hi thanks for joining me oftentimes we want to change all columns at one time so let's say you have a data frame and you want to change all your columns at one nine to uppercase or all your columns to case or let's say you want to look for a certain pattern in columns and then change those column names or if you want to just rename multiple columns at one time you can do that with the set names function so i'm going to show you real quick how to do that so i'm gonna load in radar and the tide reverse package and i'm gonna read in this new orleans crime data csv so real quick this is what the data frame looks like so let's say i want to rename the first three columns i only do that all at one time so i'm loading my data frame i'm selecting the first three columns then i'm using the set names function with the c operator to rename these columns to these new names so currently i have nopd item type and type text and i want to rename that to nopd ty and call type so i run this function real quick you can see here it renamed all those columns at one time so my second example let's say i want to rename all the columns to lowercase so if you look right now i think they're all uppercase from another type text so the first letter is capitalized followed by lowercase but i'm rename that all to lowercase i can use the set names function and then i can grab all the names of the columns and then i want to use str to lower to do that all at one time so you can see here they're all lowercase now and i can do the opposite and just do all that to uppercase with str to upper but let's say i have multiple columns in my data frame and then i will replace that by looking for a certain type like in excel control f basically i want to look for a pattern and then change that column name so you can see here i have this t y for type and type text and i want to just change that wherever t y is at to call so this example would be call text or call p so i can use that with the set names function with the names and then use str2 lower and look for anything with t y and place that of call you can see here it's been changed to call text and then copy so set names is a really powerful function if you want to change multiple columns at one time hope you enjoyed this really quick video on set names thank you
