okay welcome to blink skills this is xeon we're going to go ahead and practice renaming files using windows powershell so focus on the blue powershell window that we have here and let's begin we'll first create a file which i'll call test1.txt validate that it's there looks good there we have our test1.txt now we'll go ahead and use the first method for renaming that i'd like to cover which is mv this is a command that was ported over from the linux unix world and it means move so we're moving one file to another file old file name to a new file name so we're going to take mv test one and we put test.one.txt here so we'll stick with that and then i'll rename that and this is a good opportunity to fix it test2.txt validate looks good we now have test2.txt here is a longer method the native powershell method which is rename item okay and then we will say test2.txt and we'll call it test three dot txt not bad right okay so let's go ahead test three dot txt now keep in mind this works for folders too so i can do a quick creation of a folder now we have a directory and then we can rename that directory as well okay validate looks good and we know there's a folder because we can do cd test folder and now we're in there nothing in that folder back out we're back where we were and there we are you now know how to rename using powershell so to recap you want to use either mv or you want to use rename item those are two of the simplest ways to rename a file or folder using windows powershell like many blink skills this is a small skill it's one that you can learn very quickly you now have it and you can use this and scale this to do many many very interesting things using these skills as building blocks which we will build together over time thank you have a great day
