hey guys so today I'm going to be making a video all about sorority recruitment prepping for the week of and all that goes into that cuz I know a lot of people are getting except together right now and it's super stressful but it doesn't need to be I promise so this video is gonna be all about like prepping for recruitment and then I'm gonna have another video closer to the actual week of recruitment if it happens more about like the actual process itself but there's obviously a lot that goes into the week before you actually get to school so we're gonna be talking about all of that stuff today so like I said I know that recruitment this year is kind of up in the air but I'm sure that y'all probably still wanna prep as if it's going to happen or maybe you're watching this in a future year and you have no idea what I'm talking about but I'm just gonna go over stuff that I did last year to prepare for a recruitment as if it was like a normal year so something I do want to say is that I do attend the University of Texas at Austin so when I'm talking about this stuff I can really only speak for that specific recruitment process every school is going to be different UT in particular it can be classified as a bit more intense I guess than some other schools it's definitely you know kind of your typical like southern recruitment if you're going to school somewhere else it might be more relaxed and some of the things that I say may not apply as much so definitely like take everything I'm saying with a grain of salt and you know do your research for your particular school but I would say most of this stuff is pretty generic another thing I want to say is that with all the information I'm saying make sure you're checking it with your school's panel Inuk website that's gonna be your best friend on there it should have a guide for the year of like what each round will be like what you're expected to wear probably more information on reckless like the specific dates of everything and all of that stuff so make sure you're looking at your own school's website so that you can make sure you're getting accurate stuff that is pertaining to you all right so now let's get into the things that y'all actually want to know so I'm gonna start with recommendation letters this is something that can vary from school to school at most schools I think they want you to try and have a letter for every house but obviously like I said this can vary from school to school I know specifically in California it's not like that like you don't really need letters of recommendation by a lot of southern schools they want you to try and have a letter of recommendation for every sorority that you will be like rushing through so like all the panel Inuk ones this is not something to stress out about I know a lot of people freaked out about it and get super stressed about it specifically like if you don't know a lot of women that were in sororities but it's it doesn't need to be stressful you don't need to freak out about it so don't worry about it let me just that's the first thing don't stress you'll be fine honestly none of the stuff I'm talking about today needs to be stressful like it doesn't need to be a big to-do or a big thing like just get it done and don't worry about it move on there are bigger things in life and once you go through recruitment you'll be like wow I spent so much time on things that we're just not relevant so just don't stress about it so when it comes to finding people to write you letters of recommendation obviously starting with like your friends and family first is always gonna be like your best bet because they know you the best so they can write like the most detailed letters of recommendation for you so your mom's friends or your aunts and uncles like all of those people check with them first to see if they were in anything but if you don't have a lot of Greek affiliates in your family it's not a big deal at all like that shouldn't it's not gonna hurt your chances or anything like it's just that they can write you a more detailed rap it's something I do want to say about recommendation letters is it's not like a college recommendation letter where it's like I'm just like writing an essay all about you like there are specific things that they fell out most of it is pulled from your resume and then like from what other people say about you and things so it's not like you don't need to know you super duper well to write you one like some of the women that wrote me some I had only met like once or twice so don't worry about that other places to find people to write you letters of recommendation if you can't find any just from talking to like your friends and family I mean talk to your friends moms and things like that too um I think it's always good to put together a list just for like your friends we did that for my drill team which was really helpful like all the moms of the girls that were on our dance team put like if they were in a certain sorority and like what school they went to and then we could like reach out to them from there that was really helpful I was also a national charity league and we had a list for that as well so if you're in an organization maybe ask if there is an existing list or if there's not like pulling together because I guarantee you that other people will probably need the information as well if you're on like a sports team or in some sort of club or something maybe just ask around to the people in that group and see if their mom's we're in anything and then you can put together a list and reach out to them according to which chapter everyone's in so and then the last way that I would say to find people actually not the last way but one of the last ways to find people is for a lot of cities there is a panel Inuk council I know my mom was on at my senior year so it's basically just a group of women who their main goal is to get that like their region more represented and sororities you can do some research and see if there is one for your area and that's literally like their whole purpose is basically to write recommendation letters for girls and to get them into sororities and get like they're like I said area more represented in the schools and the chapters so you can do your research and then just like they should have a list of the women that are involved in their organization and what chapter they were involved in and then like their email and you can just email them and I be like hi like my name is such-and-such and I'm going to recruitment would you write me a recommendation letter for this school I'm gonna read y'all what I sent out in a minute but that is another good way to find like a lot of women in one spot and then the last way that I actually like I didn't do this but I've seen it recently and I thought that was a really good idea is through different Facebook groups I'm in a few four different podcasts so like gals on the go I've seen a few and then like manifest for Tori DeSimone and girls are just writing in they're like hey this is the school I'm going to anyone willing to write me erectors