push-to-talk so hello I'll put this here on the microphone so you can hear it hello and welcome back to prepping 101 on guns America I have an interesting topic this week as you can see these are filled telephone the ta 312 PT is the most common American version that you'll find and it is very difficult to walk into a military surplus store even a lot of older gun shops without seeing one of these there and I think for most of us I know for me until I actually got one and sat down and figured out how it works I figured that they were just a piece of memorabilia that I would never be interested in but okay when I when I started radio communication in general and as my regular readers here know probably that's all that's left after the Trump before II is just my regulars who take this stuff seriously if you remember the the rtl-sdr article that I did and by then I was doing video that was in last last year last season you can see radio signals pretty clearly even from a very long distance away within for for like walkie talkie signals like those um the bow fangs and though in the arm that hold koufang those chinese radios that a lot of the prepper sites sell those signals can be seen literally seen on a screen up to 40 miles away you're more likely to see them within seven miles if you're on the ground but if they have a tower up high you can see those signals forty to fifty miles away and want someone sees your signal once they see that spike that as you're talking spike triangulating you is actually really easy especially when you're the government you've got these huge antenna rigs all the place now if you travel on the roads and you just pay attention you'll see that they have these gigantic antenna arrays all over the place now that they've quietly been putting up all these years those are not just cell phone towers if you look closely at them they are a number of different number of different frequencies they're set up for even some long-distance ham radio size frequencies in the under 30 under 30 megahertz range the handheld radios they operate in the 400 megahertz range mostly and those signals are the police use them fire use them so they are they have a very substantive network of antennas to be able to triangulate exactly your location but you do have to communicate oftentimes you will want to have some some outposts that are that are scouting outposts or listening outposts just to watch to see if anything is coming your way and as I've explained they will probably be using an RTL SDR bug with solar with a solar panel connected to a battery and a laptop as well so that you can actually monitor those signals to see if anything is coming at you yourself this is for communication between teams team members and the they work with a wire they don't use any airwaves at all and they are battle-hardened that's the nice thing about these military telephones the wire is really any 2 strand 2 to 2 pole wire 2 to 2 sets of wires in a in one case obviously it'll be stranded wire because you're bending it for costs these and I also have the Swiss one here and the reason I have the Swiss ones and I will test these as well is because sportsmen guide happened to have them for like 40 dollars this is going back maybe 3 months ago this column is kind of a labor of love for me so I don't I only do it when I have I'm as you all know because I go dry for for a while once in a while and I thought I was going to get to these right away last season before before the all the year and review stuff that we did but I just didn't get to them and now they're gone I searched for military telephone on the Sportsman's guide and there's nothing there so apparently these I looked on eBay and they resemble a German telephone from World War two that goes for outboards of like 500 bucks so that might be why but they probably work too I'm going to test them and they probably work because for the most part you'll see that these these three twelves do work they work really well in fact and I will demonstrate these these can be had for beep them like Buy It Now price on eBay is like 80 to 90 bucks I've seen them in military surplus stores for 40 bucks 50 bucks 60 bucks sometimes you can pop one on eBay for 20 bucks that may be ugly but may work it's military gear so the fact that it's been weathered a little bit usually isn't going to isn't going to mean that it doesn't work for me I think one of the reasons that I never really looked into this thing and I just kind of passed it by was it just looks so complicated on top here it looks like you're not going to be able to figure out how it works but that is actually not the case I'll explain their controls they do take batteries a common misconception of this phone is that you actually power it up with the with the side frame here this side crank thing and you don't it actually does run on batteries and even when you have it set in the remote setting the batteries the voice is run by batteries to decels I have to turn ourselves in here they can go in one out there they go one up one down they works on three volts so it works in they put them in series they can go either way though as far as I know there is a seal around the battery compartment that surprisingly is not really that drawing rotted on these the the other controls probably will come set up like bizarre right now the this C BL B and C once it's a see the outer CBS maybe but the that you want to be in in local battery and LD that's apparently on the crank on the crank side the on the crank side that can be powered by a this cable here but the but the voice is powered by a battery and then this is internal external control you want this to be on int internal and the loudness just turn it up so you can hear your clicker this thing here doesn't this cap here is an interface with something else that I it's a different kind of handset or something i'll how it works and this is where you will hook your your wires here we are with the phone's hooked up so the what that crank is for is that's how the phones call each other you turn the crank and it makes the phone ring and this knob here turns that click up and down exactly completely off on that phone so you can make it quieter whatever is also just a light that can be added to the terminals here I see it fulfill on ebay once a while if you wanted to leave your leave your um found leave your clickers off if you learn sensitive location so that how that works the phones themselves really don't don't need much explanation they are pushed to talk so there's no there's no I guess you'd call it by synchronous communication on them you just push to talk so hello I'll put this here on the microphone so you can hear it this is just the way they work it's not um it's not rocket science here but the important thing obviously is just is to show you that they is to show you that they work and that's it you know that's really it folks and I might as well show you the Swiss phone I'm Swiss Swedish I don't know I don't remember I think it might be Swedish Swedish brown or something there they have a they have a cradle here on their phone which is I would say the only superior savings of the American phone one of the complaints I've seen with the American phone is that it's um you don't know if it's hung up but you can just kind of leave it there and it doesn't hang itself up and then you can miss an important call the I don't know what these controls do I haven't really played with them it looks like it's got a local battery common battery switch but I don't know how you turn that switch in it it's it's it actually has on the case it has it has a the ABCD in there in their language oh no this must be Swedish Swedish I guess but the that what I don't like about this phone is that it's got this bakelite it kind of comes apart the batteries go down in here it's a screw compartment down in here and you just kind of tuck the batteries in there the battery box in there so there's a battery box to lose this doesn't look like the most robust cable end to me like these these are they never fail from what I've seen this does not look like the most robust having a system they can could have I would say that's my my biggest concern that these I believe are are like new barely they have people's names on they obviously were used and it's the way it cranks is the crank is on the side here but crank comes out the crank unscrews like that and it sits down in here so when you slide the cover on so that's like this one you your crank is in there so when you open it you're going to you take your crank out and install it by just open this little door here and in putting it in there and then just kind of screwing it on and then eventually screws on it works like I hooked it up to my American phone and it does work so I'm not even bother to hook it up to his own phone because obviously it's the same NATO kind of methodology and it works this way too because they had to sniff the Nifty like a real telephone belt or a bicycle grout kind of thing going on besides adorable and it doesn't work I could test it and it does work if I push the talk here if I push the talk here you will pick it up hopefully in the microphone on the video that it does actually work and it works the other way it works the other way as well and it is clear as a bell it's just like just standing next to me which in this case I am standing next to the phones but um that would work at miles away as well so the the wire the wire for these phones is this fall of just this school of wire I got for maybe 20 or 30 bucks on eBay you don't see them that cheap as much you see the more for 50 bucks this is a point five kilometer which is about 1,600 feet spool of wire any wire any two strand wire will work the bags for the American phones I also got with the ones that I got I got them from a buyitnow guy these are reproduction bags I don't know what the purpose of the second hole is I don't know if doesn't make any sense to me but whatever we've all seen them in military surplus stores and that is military phones so we will see you next time
