this video was brought to you by the great courses plus after a disastrous helicopter rescue mission to retrieve 52 diplomats taken hostage by Iran in 1979 was left burning in the desert the u.s. turned at the Lockheed corporation to procure an aircraft that could overcome the original plans weakest link in Operation Eagle Claw the rh 53 DC stallion helicopter had neither the range nor speed to complete the mission in a single stage instead the follow up operation incredible sport would call for the development of a fixed-wing aircraft that could take off and land in the soccer stadium in Tirana to accomplish this over 20 rocket engines would be strapped onto a modified c-130 boosting it to takeoff in as little as 100 feet and allowing it to come to a complete standstill on the air before dropping on a dime in the middle of the playing field from clandestine bases and safe houses around the world CIA has waged covert wars from the shadows is the agency to be trusted it informed escrows a day under the mantle of Muslim student followers of the Imams line strung the US Embassy in Tehran with the intention of in the words of Oscar Azad a quote occupying it for several hours however the intended reluctantly peaceful occupation escalated in a matter of hours as a crowd gathered to support the occupation and reportedly buses with demonstrators arrived the Supreme Leader's supported the takeover even referring to it as quote the second revolution from the 65 initial hostages 52 were kept his leverage with the others being released from being minorities which the students claim to support back in the United States the public the media and political figures were all outraged by the situation diplomatic talks yielded no results on April 11th 1980 US President Jimmy Carter started a foreign policy meeting by announcing to his cabinet quote gentlemen I want you to know that I am seriously considering an attempt to rescue the hostages a team of expert paramilitary people now report they have confidence than their ability to rescue our people Operation Eagle Claw Iran ignored any Appeals for respective diplomatic immunity first Supreme Leader of Iran Ruhollah Khomeini was intent on using the situation for propaganda and President Carter came to the conclusion that the hostages needed to be rescued by armed forces the plan was for the newly formed Delta Force to approach the embassy in Tehran storm it and evacuate the hostages using RH 53 DC's Stallion helicopters the helicopters would park inside the am radius soccer stadium across the street from the embassy and an operation to be called Eagle Claw the mission was led by Major General James B Vaught who reported directly to the president valuable intelligence on the location of the hostages within the embassy compound was gathered from the released Pakistani embassy cook who was CIA officer recognized by chance on a flight leaving Iran three weeks before the operation was launched Major John T Carney jr. flew to the secret staging area desert one for reconnaissance and preparation of the land for the incoming aircraft infrared lights and an outline for landing was drawn the preparation was by most accounts incredibly successful in the Army was confident in their ability to rescue the hostages despite that conference the operation turned out to be a colossal failure and President Carter would even credited for his re-election loss problems arose from the very start of the mission when the first mc-130e combat talon carrying part of the Delta Force arrived at desert one reduced nighttime visibility made for a less than ideal landing damaging the plane to the point it later had to be rebuilt even with the setback no one was harmed and the aircraft was able to fly away immediately after dropping off the soldiers further complicating the staging was a rogue tanker truck seen trying to escape the area it turned out to be a mere fuel smuggler but the soldiers couldn't risk the mission being compromised and had destroyed it with a rocket launcher the resulting fire actually aided the next two transport aircrafts to land more smoothly [Music] with the staging area established joining the mission before ec-130e s for fuel eight carrier-based rh 53 DC stallions to extract the hostages 93 Delta soldiers 12 Rangers for road-blocking 15 translators acting as truck drivers and 13 special forces members to attack the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as necessary aircraft flew towards desert one one of the helicopters had to be abandoned when sensors indicated a crack rotor blade the whole operation was then struck by a haboob or intense sandstorm which ruined the instruments on another one of the helicopters which had to return to its carrier the storm set them over an hour behind schedule and yet another helicopter became unusable due to damage to its hydraulic system only five helicopters were left which was on the verge of the minimum necessary before the mission became impossible they still needed to fly to their daylight hiding place at the second location desert - and then the stadium on the second night of the operation the missions leadership calculated that more of these helicopters would likely