that I don't have people for already and so many people are totally willing to write you then I'm like don't think that people are gonna shoot you down because most of the time they won't they want you to be a part of their chapter cuz like everyone wants like people to want to be in their chapter if that makes sense so most people I would say are pretty Watling to write your recommendation letters and those types of groups are pretty big obviously there are other ones too so maybe just like put it out into the you know the platforms and just see if there are people for the chapters that you still need people for okay I realize that I like did not really explain recommendation letters very well and I just kind of hopped into finding them so just in case you are totally new to recruitment and you don't know what I'm talking about let me explain basically letters of recommendation are just ways for the sorority to get a better sense of you because going into it like obviously they can only see you from your resume so having someone from their organization like fill out a form about you can kind of give them a better idea of like who you are as a more well-rounded person so the forms look different for everyone but pretty much it's like you know more to do with like character qualities they do and put your GPA I believe and possibly your rank so like information that would be on your resume and just like some general things about you I think a little paragraph - I've never written one but I think there's like a little blurb it's not like super detailed like I said so don't worry if they like don't know every single aspect of you but it's just to kind of give a more well-rounded representation of who you are before you actually go into the week of recruitment to help just like with which girls are gonna get paired to talk to when like you know interests things like that like it can just help kind of better prepare the girls and that sorority - or the for when you come through recruitment if that makes sense so basically you just give the alum information about you and then they can take care of it from there like you don't need to worry about giving them any forms or anything like that like they know how to do it through their own respective chapters website okay so now I'm going to read you what I sent out to the women that I asked for letters of rec again like how many you have for each sorority and if you need one for each sorority is dependent on the school so definitely do your research for your particular school I believe for UT they did want us to try and have one for every chapter and I think there's 13 or 14 houses that we went through formal recruitment floor which sounds like a lot but I promise it's totally doable there were some houses that I had multiple letters for it's totally necessary but if you have like multiple people that want to write you recs like they're not gonna look down upon you but don't like try and get like four for each house cuz it's so not necessary and some houses I know will only look at like one or two just because there are so many girls going through recruitment they can't read like four letters for every single girls so just I would say try and get one per house and try and ask people like if you have three people that were in the same sorority but one of them like you've known your whole life and that one of them is just like an acquaintance's mom maybe ask the one that knows you better to write your one um because like I said it is to give the sorority more insight onto who you are as a person so obviously the better the alum knows you the more insight they were probably able to get it from okay like I said now I'm just gonna read you what I sent I texted people that I had their numbers and then I emailed people who I didn't have their numbers so it doesn't need to be like a long thing but definitely ask the alum don't just assume like oh you're in the sorority I'm just gonna drop off my packet because that happened to my mom a few times through national charity league where like her name was just on the list and girls would just like drop off their stuff assuming that my mom would read them Iraq but you don't ever want us soon cuz that's just kind of rude like they're taking their time out of their lives to write this for you so you should ask so what I put was hello miss whoever as you know I'm going to the University of Texas at Austin next year and plan to go through recruitment I was wondering if you would be willing to write my sorority recommendation for and then I put whatever story they were in thank you so much for considering and then I put a hook um Ryan McCoy you could pull whatever saying you wanted to this alum went to UT so that's why I said hook up but obviously if I was asking like an Aggie or something I just put like thanks or sincerely whatever so that's what I put two the alums I think that that's a pretty good little blurb you know keeping it short and sweet to the point but you're still being respectful and asking because it's just rude to assume like they just don't do that that's not nice not nice up my feet we're going to sleep because I've been sitting on them sorry I just shrunk a few and she's put I could not sit on my feet anymore so now I'm gonna go over what my folder looked like it's not necessary to do folders because most chapters want their rec letters all online in the past people would like send in hard copies of their resumes and pictures and things but now that's not really thing everything's online but some alums do prefer a hard copy so I made hard copies but like I said it's totally not necessary but um for visual purposes I thought it would be helpful to show you what I did so basically I just got these navy folders and then I just put my initials on the front so that I knew it was mine and then inside or in your email whatever you're attaching you want to put in three pictures of yourself because they do have to submit photos of you basically I just put mine in this little like page protector and then on the back of them I put little labels with my name and my high school so that they could like keep track of them but obviously if you're doing it through an email that's not necessary but basically you want to have one of kind of like every shot of you or like distance that makes sense so you want a close-up a three-quarter length and then a full-body shot so I don't know if you can really see those but it's not really relevant but so those are the you want to show like a variety of you in different poses and try and also make sure that your pictures like look like you or look like what your going to look like during recruitment because they study these pictures like the notthey alums that would be with the girls in the sororities study these pictures so that they can recognize you when you're coming into the house so if you my mom was mad at me because I ended up having longer hair than I did obviously these pictures like my hair is pretty short or like if you get your senior pictures done when your hair is blonde and then you send in those