what's up guys my name is Murali and in this video I'm gonna be talking about how to write an update letter and this is a video in a series I'll be making about applying to medical school and if you wanted to see any of the other videos there you can look at the playlist on my channel so for some background I am going to I'm an incoming medical student this fall in the US and I just applied in this past 2020 cycle and I actually did write an update letter during my application season so I feel like I have some advice that I can give about this given my experience and I hope that this information is useful for you who may not know whether or not you even want to write an update letter or and what to put into an update later so I hope this video is useful for you okay so why do you want to write a pillar when I felt through it I think there were three reasons why I wanted to write a letter and these reasons helped me navigate what I wanted to put into that update letter so the biggest thing is that like a lot of time has progressed since the last time you communicated with med schools or since your last submission usually for your secondary application is your last sort of communication that you have with medical schools until your interview so you want to finish your secondary applications around end of June above that's like a good goal to have but from there to your interview can be a really long period of time and that can be a very stressful period where you don't know if medical schools are actually looking at what you've been writing so during that period between your secondary application and your interview invite there can be a long period of time that a lot of stuff might have changed so using an update letter is a good opportunity to tell medical schools what you've been up to and what you think is important for them to know the second reason you might want to write an update letter is to express interest in that in that school so tens of thousands of people are applying to medical schools across the country everyone might not the same amount of interest in those schools so in order to really stand out to the admissions committee it can be useful to show that you are actually very interested in that medical school and you can do that through an update letter also because of the sheer number of applications that medical schools get there might not be as much attention focused on to your application as you might want and so sending an update letter can be a good way to bring your to bring your application to the top or to send them something or notification so that they look at your application so just to alert them and let them know that you your application still exists okay so now I'm going to talk about the structure of the update letter and what you should put in each of those two parts so first the introduction and in this I'm in Corp including the address line at the top so dear whomever don't put it just to whom it concerns that's very generic and boring and it already starts you off on a very general sort of foot so you want to be specific and so I suggest writing dear admissions committee of X of school so if you're planning to Harvard Medical so dear harvard medical school admissions committee even the other thing you can do is if you've been getting emails and notifications from that medical school at the bottom of those emails that probably says who the dean of admissions is at that school and so if you put dear dr. Smith and the Harvard admissions committee and do that that's a good way to let them know that you have been paying attention you know who people are in your addressing your letter to the right people so just small things like that take note and make sure that you put those in there all right and then the other point of the introduction is to explain the purpose of your letter so you don't want to waste the emissions committees time so you want to be sure to let them know exactly what your goal is in that letter I am still very interested in your medical school and I would like to be a student there and given the time since my last submission since my secondary application I'd like to give you an update on what I've been up to that's I think a good thing too but in your introduction let them know start off on the right foot of addressing them correctly and then let them know exactly what you want to do in this letter and then you can move on to the body now one tip that I have for your letter just like with all of your other essays for your application is to be concise I think your letter should be around one page in the length you don't want to send them a bunch of pages and one page is a nice succinct concise sort of length so I said that as you go but that means you have to pack a lot of good material into that one page in the actual body of your essay or your letter I suggest you go through around two or three meaningful experiences or updates some examples for stuff you can talk about include research talk about class work school projects volunteering any notable GPA changes I think that's a pretty valuable thing to talk about I talked about that in Mike's and in my update letter so but let me yourself to two or three you don't want to overwhelm them with a bunch of different experiences also if you have so if you have so many updates that you're talking about five different updates in one six your secondary application then the question is why wasn't all those things why weren't all those things in your secondary application so make sure to look and choose specific things that have changed and are important enough for you to update med schools about and then when you're talking about these experiences in your letter you sure to summarize at the end of each paragraph summarize each paragraph and what you learned so talk about what you learned and gained based on those updates and those experiences and what you'll bring to the Medical School so an example of this could be if you've made some headway on a research project that you're working on in lab or something like that you would say that this experience taught me a lot about science but it demonstrates my scientific curiosity and my determination which will be valuable assets in medical school as a student and a doctor so make sure to tie all of your experiences back into what will you bring to the community and medical school the next if I have for you is to make it personal this goes in with the admissions the addressing into the correct admissions committee you don't want to just send the same letter to all of the schools that you're sending an update letter to it's generic it doesn't seem personal and you won't make a connection with the admissions committee so what I suggest doing is talking about your values and how in your experiences over the past few years and talk about how those align with the school and maybe its mission or it's curricula that'll help you a lot in terms of making the connection and show why you want to go to that medical school for example if you've worked with homeless communities in the past you can talk about what you learned and those experiences but you can also tie in and say hey because of my experience here I appreciate how you guys at XYZ medical school are committed to addressing underserved populations and I want to be a part of that and learn more about that and obviously only say that if that is actually part of the medical mission and they've shown a commitment in this sort of in certain fields by top bringing up those experiences can be very useful to tie yourself to that school and make it and make a real connection the important thing here in the update letter is to reiterate any connections you have to that school so if you talk to any medical students when you're asking them about the school and stuff like that you can bring that up and show and say I've heard so I've heard these things and I'm excited to be a student at your medical school for these reasons and tie it off there and finally I think it's very important to express gratitude in your admissions letter be very humble don't show any sign of entitlement or any expectation so if you don't say like oh I'll be sure to tell you more about this stuff in an interview say I am grateful for your consideration and I look forward to getting the opportunity to talk about this stuff in an interview so make sure to be polite respectful and courteous throughout your letter as well as in your other essays I think with this sort of guidance and some good experiences to talk about I think I think hopefully this letter will help your application and help you get an interview and help you get into Medical School so that's all the content that I have for today's video I hope it was useful for those of you who were considering writing an update letter and those of you who are applying to medical school I wish you the best of luck if you enjoyed this video feel free to leave a like down below or comment and if you want to see more videos like this or about my experiences in medical school that will be starting this fall make sure to subscribe alright thank you for watching and peace
