[Music] in 2019 have the education lab through a grant given by the japan foundation worked with senior high school teachers in developing a tool to raise awareness and social involvement of senior high students in disaster risk reduction in climate change adaptation and environmental protection and conservation they followed a co-design process that led to handang heroes a learning toolkit designed to help teachers and educators reinforce concepts in disaster risk reduction in climate change adaptation the toolkit is composed of games and activities that can be used to teach skills and content in a more fun and engaging way this is what design can do by treating stakeholders as subject matter experts of their own contexts and problems the human-centered design process facilitates an inclusive and collaborative approach to addressing social concerns the human-centered approach or to others design thinking is a creative problem-solving process that is grounded in empathy and experimentation yes it has become a buzzword but this process when conducted meaningfully allows us to look at old issues through a fresh perspective and that is through the lens of those who are most affected different organizations and institutions use different frameworks to articulate basically these faces or activities we frame the problem we engage with stakeholders we synthesize findings we brainstorm prototype we test and iterate the process is not always linear but the pattern is what is most constant as you can see in the diagram it's a series of converging and diverging phases where information stories narratives and contexts are synthesized in preparation for a more generative next phase let's break this down even further in the framing research phase the problem is defined by conducting desk research analyzing existing data and searching for existing similar or tangential intervention in the process of undone heroes they reviewed existing drr materials and the curriculum of debit to understand what information or efforts are currently being done and figure out where the existing gaps are once this is done and the problem is well scoped the team moves on to the empathy phase in the empathy phase we understand the culture and context of the people involved we talk to them we observe them we listen and immerse in their environments this is not always an easy task this requires that we leave our biases behind and engage with them subject matter experts of their own concerns following our case study for habi this entailed engaging with senior high school teachers in a series of interviews to see where the pain points and priorities are not just in teaching the art courses or concepts but also in teaching in general in engaging with their students they arrived at several insights through the synthesis phase in this part of the process observations and research findings are consolidated to arrive at the final design challenge i find this part of the process the most difficult because we are asked to decide which part of the pie do we specifically take a bite on mahirapito this is an important turning point and it is crucial that we continue engaging with our stakeholders in the synthesis phase because they should be able to decide the course of our next actions and then we move on to the more traditional design part in the ideation phase we take the final design challenge and invite our stakeholders back for some brainstorming sessions this is fun because in this part of the process not only do we encourage people to think big and crazy we also challenge ourselves not to be too concerned and limited by the current resources in our setup this is the most generative phase because all ideas are welcome for happy they made this process more nuanced by inviting first-year students from the ut college of education to take part in the process because of their field of study and their previous experience of learning drr concepts as high school students the ideas from this part of the process are then converted into physical products in the prototype phase ideas are developed into tactile objects or experiences so people can see how this potentially can exist in space everyone who participated in the brainstorm session is invited to develop low fidelity prototypes for their best ideas ask people to engage with these and then gather feedback if you will notice majority of the decision making in the human center design process is human centered it's collaborative it's democratized everyone is encouraged to say their peace what works what doesn't especially by carrying the perspectives that they do the intervention in the process will only succeed if it opens itself to feedback earlier on in the process the prototype that resonates most with the stakeholders are continuously developed tested and iterated for habi this entailed going beyond the teachers and the up students they had initially engaged with they conducted testing sessions with feu senior high students to see if the concept and the mechanics of the games and activities would work after a series of sessions they ended with handung heroes as of today they are still gearing up for printing and distribution but as you can see handong heroes is a product of collaboration and constant feedback and iteration if you will notice the process isn't necessarily that mind-blowing to some collaborative approach is expected and almost common sensical this is what makes the process more viable and organic the process can be used for many things like building specific products for commerce for proposing new service delivery system and even for targeted marketing but hcd human centered design is maximized when it is used beyond the cool the way the center for social design at the maryland institute college of art has articulated the process is a personal favorite it intentionally places the process in the middle of social issues and positive social change in this way we leverage the motivations and challenges of the affected population to create a shift in behavior we do this not by imposing something we think will work or we think is right but by facilitating the development of design interventions that the stakeholders will create for themselves this requires that designers act more as facilitators of conversation the task is to prompt inquiry and encourage exploration of possibilities as opposed to how we typically view designers as builders of products and concepts so going back to the example of habi and young heroes showed key concepts as to why hcd could work first because there was a synergy within the stakeholders the team was composed of teachers designers students and project managers it was a transdisciplinary team that welcomed all perspectives leveraged technical expertise and grounded these in real life experiences and everyone was treated equally everyone was working to achieve the same goal which is to reinforce concepts in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation the strength of this process as seen through our case study is on how design and designers drove the if not expected i like to think of this as a systematized chaos design communicates play and the idea of play even in the context of a problem-solving scenario is a sum of the anxiety of getting things right the first time this makes failure transform from dead ends to opportunities of growth and the shift in perspective allows us to iterate faster before we execute fully in context and the third and probably the most important ingredient of the human center design process is on how it redistributes power over decision making it's not just about empowering people it's about co-building power with those who are most affected by an issue by opening up opportunities for them to address their own concerns we have to admit this is not an option for many all the time the challenge really is reimagining how the table looks like and who gets to have a seat again the hid process provides space for the nuances of the experience of every person because empathy is at the core of this process hcd challenges us to listen and find something in us that resonates with others truth handung heroes showed us how a school curriculum can transform into an engaging toolkit through the hed process imagine what this could mean in the programs policies and innovations done on a much broader scale through the human center design process affected stakeholders are not only considered sources of information for an initial part of the research nor are they treated solely as beneficiaries of a service they are invited to join the team that actually tries to address the issues they have defined for themselves the process can be quick or not it can go from two weeks to three years but sustaining the engagement is necessary how much time and resources will we save if we actually ask people what they need and invite them along with other field experts to be part of the team that addresses their concerns the task really is to design with and not just for people by combining data with empathy we are able to truly understand the barriers and motivations of those who are most affected in this manner we see that not because some people have less does it mean that they don't know more maybe they are also just waiting for that creative prompt to help them re-imagine how things can change for them this shift in the more traditional top-down approach in addressing social concerns is much more needed today especially at a time where dissent is discouraged and even feared as you reimagine the new normal we are called to democratize spaces where decisions are made about the everyday life of the many because if not we get banned aid solutions to problems that potentially do not exist similarly designers get to go beyond the usual assumption of being behind a computer choosing fonts or colors moving stuff around the software and making things pretty we too are being challenged to generate spaces where people feel safe and comfortable to share their thoughts and aspirations to imagine possibilities to identify for themselves what would make conditions improve for them we are encouraged to go beyond our discipline and this means we need to work with and not just for scientists policy makers economists academics business people to name a few at the end of the day we are all invited to engage with those beyond our immediate circles and develop empathy even for those whose fields of study or belief systems or lifestyles are wildly different from ours the hcd creates opportunities for people to come together to rethink how we look at problems and who we
