hello hello how are you great excellent I like when I log on and there's already people here cuz I'm like yes I'm not alone I think I think my brain is just done for the day oh I'm just tired you know yes hello Tanya I just interviewed her Sam I think I'm pronouncing that right maybe he did very well he was very lovely he will hopefully contract your mic to tell someone to shoosh oh I'll let me turn my microphone up I had it down it has been a long day I didn't I didn't even teach today I did I I have had 22 interviews today Wow that's a lot of learning mom and dad I'm tired of learning mom and dad have to mix it up or something I don't know so it's been a big day but I can't complain how many classes did you do today Gabriel 25 great yeah I started at 6:30 didn't finish till 7 great that is I am super impressed I am tired when you message me how much you've done I'm on the I'm on the road to make well over 6 K this month also I'm striving for that 7 so that I can take off all of next month just gonna take a month off I need it I've been working I know every time so every time we messaged every now and then it's kind of like how you just make me tired thank you so have you started classes on it I have a long time we even log in some either like Java working so much my skin was so full I think if I even add two more classes I think I was born no I understand okay and so 10 you did fine everyone's taught today not me feel like I'm lazy now yeah I know it's I think everyone is really really busy now especially with the the virus and everyone being stuck at home it's just everywhere that I've everywhere that I work with or know about they're all just completely back yes yeah definitely and it seems like it may be continuing for a little while because I don't know if you saw the announcement but I tutor groups also like given their platform so that teachers can teach the students from home so it sounds like it's something that's actually seeming like it's maybe set up to go for a while so we'll see tomorrow I want to know how your classes win because I haven't spoken to you since you've talked I know you have your mic off you can type it hello can you hear me yes I can how did your first classes go oh it was great my first class so something's happened on my computer and the page quint load and sorry I had a problem so alright like you're getting sick in my first class being captain really actually so it happened next day and was okay did you have kids or adults Oh adults more adults and I think six students Wow so well that's that's a really good start if your first class has six adults in it and you can start doing pretty well and a during another class six students and one kid slapped on my class so I couldn't wake it wake him up so it was really hard for me but yeah I've had that happen before I never believed that it happened until it did a kid falling asleep in my class I had this one little boy and I always taught him this was before the the regulations about kids taking classes later but he always took my classes like five years old and took my class at like 9:30 at night his time and for like four classes in a row he'd fall asleep around the 13 minute mark and I'm just like just kept teaching in hopes that maybe he would pick something up in his sleep just can't we I called him call him but now he slapped yeah these poor kids are so tired sometimes though like you kind of yeah Gabriel's like yeah they take so many classes yeah that usually their days are very very long so I'm not surprised that it happens but it does I just keep teaching I can ask them yes of course but no I'm glad you had your your first classes that's exciting Oh excellent okay so there was a there's not a key I don't have anything hugely prepared for tonight the idea was to talk about like doing feedback in progress reports and then kind of how to manage your time between classes and I know that you all can kind of help out with in telling me you know what you do in your feedback and and it'll even be good to hear from Gabriel - because Gabriel does a lot of his classes with another company so to actually be good to kind of get some different perspectives of how you can manage your feedback especially since he does crazy amounts of classes back to back so I'm sure he has some secret to getting feedback done quickly or else he'd be there for like 24 hours just doing feedback so feedback is different between the chromers ah yes yes yes that's a good one so yeah I'll talk about that one as well the students not being at the appropriate level so there are differences income between companies and feedback and those differences between how different teachers do feedback as well for example when I work with my other companies I tend to do longer feedback because it's kind of expected whereas with I tutor group it's not really an expectation that you do anything crazy so my feedback for our tutor group is like two maybe three sentences and it usually is so lovely to beat bow bell today it did very good at reading needs to work on pronouncing X word hope to see them again soon that's my feedback every time just something to that extent look I personalize it of course but I don't write very long but whereas other companies I might go a little bit more into depth Gabriel what do you write in your feedback cuz I know you do tons of back to back so what does your feedback look like yeah so a lot of there's a lot of so I kind of already know what it is that I'm gonna be working on so some of them I have templates that I use but one thing that I do use is I use voice attacks yeah so that's you know I'm trying to hear something else I'm allowing the