Save boarder placeholder

[Music] well hello there thank you for joining me my name is ron from cammastery.com where you can go to learn how to make great videos with camtasia in this session what i want to do is answer some questions so every sunday or just about every sunday i like to get together with you and answer some student questions so i have a course called cam mastery camtasia mastery and you can find that at cammastery.com store but like i said what i want to do is answer some questions so if you have a question you can feel free to type it in the chat if you're here with me live and if not feel free to drop it in the comments below and i'll check it out and get back to you so let's look at our questions for today we have seven questions uh because last couple weeks i was reviewing some of the content that lon naylor shared with me over the course of the year so got a little bit backed up but let's get to these questions today so we have animating handwriting straight sketch older placeholders asset live asset size in library blurry video dynamic watermark and a slide to hide an image so all of these i have listed in the description below if you want to just jump to the one that is most interesting to you feel free to click the numeric link right before the title and that'll jump you right to that section of course unless you're with me live in which case that doesn't work because i can't go forward in time like that so first question somebody had commented on a previous video great tutorial is it possible to make handwriting effect in camtasia so that it appears one letter after another so let's take a look at this i'm going to jump over to camtasia and in here i want to show you what i think this person is talking about so i'm going to hit play here and if you see there i did a it was basically just a a animation that showed the content from left to right and i think that that's what the person is looking for and so that's the easiest way to do this if we want to reproduce this type of thing that looks as close to handwriting as we can get there are a few things we'll want to do so let's start with going to our annotations and we need some sort of text so i'll grab some text and bring it in here and the next thing we want to do is make sure that it is a font that looks like handwriting so if i zoom in up here i will change my font the one that i thought looked best was bradley did i go too far where's bradley bradley there you are bradley hand so this is the font that i used i thought that that looked the most hand-drawn you know without looking looking too scripty so what i'll do is go back here we'll zoom back out uh i just didn't want it too fancy there are some really fancy fonts as well so we want to get this the size that we want so i'll i'll trust that you know how to do that you know you know bump this font size up change it to the information you want to say if you want to say i don't know i used my name but maybe you wanted to say your name your name there we go so we'll start with creating some sort of annotation with the i used like i said the bradley hand font um find something that works for you i don't know if if that will be perfect but what i'll do then is i'm going to go somewhere inside you know like a little bit later in that annotation and what i'm going to do is add an animation and the way i do that is shift a to add that animation so when we zoom back out what i want to do is say before this animation i want it well let me back up on this animation let me just work backward and show you what is really happening here so you can see if i work backward it's like it's erasing that information and that's what i want to do here so what i'm going to say is at the end i want it nice and full but at the beginning i want it to be cut out from this point back to the beginning so what i'm going to do is i'm going to crop this text box all right to do that i'm going to use the alt key on my keyboard hold that down and then this will give me the cropping handles and i'll just drag this all the way to the left okay so now if i oh and the other thing i'm going to do if i zoom in down here is i'm going to make this probably a little longer right so it's like one second by default let's make it closer to two seconds something like that all right and let's play through that yeah all right so like this two second video this two second clip just shows and it does kind of look like you're writing your name as you go across there so i like that that's probably the easiest way to do it one other thing that i would do is down here in the lower left on the animation i would right click the animation and for the easing excuse me i would use linear so now when we zoom back out and i play through this i think it looks a little more consistent there we go so it's like the same speed all the way across so when you're doing this a lot of times the animation that they use by default is auto for the the way they ease the animation and i love it it's great but there are some cases when i want to use linear to make it just consistent throughout the animation and i think when you're doing something like a handwriting that's what you want to do so create that font just remove that part at the beginning and then show you know kind of reveal the text as you go from left to right okay so that is question one let's look at question two all right uh somebody said oh uh you know making the diagonal line straight so again this was another video that i did been trying to make that diagonal line straight so in this case this person was using a sketch animation and what i want to do is show you that sketch animation and show you what we were talking about and then i want to give you another way to do it so that it really is perfectly straight so here back in camtasia what i would do is this boom and there is a perfectly horizontal sketch motion only it's not sketch motion at all so what i said initially was hey you can take this diagonal sketch like this and if you just grab this and drag this down until it is like you know right around here that should be a pretty straight line and that looks really straight and that might be all you need to