hey guys it's cecile welcome back to my youtube channel for those of you guys who don't know me i'm a freshman at brown university double majoring in biology and history as a pre-med but right now brown actually like postponed freshman enrollment so i start my first semester in january so right now i am at home please ignore the columbia sweatshirt it's my sister's and it's just really cute and they have better colors than roundup so that's why i wear it so anyways i basically made this chance to share with you guys the advice i wish i'd known when i was in high school applying to scholarships college and also balancing everything else i did in high school so that sounds interesting to you subscribe down below give this video a like and hit that bell if you want to get notified every time i post new content anyways remember that time i said i was gonna post like every single monday well um it has turned into every other monday or basically like whenever i have a video that i actually want to post i will post on a monday however half the time i get lazy slash busy slash tired i don't actually post on monday so don't expect that i mean anymore i'm sorry to let you guys down but like especially when i'm on campus and i get busy and don't have time to actually make videos a lot but i'm going to try my best so today i'm going to be talking about the best summer programs for high schoolers but before i do any of that i have to give a disclaimer so personally i don't think summer like college programs or any of this pre-college stuff actually matter in the admissions process except for the first couple which i'm going to mention because those actually have been said to actually matter in your admissions process but overall if you could show that this summer camp or pre-college program whatever you did had an influence on you or led you to interact more with a field of study that you really are passionate about i think that can like have a lot of leverage in your app if you use it the right way i'm just saying that the presence of these programs by themselves in your activity section probably won't matter so yeah let's just get right into it the first program i'm going to mention that actually like apparently matters because it's like super duper selective is the rsi program or the research science institute so this mit science and engineering program is completely free for the students who are selected to actually attend it and it combines like on-campus coursework with off-campus research yeah just to show how competitive this program actually is to get into apparently every single year over 1 600 applicants apply for the admission cycle and about 80 of them are actually chosen to participate the admissions are basically based off of your accomplishments and academics like just because you're a legacy or you know someone in the program apparently that doesn't matter based on the information on their website but basically for this program you're participating in the research from start to finish so that's why it's super influential in your application because number one hands-on research experience which you could also get in like a lab or something if you don't get into this program but like this is a cool way to do it at mit and then number two it's a free program and it's super selective to get into so you don't have like some sort of privilege for attending this program based on like you being able to afford it like there are for other programs because there are summer programs that like don't offer as much financial aid where the people who actually participate in those programs are the ones who can afford it and in that case it doesn't really help because basically you're paying to get in and you're paying for an opportunity that not everyone can have but this one's free to everyone and that means that like the level is basically balanced so everyone has a shot to get in and it is influential and another academic enrichment program that mit has that's super similar to the rsi one is the mites program and that's basically standing for the minority introduction into engineering and science and this program is also completely free to attend this mites program is less of the actual research component more of you like actually taking like stem-based classes though but anyways either way both of those mit programs have actually been like said by multiple admissions officers to have an impact on your application so those are definitely ones that you should apply for and even though they probably won't be in person this year i'm pretty sure the mice one like actually announced like fully for sure they will not be in person you should still apply because even if you're going like online it's completely free and you still get the experience and to put it on your academic resume for your application to college another free summer program i want to actually highlight is the task program and taps stands for teleride association summer program super fitting for the name and basically it's a six week free educational course to basically like enrich low-income students and so they bring in a bunch of lectures you participate in a bunch of seminars and discussions it's more of that kind of program but it's free and it's mostly open for fgli students in the last free summer program i actually wanted to highlight for you guys are the notre dame leadership seminars and for this it's like a 10-day free enrichment program on notre dame's campus and basically you participate in a bunch of different seminars and they choose applicants based on their leadership history and there are seminars based on like the environment and politics and the issue of race there's a ton of different stuff available but that's definitely a great opportunity to look at as well but before i move on to mentioning the paid summer programs that are available out there for you guys i just want to take this time to highlight this amazing company called career 2. yeah since i'm taking the time to mention all these summer programs most of which are stem heavy i thought i would take the time to actually talk about one of the coding challenges that career 2 offers that i think you guys will be interested in because it's completely free and completely useful in today's world so i've actually always wanted to learn coding mostly because it's super useful in today's world like whether you're in business or marketing or computer science or whatever it is and but i actually never had the time and i didn't want to pay for a lesson but since joining this python challenge i've actually learned a lot and it's been super fun along the way so i definitely recommend you guys actually do it and it's something you can put on your resume as a skill or just like to have in your mind as