computer to just type oh I'm saying and super-quick the same thing five sentences at the most you know it was nice to see me you know I use this reward they can work on this what to see him again soon that's it so I said compared to appreciate that you know a lot of parents are priced from my expectation my experience don't have a lot of they don't really know how to even speak English at times you know sometimes they might use like some kind of like translation software so you're trying to write the huge you know feedback coming back to the parents is going to translate horribly so five sentences how long they did what they need going too long and that's it and there's appreciate that yeah actually you've been waiting that way versus maybe writing something student super long based on kids will get lost in translation and get frustrated and that's out yeah no I do agree with that I think yeah a lot of times parents or even like if for add to adult students they don't want to read something that's super long it's really it needs to be I think to the point for the most part so yeah that's for both companies I do the same thing I have my little templates that I use and it works really really well but I love the idea actually a voice to text I didn't think about that one I have heard of people use me but I've never actually I worked at a charm because you could be doing other things and getting ready for the class and just talking like you don't make the material do all those great to meet James today be very low speaking in complete sentences you never need to work on the words about began and that's it period thank you very fast today I hope to see you again soon period again turn it up you know and you do that so continously you can be working on anything with the background and that means typing on that is pretty good actually I like that level of multitasking to speak while doing something else it's covered I need to yeah you don't want to waste those minutes on on feedback and I think everyone's kind of the same like you're doing law stretches it's even if you're just doing a few back-to-back can you typically want that few minutes to just and it's gotten crazy to the point where now you lose your head that I can be cocky while I go get something you know so I leave the computer just typing and I'll be talking while I'm getting stuff and then come back and there's a couple of minor pronunciation errors and fix that goes wrong what I said that's how I'm able to that's how I'm able to work 12 hours a day every day you know without all these feedbacks piling up on me and then at the end of the day I have like 15 students to do it I can't do that I'm gonna have to sleep no no that's I completely agree that I think that would be that would be impossible but I like I like the level of multitasking that you're actually in another room still doing your feedback I like that idea I like that you mentioned those looks I think that'll help people that take the voice to text is a really good idea for sure I didn't even think about that and one thing I did want to mention because I know I do this a lot with like my VIP kid feedback is I do a lot of copy and paste and with I tutor group it doesn't actually let you copy and paste so there is extension if you haven't heard of it it is not the most PC name but it's called don't with paste pardon the language but that is actually the name of it it's not just me making something up or trying to be rude but it is a good extension so if you do want to use like templates or something for feedback for all right so drew gripper for anything that doesn't let you copy and paste you can just download that extension to Chrome and it'll kind of override that same coffee and paste that's I learned that I'll put it in the chat as well so you can find it if you need to so that was something I actually learned from one of our teachers who uses like the one of the feedback programs like feedback Panda or yeah yeah so if you do use that or if you you know you decide to use it for I tutor it might help you as well or it might help you with other programs too so I learned about that what else a comment it's a really clever one actually save so much time if you can have a template and just paste it in rather than having to always okay so I do have two questions in the chat I'll cover them we all will cover them now okay so a big problem when students are not at the appropriate level I like having Gabriel here because I know you've taught a million classes so you can be like the go-to person I can ask all these things here to get other opinions okay Tanya wanted to women to talk about when students aren't really at the right level and I know with all of your classes you probably have had at least some regulars who may not quite be on level how do you kind of I guess move your lesson or you take the objective of the lesson and make sure that you cover that for the students right so legend Cavallari and then the lesson that you learn so then you dump it down so for whatever reason it's a level 10 for a group and not even at that level then you get a little seven think we'll there BAM learning seven friends then what I would do is that they're supposed to be reading the certain Benin's or a story I think the main idea that you know that story the main idea the definition running down having some you feel and then of course then you know in the chat box and schedule areas that this story is not the appropriate level please go ahead and change them it takes normally a couple of tries once we start seeing the food in the struggling they will change them but in the meantime you don't want the student