do but if you want it to be perfectly straight then what i did was i created a line and then just animated it i just made it get larger okay so i started with a nice full line so go over here to our annotations lines are arrows and lines grab a line and drag it over so there's my line the way that i make it uh perfectly straight so if i grab this and i say i want it to be like this long but oh where i can't quite figure out exactly where it is to get it completely horizontal the two ways that i'll do it are one to drag it up here to the center and then make sure that like make sure that this part like one part of it is at one one part uh what do i say like at the center and then the other part is also at the center like that uh the other way i do it is to just take it to the border of the image and then say okay this is where i want it to be and then move it and say okay i'm underlining you know something like if i went here you know i want to underline your name okay so if i were to do that the way i would animate this well again first of all i wanted to make i would want to make sure that it is long enough so let's start with making it long enough and i'll just start about here let's get it right in the center make sure the length is good right about there and that's actually not a bad position i might actually want to leave it there i was going to say my plan was to have it down a little bit from center but actually i kind of like it there so maybe i'll leave it there another thing i can change of course is the color so if i want a different color you know i can make it this cyan and then i need to add the animation so i'm going to do the shift a again and then i want to say this is the end state this is how i want it to finish the way i want it to begin is so that it's shrunk all the way down to the left so i'm going to hold down well actually i don't need to hold down anything i'm just going to click and drag this all the way to the left so those buttons nearly line up and if i want to get even more exact i could but oh did i do that at the end i did it at the end it said at the beginning not the first time i've done that ctrl z to undo make sure i'm at the beginning try that again grab this guy and drag him back to the beginning right about there all right just as close as i can get that's i guess it's snapping to the other part but that's okay so what i can do is it shows your name yeah well i guess it moved up a little bit so if i put well i'll undo that um you get the idea there we go so it underlines it what i would do for the urn name part let me see if i can do this quickly is right click and copy the properties go to the beginning of this right click and paste the properties there we go so now it's in the same starting and ending position that's the way i would do it and then again here at the beginning crop this part down so one more time let's play through this see if this works i write it and then i underline it okay so that is one way for you to get a an underline i guess if you're looking for a nice perfect underline grab a line just animate it make it make it very small at the beginning and then make it as long as you need there at the end so that is question number two let's look at question three uh oh camtasia 2019 so i talked about placeholders excuse me talked about placeholders and said hey this person said hey i'm not using 2020 and i'm not sure that i'm going to upgrade is there a way for me to use placeholders in previous versions so of course placeholders is something that is new in camtasia 2020 you if you want to use something that is like placeholders we can make that happen so let me show you back here in camtasia how i might do something like that so let's say for example i have this icon in the lower right and if i just play through this you'll see that it does a couple of things it gets larger at one point then it'll flip around it gets a little more transparent and then flips back around okay so there's some sort of animation happening there on that that uh image and what i want to do is just replace it i look at this and say oh you know what i don't want this image that has the the corners and the background i can see i'd rather have the image that isn't there uh there's the image that doesn't have the background with it so in previous versions of camtasia and this version as well you can go to your media and find this item okay so in that case that is the rh logo no alpha and what i can do is i can replace it so i can right click rh logo no alpha so whatever the whatever the item is you're trying to replace if it's a video or an image or whatever and i can say let's update the media it says okay what do you want to update it with and i say well i want it to update with the one that has the alpha and that's this one and so now notice that it completely replaced the image and if i go in it does the scale it does the flip it does the sca the transparency and it's all this exact same thing only with a completely different well maybe not completely different but it is definitely a different image so you can see there that i was able to keep everything every element of this the same but all i had to do was swap out the image so right click and update your media if you need something that is basically like a placeholder so you put your media in wherever that may be and then right click and update the media and that's the easy way to do that in previous versions of camtasia alright so on to the next question a huge time saver let me go a little bit bigger because i'm having a hard time reading that there we go uh like to save a group okay saving groups the library and asking what it should what we should use canvas size or visible size okay so in this question this person is adding an element to their library and we see a couple of a couple of different options when doing that in camtasia 2020. so let's look at camtasia and try this exact same thing so let me show you an example using my lower third so you can see that i animate my name the website and then they animate away okay now i want this thing this group it's really a couple of grouped items to be added to my library and let's look at what this