new knowledge so definitely check that out and i have the link in my description and down below in the comments now that we're done with the free program and that little ad right there i'm gonna move into the paid programs in which there are two different types there are the paid programs in the summer where you actually get course credits and the ones where you do not so like the summer programs where you get course credits these are like ones at harvard columbia stanford washu there are a ton out there you basically pay to attend this program for a certain amount of time set by the university and you can take classes that the university actually offers by their professors and stuff and you will get college credit for it so i think that's what makes these programs so special because in addition to that like pre-college experience you get like of actually being on campus and like being like a student basically you also get course credit for everything you do within your time there however there are also summer programs where you do not get course credit like the one at brown yale and u-pen and a lot of other schools but the thing is even though you're not getting course credit the thing is like you're only there for a small period of time so like one two three weeks so there's not really time for you to actually take a course and instead of taking a course you engage in like research tours seminars discussions lectures like you still get that college experience but you're not actually like under the stress of taking a college class and actually having to engage with the curriculum because you're getting a grade for this like i'm sure some of you guys know this but i went to the yygs program at yale young global scholars and although it was like one of those programs where you don't get course credit or anything i absolutely loved it i met so many great people there and the people that i actually met there are people that helped me through the entire college process we went through it together and i'm still friends with them to this day additionally i got a great view of the campus i got a great idea of what it was like to actually be a student at a college campus and it honestly opened my eyes up to the ivy league in general because at the time like i was just a small girl from ohio and like not to be basic but i genuinely did not think i was going to be able to leave this state because i didn't think that there was financial aid at these institutions in the ivy league and i didn't think that i was going to have the capabilities to actually get in but yygs showed me that i did have the capability to get in and there were so many other students just like me who were applying to these top schools like even just for the heck of it and so this really inspired me to go out of my comfort zone apply to a couple ivy leagues and to honestly get me where i am right now and i know that this is just not the doing of yygs itself but rather the people there and the joy savvy foundation that sponsored my trip there but like in general like it completely changed my mindset on college and so i can't be more thankful for that also a little plug i posted a yygs vlog and my ygs speaker series speech if you want to check those out on my channel and also the yellow and global scholars official youtube published my vlog since i was part of their media team so if you want to check that out you can too also please please please do not get discouraged from attending these paid programs if you look at the price and you're just like wow i can't afford that because i know it's really pricey but number one these institutions have a lot of financial aid set aside specifically for these programs to make sure that people are able to attend if they cannot afford it like for your gsc i'll cover half of my tuition like upfront just like that additionally there are lots of outside scholarships you can use to actually like apply towards these programs and i'm going to name two right now so the very first one is the quest bridge college prep scholars program and this one goes for students who like have the household income of less than 65 000 i believe but you can still apply if you're over that just really depends on who's there and who's applying and that depends on if you're going to get it but yeah this covers everything associated with the program so you go for free and then the scholarship that i mentioned that i actually got was the joyce ivey foundation scholarship and this is for women living in the midwest so if that applies to you you can go on the joyce i foundation's website and you can apply for the scholarship and they actually covered the other half of my yygs fees so essentially i did go for free but like i still paid for like my meals like outside of the dining hall and then like my flight and stuff like that but overall these scholarships do exist and they do help and i do suggest you look at them and they don't have to be like any specific scholarship either if you like work a job you earn money there you can apply it towards the summer program if you just win a scholarship and the chat goes directly to you apply it towards the summer program i think it's worth it in some situations like obviously if you don't get a lot of financial aid and you're still paying like seven thousand dollars to go for like a week like don't do it but if it's like within a range that you can actually afford and you feel comfortable going i definitely recommend it because i do think that the program changed my perspective and it might change yours but if you don't get into these summer programs or you can't afford to attend or whatever it is do not stress out because you can still use your summer to do something beneficial for your college app whether it's volunteering for your community for a cause that you're actually passionate about starting a startup or a non-profit that you are actually going to be working on like throughout high school instead of just like starting it right before college apps and like dropping it like don't do that or even researching you can do a lot of different things in your summer and as long as you make an impact in something that you're passionate about and something that you can speak about in your college apps i think it's fine and i think you're doing great so do not worry about these programs if you cannot afford to attend or if you don't get in so yeah i think that's the end of this video and as always thank you guys so much for watching if you actually made it this far and if you have any questions you can feel free to contact me on instagram dm because i prefer that to email because half the time my email is flooded but anyways thank you so much for supporting my channel love you all and i hope this video helped you guys