to be there struggling you want them to take something positive away from you left well even if they learn four or five words maybe even learned it to stay one Spanish with you it's more just it's better than sitting there struggling with something that they don't want they'll just dumb it down make it make it a little easier you know it's some long sentences you know you stay them have them paired it back and I mean they'll take something away from that that's a lot better than them just struggling with the left and you trying to make them you're trying to adjust them to the lesson I just a lesson yes yes no I completely agree with that I think that's the that's the same across anywhere um if a student just you can't change the lesson material that you're given like if you're given a class like right then so you kind of have to adapt to that student so yeah particularly with with probably I tutor probably more than VIP kid is that you don't have to cover everything no one cares if you cover all the slides in a lesson or if you touch on everything on the slide or or whatever you can literally you know spend the class teaching the vocabulary if you really need to I mean ideally yes you do want to get through the lesson but you all you more so want to make sure that the student is getting something from it so you know if you spend an entire slide making sure the student is comfortable with four vocabulary words and that's what they leave with and they're happy you know making it fun for the students so that they're not overwhelmed I mean they're not in here to be overwhelmed and they're like oh I don't want to make that make the city comfortable make some small make you laugh make them have a good time you know that's how you boost up your ratings and yes 100 percent I'm just I love having you here let's you run me this is good you got to start staying up more often to come down and it's like your 13th hour of teacher I get to coach other teachers no I completely agree it is especially I mean especially with us student experience is I mean as you know it's all based on ratings like you like you just said so if the student is having a good class they're not gonna care exactly what you covered if they're happy and they feel like they've learned something I've laughed they've enjoyed class you're gonna get good ratings and gonna be a popular teacher like you said so I think that's yeah perfect okay so we talked about the being on the wrong side of the level what if they're above level what do you do I'm mostly asking I'm mostly asking you this is the other part of taneous question because you're just asking if they're not on the right level so they could technically be you know you could have a level if it's an advancement in which you get a lot especially in my other company where I want where it's a lot of funny there's a lot of miss placement in those funny classes where the students who we are at the very basic level because they want to come in the basic just the parents want them to cover the bases the students really already knows it so I challenge them so I elaborate on on my left so for example if I'm teaching a bonus class and I'm basically just teaching the bow teach and astound me what I'll do is I'll go ahead I know the student nobody knows it's clever and we'll go ahead and instead you don't send instructions and I'll go ahead and start you know creating sentences with the words having the student email with challenges in it okay so make a list available Cavallari is winter we're starting to eat I had one earlier today in Sweden there's a very advanced 13 yield he ain't covering a seven year old lesson and I have 18 slides to couple in 25 minutes and the students basically just throwing to them I had to teach from the for 25 minutes though but I go ahead and doing I'm seeing that the student already knows in this video although I didn't go back and say hey Carlos can you make a sentence with this word with the world Winston oh great okay so what is the temperature balloon because I know that they know all these advanced terms of loading challenge learn more right and then from there then they start asking open-ended questions so I know now that they have conversations and it's just being able to engage us in the moolah you know it's such baby word baby sentences you know but it's just more about the students practicing English that's the main reason why you're taking this course you know work on the pronunciation free talk is when the importance for a lot of these kids you know for the parents as well that's um you know why they're having to take classes so they can speak to a native English speaker right and practice so that's basically what I do is I basically just elaborate on the lesson you know also challenge them a lot of these kids they want to be challenged and you you'll start noticing with the more classes are teaching which students are capable of doing what and which are not so yeah you'll get some students that are very very advanced to the lesson extend it you know if there's nothing wrong with you know having to split in hey give me a sentence each one of these words and wow that was great so now you know what a compound is now we're gonna add like an but or you know and just again it goes quick you know but it's time to know if it's 25 minute lesson you know what you have only 12 slides to work with you expended wait yeah yeah no I like that actually I think that's a really good way to do it it's not just extending but even like making more challenges within your extensions as well so you know make sentences and they're quick at that make that even harder for them to get them to