pictures but you show up as like a brunette or like a redhead or something like it kind of defeats the purpose of the pictures so if you don't look like how you look and your senior pictures maybe like take some new pictures they don't have to be like super glamour shots like try and make them decent quality but they don't have to be like from a professional photographer if that makes sense like if you have you know pretty decent camera you and God and your mom just snap some shots of you you know that'll be that'll be good good so yeah those are the pictures like I said I feel like I'm all over the place in this I'm sorry let me reset her so once you figure out the BLM is going to write you a letter of recommendation you can depending on what they want if they want a hard copy or if they want you to do it all electronically you can either put together a little fuller drop it off at their house or you can just email them the attachments of all these documents so obviously like I said for pictures if you're just doing an emailing you would just include them as attachments and the email super simple don't need to do anything crazy with that then you want to include I actually don't have one in here but I did a little cover letter so I just put like hi my name is Ryan McCoy then basically just like kind of wrote a little bit about me like my goals in life like what are some things that you like to do for fun just kind of giving like things that you wouldn't necessarily just get from your resume just more of a more holistic snapshot of you because some of these women may not know you as well so you want to you know give them a little more insight into your personality so put that in and then you know obviously like thank you so much for doing this for me you sign your name okay and then you want to include your resume so for mine I just added in like I'm gonna actually on my address but I just I didn't like this little cute top part and then you want to put your address your email and then I think for school stuff you want to put in we're going to school what your rank was your GPA and your a CT or SAT score you want those because I think they have to put those in there as well make sure you have all the relevant education stuff I feel like it's pretty basic resume stuff that you would probably have on your resume already but just make sure that that is on there so next you want to have awards and honors like anything if you've made an honor roll or a B honor roll or you've got like an award for a team you're on or in a club you're in you know whatever put those on there with your grade I mean this is honestly basically just like any normal resume except at the end so then you want to put your extracurricular activities anything you're in with the blurb any leadership positions you are in make sure you highlight that again just like a normal resume and then you can put your work experience I didn't have any work experience going into the recruitment process so I didn't have anything on there but if you did have a job you could put that on there as well and then the only thing that makes this different from a normal resume is that you will put your family Greek affiliations if you have any if you don't don't worry about it I had a few so you just put your relation to the person what their name was make sure you're including maiden names if it's like your mom your grandma whoever so the thing like what name they would have gone by when they were a part of the sorority if that makes sense like my mom's name wasn't Tracey McCoy when she was in a sorority she wasn't married yet so that make sense so make sure you're putting their maiden as well and then obviously like what sorority they're in and what school they went to so I feel like I'm overwhelming you guys don't stress I'm gonna hopefully like put down a breakdown right here to make it all a little bit simpler but seriously don't worry about it it's not a big deal last thing you want to include your transcript again all of this can be digitally linked into an email if you are just emailing with the alum or you can just print off the documents and drop them off at their house stuff quick little summary I noticed was probably so overwhelming things you need for your recommendation letters three pictures I closed up a three quarter length and a full body your cover letter just giving a little blurb about you and morons to your personality thank you for writing your rack etc your resume same as a job application resume would be except you can put your family group affiliations if you have any and then the last thing is your transcript so that is all of that I'm sorry that was so overwhelming but don't be overwhelmed it's just cuz I'm scatterbrained stuff that is that like I said let me just reiterate most chapters want electronic copies so you can literally just attach them to or in an email and then send it to the alum does not have to be a big thing so that is that once the alums write your letters of recommendation or like you've just wait a week or so after sending them your stuff definitely I would recommend writing them a thank-you card I think mailing it and like having a tangible card is always nice but I mean you could email to if you need to or like don't have their address or something but definitely saying thank you after you send them your stuff is really really important because you want to put your best foot forward and you know you want them to write a good recommendation letter for you it's also good if they like maybe I forgot that they agreed to write you one and then they get a thank-you card and like oh shoot I need to do that and she was super nice cuz she wrote me to thank-you cards so send thank-you cards it's important it's polite you want to come off play obviously cuz y'all are all very nice people so make sure that the alums know that alright so that was all for wreck letters I know that that was a lot I know that was overwhelming but it does not need to be it does not need to me overwhelming at all so don't stress okay and I think I'm just gonna end up making a few separate videos because I'm realizing that it's just a lot to talk about and I don't want to overwhelm you guys like a 40 minute long video trying to get everything in so I'm just gonna separate it out and then you can watch like what you feel like you are nervous about or want to get some advice on so that was everything read clutter related again I say do not stress don't worry honestly if you need help like reach out to me I can help you try and come up with some ways to find people it really doesn't mean to me a huge deal and if you don't have a letter for a house don't freak out it will be fine everything will be good I promise that is how like you put together your information and like the things that you really need to include for the letter so I hope this is helpful I hope I didn't stress you guys out too much if you have any questions leave them down below and I will be sure to get back to you um and yeah good luck with your prepping for recruitment so I'll see you guys later bye