option says so i'm going to right click add to library or ctrl shift a and this is what this student is saying saying what there's these two options here at the bottom use canvas size and use visible size what's the difference so let me show you i'm going to do both of these i'm going to use my default library and i'm going to call this one lower third canvas wow it helps if my fingers are on the right keys canvas there we go i don't need caps locked one more time canvas there we go and i'm going to do the same thing right click add to library and this one is going to be lower third and this one is going to be visible so i can show you the difference between these two okay so one lower third canvas so let's go over to where this isn't and i'll actually show you the visible one first so if i just right click and i say add to timeline i say okay where did you know how does this look okay great looks wonderful i love it that works just fine now let me delete this and instead let me grab this visible and drag it over and then i say oh okay in this case it is actually making it the whole this the size of the entire thing which surprises me is that how it sees this oh it does see this at okay got to back up let's back up do this one more time i actually need this group to be the visible size so what i had was the group actually existed as the size of the canvas so both of those options were exactly the same let's fix that right click delete it delete it right click delete it delete it let's do it one more time quickly because there we go so this this piece down here all right i'm going to do it add to the library lower third this one is going to be the canvas and this one is going to be the visible lower third visible visible size okay so let's do this again so i'm going to go out here and i'm going to right click visible and add to timeline and playhead there we go so now you can see that it put it right in the middle of my canvas we said that's probably not what we wanted let me play through that and see if that's what i wanted nope that isn't what i wanted because what happened is i want this to be like the corner of my frame so you can see that these start out here to the left and below and then go to the corner of the frame so what i want to do is say uh that's not exactly what i wanted you know i'd prefer if it was like down here all right so let me just move over to another part here and show you now let me right click the canvas one and add that to the timeline and play through and now it's in the right place so the way to understand this is if you just make it the visible size then maybe you have like a text box and it will just be that text box and it'll be able to float anywhere on your screen but if it's something that's in a very specific place for example my lower thirds i want them to appear there at the bottom i don't want them in the middle of my screen then in that case i'll want to choose canvas so if you're not sure canvas is the way to go and canvas is the one that appears by default but like i said if you have something small like a sketch motion or keyboard shortcut or something like that and you you want to be able to put it wherever you want on the screen then visible is really all you need there so that's the difference between those two library options so let's go to our next question all right another time i'm going to have to zoom in here let's see middle of the course uh an issue with images okay tried recording let me see um oh it's about blurry great got it okay so this person is saying hey i've done a few things um i'm trying to produce this video but it's coming out blurry how do i fix a blurry video great i can help with that the way i would help with that is to jump over to camtasia and i kind of wrote out an answer and summarized it here so the first thing that i told this person to do was to make sure that they're recording and producing in the same dimensions in other words if you are working on a 1920x1080 video then you'll want to be sure that you're recording in 1920 by 1080. so it's however you're going to produce make sure you're recording at that same dimension that way everything can appear at 100 the second thing i mentioned it there is making sure everything is scaled to 100 so when it's scaled to 100 you get the crispest images or the crispest video you're not you're not resizing anything and so an implied trick here is when things are resized they get blurry all right so just a like a heads up there that anytime you're resizing anything it will get blurry it's not a bug or an issue with camtasia it's every every kind of program that's going to resize something it has to make adjustments it has to make assumptions about how how things are going to look so if you produce and record at the same dimensions and the blurry media is changed to its scale of 100 those are both good starts i think though that the issue was with the output settings so i've had a few people come back and say i've tried to produce a video but the quality of that video isn't great even when i'm producing in 1920 by 1080. so here are the settings that i use so we'll just jump over to camtasia and look at those so we'll do export local custom we'll go to video settings tab so let's look at that so i'll go over to export local file it could be export or share if you have an older version it'll be the share menu but we'll say we want a local file and we're going to choose custom production settings next of course we want the mp4 next and we want the video settings tab okay now here in video settings this is where i have gone in and i have updated some things so i would put i believe that this starts at maybe baseline or main if you change this h.264 profile to high that's great the other thing i'll do is i will change this to four the h.264 level to four this assumes that you're using a 1920x1080 video if you're doing something that is smaller or something that is larger you would probably want to change these as well so if your video was uh 1280 by 720 for example then um high would be okay you might want to do main but even at high you wouldn't need four you could do a lesser one like 3.2 or something so anyway like i