so a lot packed in there I thought they were ok examples certainly highlighting a diverse group of skills so yeah academic leadership and just that I think experiences two major projects I directed where the creation of the first web-based store for a mCP in the promotional video for the 2011 ASP mid year regional meeting so kind of highlighting different skill sets especially project driven skill sets which is important for informatics so something else to consider in your specialization really talk about projects or experiences that you've had that help add to why you be good for that specialty during my pgy year one year the success of my mu ian for research project further attest to my qualifications my early initiatives to create reports collect data and set up meetings have allowed me to progress very efficiently it was it's I thought it was an OK statement it didn't really convey what I wanted to convey which was pretty much that I was very successful in getting my mue done especially the data collection piece because I was good with getting data but that didn't really convey that could have been rewarded a little better outside emergency I am also able to maintain my own website teach myself Microsoft Access and Excel and volunteer within my community a little fluffy could have could have been tweaked in some ways I don't I'm not a great writer so that's what I said now going into the goals upon completion of a PT y2 I plan to pursue a career in pharmacy informatics and continue to advance my education through board certification and a master in healthcare informatics my long term goal will be to work at the CDC as a leader in public health and become a pioneer in infectious disease informatics I think that's pretty good pretty pretty objective straight and direct to the point and then the last piece your program exemplifies the key features I am searching for in a residency as the first SHP accredited pharmacy for max program I will undoubtedly receive exceptional training from a seasoned program opportunity to gain experience and proficiency with the leading of chronic health record epic will allow me to gain marketable informatics skills lastly based on the PPS interview I strongly conclude that your program will be an excellent fit I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to the Oregon Health and Science University thank you for your consideration so I think this one certainly is an improvement over the PGI one letter of intent I think the primary thing that's missing is I could have used a lot more proofreading and revisions by someone who can write a lot better than I can so I think that's the main thing but anyways that's kind of the end of the video I hope this helps in some way with your applications I think one of the better letters of intent which I'll share maybe in a few days is my letter of intent for my mph program which is nothing to do with pharmacy residency but I think that one more clearly articulates and conveys a personal story a personal message and has a personal touch as to why I want to pursue training in public health so hopefully that one will be somewhat helpful even though you might not be as interested but I'm gonna group that one with my mph playlists versus my pharmacy residency one so be on the lookout for that hopefully that's helpful but anyways I wish you all the best there's a lot of stuff going on as you embark on finalizing your renze applications and then uh yeah wish you the best of luck and until next time