to practice more so I like that yeah that's a really good one exactly yeah and ten you said make conversations that's a really big one especially for adult classes with us that's how I extend every adult class because sometimes for adults it's a little bit harder I think to you know get them to make sense depending on the level to get them to make sentences but a lot of times I will talk about anything and everything with my adult students as well it could be like tangentially related to a lesson not really but I I will talk about everything so conversations are good too that's a good one Tonya I'm sound like both of those actually uh yeah any kind of extensions challenging them because ultimately they got the goal is that they are speaking with a native speaker or a fluent speaker rather so yeah I think that's important in both accounts I did notice you there sorry I'm like the class sizes that's totally surviving the storm up there are you in the storm we are in the middle of the storm now yeah it's not affecting the Internet thank goodness but is pretty bad not good at all I've heard lots of bits and pieces about it so I did I was wondering if any of my UK teachers we're gonna make it tonight yeah well my daughter's in Dublin she flew to Dublin yesterday and she's supposed to fly back tomorrow but all the flights are canceled today so I'm I don't expect us to get back tomorrow so don't know well it's probably yeah it's safer to not be in the air then it's fine it can just be so rather be delayed and on the ground and yeah exactly yeah very very good to see you and we're just we did talk a little bit about progress reports but now we're just kind of do some questions and tomorrow said when there's six students and they're noisy that was actually a pretty easy fix so if they're adults you can you know you can't ask them to be quiet tactfully but what I typically do is you can either turn off their microphone which can be problematic because I can just turn it back on or you can actually click on their microphone and just turn their volume all the way down okay and they can't adjust that so if you are in the classroom and you have your list of adults on the side there's a microphone if you you can actually just click put their volume all the way down so that will that will get rid of some of the noise and it's not really offensive to them because technically their microphones still on so as far as they know they're talking and everyone can hear them but if they do have a lot of background noise you don't want it to affect all the other students so that's probably the easiest way is just to kind of turn them up and down as you need to to kind of get them to participate or not since you are here Amanda what do you do feedback when you're leaving your feedback for your students will touch back on that really quick we're talking about ours earlier what do you do when you write your progress reports basically the same thing for most of them depends on the student obviously probably the the worst thing I've had to leave so far was about being oh I can't remember now it wasn't bad I didn't buy anything bad I just wrote the first thing I had to write something negative was about not oh yeah because not understanding what I was or being very slow to answer now when you've got two students and once really quick and the other one takes forever to answer and I was sitting there waiting and waiting it was quite difficult so I can't exactly remember what I wrote but I know they gave me that's particular stream gave me nine and said I spoke too fast but the other one in the class gave me attempts I don't I don't know well no it's not good yeah haven't touch word I haven't had anything below a nine yet but saying that I don't know how do you work that though if a student is so slow but the other ones really quick it's not fair on the other ones have to wait so long I find must be quite frustrating I think that one is a hard one actually because if it's a one-on-one class I don't care if there's well I'll just sit there wait well yeah exactly that's not a problem but when there's two it's it's quite a problem and they saw what this I guess this was a kids class or it wasn't adults class no kids but I don't know 14 13 14 years old you know I was I was just saying it might sound like maybe one was distracted with something I reckon that's what if it was a teenager I reckon they were probably doing something else maybe I don't know but that's quite difficult after I felt for the other one you know that would I think if that's the case really I think I would you try to give them the equal speaking opportunities I think I was like you have to do that still as well I guess for sure you did but probably make sure I use their name very yeah yeah yeah all the time I certainly know responses like oh for goodness sake you know and you could see the other ones that they're waiting like so I was like I'd be patient with it to an extent but if it was like really that slow where I'm sitting there waiting for an extended period of time I would just be like okay so yeah Amanda think about this if you don't answer after a little while okay tomorrow what do you think about this give the other one a chance to speak and then yeah maybe come back to the other one so maybe just alternate that will give them plenty of time to see who you two so the best time an issue but I mean if it is something like the kids over there like the teenagers over there on his phone then it's I couldn't see him doing anything but he's just you know it was the site yeah some of them seem to be quite different levels even if they classed as the same level they still