said the the settings i'm giving you now are just for the uh 1920x1080 or but it should work for most videos as well all right so the other thing i would do is make sure that in coding mode it comes up with quality by default and i would change that to bit rate now i would start with 1500 because 1500 at least in my opinion tends to get a decent video size with our decent quality with it with the smallest video size so 1500 might be too small for you but in most cases when i'm just creating a general video 1500 is all i need okay if that doesn't work then what well in the instructions i say so i i would produce something at this frame rate and then if we go back to camtasia in the instructions i say if that's not good enough try 3000 if that's not good enough 7 500 if that's not good enough 15 000. so what i would technically do like i said is just get a portion of the video so i might say show me this select some amount of time right click and choose produce timeline selection as so we have just this just just these few seconds and then go through and choose the same things right video settings find the numbers you want next next next and then just produce that portion that way you have just you don't have to produce the entire video you just have you know some you know 10 seconds 15 seconds or whatever and you can see if those video quality settings are good enough like i said 1500 usually works what i do for my best videos where i'm talking to camera like this i want that camera quality to be as good as possible so i will use up to 15 000 whenever i'm creating those types of videos so that should give you a good range like i said fifteen hundred if that doesn't work three thousand if that's not quite what you want try uh seventy five hundred if that's not great fifteen thousand i cannot imagine you need to go above 15 000 if you do there's something else that you're missing or something else that's wrong in your settings all right so let's go back to powerpoint look at the next one oh that was the answer okay so the next question is about having a dynamic watermark that is text and so i believe what this person is saying is i want to have this watermark that appears and disappears and can move around the screen and things like that how would you do that so let's look at camtasia to do that i would start with here we go so i would start and i'm going to show you that you know something that i would consider an example and that is of course it helps if i double click in the right place so just to preview this i would have something like this come in and it could slide and now he said you know i wanted something to change every 30 seconds now i'm making these changes like every second i'm doing something else that's not exactly what he's looking for but just to show you you know this is this is one way that you could animate this alright so the first part i want to show you is i'm going to create a text box that sits over top of everything else so i'll start with annotations grab text put it you know wherever i want you know maybe i want it to start in the middle right we'll call this watermark but you probably want you know a you know the name of your company or your your name or something like that to be here so that's number one number two i would extend this so that it covers the entire video so in this case if i click the magnifying glass button here at the bottom i can get it to resize the entire video i'll put it up at the top at a new track and i'll just make sure this goes the entire duration right so from beginning to end and there we go in fact i might not know exactly where the end is so if i do control and end on my keyboard that will take me to the last part and then i can just drag this all the way to the end alright so i have my watermark now this person was saying you know can i do different things with it yes so it's not technically a watermark at this point because it's just solid white text so what i would do to make it more of a watermark is up here in the upper right i would select its opacity and drop the opacity down to make it more like a watermark so you know 40 50 somewhere in that ballpark will give you a good watermark and let you see through whatever's there so that's one way to start so again i would make the whole thing you know we're doing the whole timeline make that opacity you know somewhere in the ballpark of 40 percent and then the other thing i would do before doing any animations is go to visual effects and add a drop shadow so let me drag that over to this effect as well or to this text the reason for that you look at this and say well i can see that watermark just fine without any drop shadow in fact i don't see a difference between that and the version with the drop shadow and i would agree with you except if i go here to this part of the video and why don't i see that why don't i see that video down there let me let me solo that out oops right click oh you don't see the screen i'm sorry i forgot to move it back out all right yep that's okay so i'm going down here and i want to see why isn't this showing me a white background i wonder that is odd this is oh because i think i yep the opacity is down to zero boop there we go that's why i couldn't remember what was up with that so if i look here if i have that watermark there without the drop shadow so i'll go over to the properties of that and not of that there we go of my watermark and i turn off the drop shadow now you you can barely barely see that and of course if it's right here on white you'll never see it okay so instead what i'll do is i'll try this on a dark background and on a light background so i'll go back and forth between these two and see what's best and like i said i want to add a drop shadow so i'll drag that drop shadow down to this and probably what i want to do is increase the opacity to make that drop shadow much darker and even bumping it up to near 100 i think is fine i'll probably reduce the blur to make it a little bit more a little easier to see so maybe i'll drop it down there to five so now i can see that there's clearly a watermark there and if i go on a dark background there's a watermark there so just try it