fail as the operation progressed a request to abort was sent to the president who canceled the mission two and a half hours later due to the increasing risks the operation would never even make it beyond desert 1 as the helicopters left the staging area blowing sands sent one of them crashing into a fully fueled c-130 sending the site up in a ball of flames operation incredible sport in light of the humiliating failure of Operation Eagle Claw President Carter ordered a new rescue mission in response the Pentagon conceived operation incredible sport the basic concept was to use a super short takeoff and landing aircraft made from modified c-130 Hercules the objective was to get these aircraft to take off almost vertically from the Emirati air stadium but the crew rescuers and hostages on board the aircraft would then land on an aircraft carrier so the hostages and rescuers could be offered medical assistance yet this new aircraft did not exist while both takeoffs and landing on a carrier had been done before by c-130s a new set of considerations had to be made from this mission among them planning for landing within a stadium with the walls around it going up 30 feet and the fact that the aircraft would be overloaded the first concept from modifying the c-130 consisted of giving the plane jet engines to enhance its thrust but that would have required 58 enormous jet-assisted takeoff bottles increasing the aircraft's weight and partially defeating the purpose the idea then transformed to focus on using rocket engines in what became the series plan for operation incredible sport over 20 rockets would be used for takeoff and landing with three separate sets being used at different moments Lockheed and the Air Force then collaborated at Eglin Air Force Base to make the rocket assisted c-130s a reality for c-130s were sent to the base two were modified a third was used for technology experimentation and demonstration and the last one was used to design and simulate the interior and the conditions needed to keep the aircraft manageable while having rockets impulse it the first modification that was done to the planes was to reinforce the structure particularly that of the fuselages said that they could withstand the firing of rockets in the impulse of such a powerful launch the second modification was to actually mount the rocket engines on the fuselage 880 submarine rockets were placed on the front of the fuselage to act as air brakes eight anti-radiation strike missile engines replaced downward facing landing brakes 8 MK 56 rocket engines were placed in the wing pylons and two additional anti-submarine rockets were placed beneath the tail so it wouldn't hit the ground to take off these new rocket assisted aircraft were designated XF c-130h and only three weeks after the program began a testbed aircraft was successfully flown testing within four months at the start of operations incredible sport one out of three new xf c13 HS was completed and delivered for testing initial tests seemed promising the aircraft could land at 85 knots before descending almost at 90 degrees vertically and it could take off in as little as a hundred feet progress slowed and went on october 29th a test flight ended terribly take off was smooth but during landing flight engineer was blinded by the light emanating from the upper deceleration rockets and the secrets computers were not working properly which meant that landing would have to be a manual exercise for an ideal landing before anti-submarine rockets had to be turned on at about 20 feet above the ground but the bottom four being turned on only once the plane was grounded unfortunately this was not an ideal landing the bottom rockets were turned on too early while the aircraft was still on the air this caused the plane to crash down with the starboard wing smashing against the ground with its rockets still on the new xf c-130h was swallowed by flames fortunately for those on board the rescue team at hand acted quickly extinguished the fire and no one reported any injuries some lockheed employees would later claim that the lower set of rockets malfunctioned and turned on by themselves in error but this was later deemed unlikely unexpected success the incident during testing marked an interruption in the project and added on to the perceived failure of President Carter to deal with the situation when he lost the election to Ronald Reagan in 1980 the tone of conversation between Iran and the u.s. shifted the Algeria declaration was signed in January of 1981 and the hostages were freed after one year two months two weeks and two days of captivity by that time a new XF c-130h was almost completed but it was moved to an Air Force Base in Georgia as it no longer had a use while the design of the XFC 138 s was still tinkered with up to 1982 the cancellation of operation incredible sports marked the death of rocket-assisted airplanes as well rather than focusing on super short takeoff and landing capabilities the US Department of Defense has since shifted its priorities to finding a stealth replacement for the special mission c-130 it remains a DoD priority to quote enhance capabilities to support special operations forces