seem to be very different in their abilities I think that happens a lot you do get even though we have a lot of levels and this happens I think again with any company or with anything you get students kind of on both ends of the level so you know you can have a level whatever that knows the bare minimum to be in that left hook like me bare minimum or maybe have just come that like fumbled their way through to that level and may not even have the ability to what would you write in a progress report or everyone for a student like that it's hard to what to write because you can't be too negative but you know you can't say it needs to hurry up I'm sure Gabriel's laughing I'm sure you had it before what do you put what do you put for like feedback like that language again so I put you know I mean I addressed what needs to be addressed right in the middle and then I cover it up I feel like it's beneficial to the student or the parent or if it's an adult so for them to really know hey you know because I feel like what a lot of times they do is they just point to where they get to a bunch of layers just not going to be able to just get pushed through you know and then that's just I feel like that will create a negative experience for that teacher that and it's not even that he just bought it so the previous teachers that have just been pushing the men in beginning yeah what I usually do is I'll tell them you know right and especially when it's my older students hey you know what I need to work on this you know focus on meeting either the addition of courses they can say or I'll message you know there's no my other company we have to learn which is but because of them place them in the loan and I'll be every class messaging you know after a certain amount of time they usually get it and they'll move them around yeah so yeah I mean but I guess if that would be the same thing here with a student really is struggling I noticed on feedbacks that a the student struggling block you know Connie hello I would recommend this level for you because any more beneficial you build upon this list but what he did when he did upset he answer he was good but you know it was just waiting for him to start it's like have you heard me say your name okay but yeah I know some of them are pushed sure I've had that in school where kids are just pushed through because his good looks good for the boss anyway you don't really know if the kid is actually struggling like with comprehension or with sentence formation or things like that or whether they're just distracted and you can't see it or they just don't click with the instructor I mean that's like then it's not you know where they get all insulting it's kind of hard for them to find a certain style that you like how many answer another one companies when they can you know keep the same teacher over and over he loved that really here they might they might like the previous teacher if they had oh yeah we simplified for me they really know how to level up level for them and then they get another teacher that just finally isn't like that and a different accent as well because British if they've only had American teachers yeah yeah teachers stars as well yeah so okay there was something else I was going to ask me I can't remember now that's actually really good finally about the accents I think that that is a bit of a challenge for some students too because we do have I think yeah well it's really good on one hand because I think it is important for students to know or be able to recognize more than one accent because they're not always gonna hear one type so I think it is quite good that they hear loss but it can be really hard for certain levels I think if they're hearing you know far better than a week I had a problem with a lesson the other day and to ask on Facebook about idioms because I absolutely no idea what these idioms where I was like why do see that somebody somebody else had already answered you but I saw them why do you have trouble I know what all those are what are you talking yeah they're not used here they ought to do with American games I think don't they yeah I think they were I can't remember all the ones you want wrote word but I looked through them I'm like what those are easy what do you have yeah exactly I know I do and say it's a very good have learned that as well because I get um like adult students asking me like what does this idiom mean and it's usually like a UK one and I'm like no I did well there you go so to do it like baseball idioms thing like that American football and I so I have no idea what these are never heard of them they must be American because I'd know that if it was British so yeah yeah that's a lot of the lessons majority of the lessons are all written in American English or some actually that I've seen that have more of the like British Spelling's or things like that one British spelling because I do get quite irritated for the American spelling I'm sorry sorry for your parents but it's like should be you in there you should see how I go now my typing is off because I grew up in the US but I've lived in Australia so somewhere in the spell some words that smell differently I have that program okay um because every time I spell something on Campbell a light in the chat box it comes up with a red line underneath now go why is that wrong why is that wrong and then I really underline anything I write in English the question you said you had another question yeah no I I think you did bring up a good point though about the the negative feedback so my other question and this is curious is more of a poll here I guess how honest are you in feedback like on a scale of one to ten what what being dishonest what one one being one being like sugarcoat everything like this is a wonderful student even if they were a little probably odd for me about four yeah I mean so I if there's something wrong with but I try to keep most of money most of my feedback is very positive but again because in my other company we work out three bookings from the parents I like some books for you so I have to be very impossible you know what I mean I do try to address issues that are serious issues on especially when it comes to like I said pronunciation I'm gonna be there I mean I would go I think most people yet now uh tenure now I'm very honest I wasn't in the beginning I like that everyone has a different approach to this so some people are like completely on the end of you know everything has to be positive on the other end it's everything has to be super honest so what do you do Kenny it depends on the company in the day usually usually I'm kind of I'm kind of where you and Gabriel are I think I try to be more positive than not if something is really wrong like something like I will tell them you know they need to work on something because that's just how I write my feedback anyway but I did I am I tend to be nicer especially to the kids I think in all of my teaching all of my classes I've given four stars like twice and it was to the same kid and he was being an absolute little terror and he fully deserved less than that but I was very nice but in the feedback for that for that one instance I was but I was brutally honest cuz I was I was over my limit of patience which is very high I am the most patient person in the world but I was over it he was playing a video game I mean to the point that I could hear the music the computer so I knew exactly what is excited could even recognize the music I'm like you're playing a video game this was like a 10 year old very like fairly lower level and he would pair at me from time to time and that was that always good and I was just getting so like like I would just sit there and just wait until he finally realized that the teacher stopped talking so I was brutally honest and that feedback and it worked because mom was there next week and I was like but for the most part I'm kind of on the same end as you guys I will I'm usually super positive but if something's are all about kind of sandwich and in-between some nice things and let them know that something needs to be worked on but I think both approaches are fine I mean probably without that something else was the star thing you just mentioned now it says if I've got a 16 year old and it comes up mandatory it's mighty clear to you stars I'm like so I just have a joke with them and go you like stars you're never too old for stars you know I tried I did that too yeah if I have teenagers especially like I've taught some level 11 level 12s Mary Gibbs just as good as mine I'm like yes we got stars we're doing also like something silly or sometimes if I don't even give them throughout the listen you know be like yes you got 5 stars I still make sure that they get them they just don't necessarily get if it's mandatory I think yeah it's a shame really because it could be a choice when they're old yeah they just laugh at me when I say you're never too old for stars and they just laugh they think it's funny sir yeah why did the same thing like with the adult classes do you have like the little applause things and the little things like that I do those and they have a good laugh when I'm like being a bit silly with them so I think they enjoying it too but about having a bit of fun oh there was one more thing oh I heard the sound of message oh the sound of messages that a kid would check yeah I had that as well where I hear the little like they may listen to the lesson sometimes you can't really say much about that I mean I do try I'll ask them what they're doing and sometimes extend in that way like if I know that they're doing something oh yeah that's what I was going to say I want to take up all the time but the other boy had the other day I had a boy he was about 14 and the lesson was about music and he just said I don't like music and sat there like okay do your parents like music no no they don't like music okay so I was like so then I had to change the subject to talk about what he does like doing because it was just impossible to do the lesson he was not interested whatsoever he just said I'm not interested I don't like music and that was it so what do you like doing them I like playing video games okay I don't know much about video again so tell me about I think that's a brilliant approach I mean I've had yeah I think I've said before I've had lessons where it's completely irrelevant to the student and something else like you can talk about anything for 25 or 45 minutes really you really just have to practice your your biessing to me yeah exactly so yeah you will get that sometimes I mean cuz these especially for i22 group probably more although with VIP kid-free talk I've had that as well where some of those free talk lessons are oh yeah so yeah you do have to kind of adapt as best you can to your student we will get cut off in a few seconds so thank you everybody for coming before we do get cut off but yes so yeah you have to adapt sometimes I say if the lesson doesn't fit I just don't even they're not gonna appreciate it if you try to follow it so okay I'll say Popeye anyway okay yes it's gonna end very shortly I'm so glad you all came and Gabriel I'm now ordering you to come to all of them you're like no I'm sleeping well when you have your month off you have no excuse oh yeah are we here