between those two the light and the dark to make sure you can see it in both places so we have this text here at the top great it just sits there the whole time if that's what you want okay great but maybe you don't so i would just add animations every so often so this person said like every 30 seconds i want to you know maybe have this appear and then disappear okay so i would go in for 30 seconds and i would add an animation shift a and then go you know to another 30 seconds and shift a and another 30 seconds right so i would just go through here and add these however i want now i'm going to undo these last couple because i'm going to show you a trick here in a minute how we can we don't have to do that so we're going to start off with it visible and then here we'll make it invisible so i'll just drag this opacity all the way down to nothing and then later it comes back now i might want it in a different position right so but for now i'll leave it there now what i would do is i would grab both of these so i'm using the control key so a click let me show you this let's zoom down here to the bottom i'm going to click the first item and let go and then i'm going to hold down the ctrl key and click the second item okay so now i have those two selected and then i'm going to move this playhead out further and paste did it work paste i don't see that it's actually pasting paste nope it's pasting something else instead let me try that again so let's try these make sure i have both of those grab this ctrl grab this right click right on here copy both of those maybe i need to do that paste there we go and then come out further paste come out further paste so now i have it appear and then it disappears for a while and then it reappears for a while and then it disappears for a while and then it reappears for a while you get the idea so you can go through here rather than creating you know 70 of these just create the couple that you want and then continue to you know make it appear and disappear as needed okay i see delete that guy real quick okay so just repeat those like i said as needed the other thing i would do is when it is here like maybe here at this position you want it at the in the center uh whoops let's go back to the center so again these just you know appear disappear appear disappear up here disappear as we go through here all right all the way through what i would do then is you know maybe this first one we want in the center then let's go here and this one i want over here and then this one i want over here and then this one i want down here right so as you're going through here it appears and comes down here to the corner if you want that and then it disappears back to the center so there's some motion maybe you don't want that maybe you want it to just appear and disappear at those corners without having all that motion associated with it in that case what i would do is right click here where this like we say we want to keep it in the lower left i'll copy its properties i'll go here to where it started in the center i'll right click and paste its properties and then just drop its opacity down so now rather than it moving in and out of a corner like that one does it just appears in that corner and then well i want it to disappear in that corner as well so i'll right-click here paste the properties once more drop the opacity once more and there we go so now it should just appear in that corner stay there for a while and after a few seconds disappear okay so that's a kind of a long-winded answer of how i would do that and it's really again just create a text box at the top of everything make it a little bit opaque a little bit i should say a little bit transparent so like around forty percent add a drop shadow make sure that drop shadow is good and solid as much as possible and then animate out however you'd like put it in different corners move it around but it's basically one whole track at the top of the entire presentation and you animate it to your heart's desire that's the way i would do it all right and another thing i would do probably at the end of that is i would save it in the library right so right click it add it to the library so you can repeat that and use that same clip in future videos okay on to the next question all right blurriness issue is fixed so this was the blurry question from before now they need to slide in an image and replace an existing image okay so let's look at that so here in camtasia what i have is what do i have here not there not there here we go so i am going to remove my watermark because i don't need that right now and this person said i want to have an image say here on the left as an example and i want another image to come in and replace that image and maybe another image to replace that image maybe another image to replace that image how do you do that and i guess the issue that this person was having was that both of those items were coming in at the same time or they were both images were moving at the same time so let me show you how i would fix this and i think what's happening is oops there we go we'll just drag this in here um i mean i you know you can put it wherever i'll just leave it in the center for now it doesn't matter where we're animating this from and then i say oh let's add another one just like it so i'm going to ctrl c ctrl v this new one though we will make it different by colorizing it to this nice bright green or maybe gonna make it yellowish yeah i'll just make it yellowish okay so i'm gonna drag this off the screen and what i want to do is have it animate down and replace the one that's there so to do that i think what this person was doing mistakenly was selecting both of these items at the bottom and adding an animation to both and then having let me see let me make sure i do this right and then having you know when this comes down the other one would come down too or something like that where the other image was moving while the animation was happening and that's not what we want so we want to take this animation and we want to leave that first item alone so just make sure that first item has no animation attached to it then this new animation can come in from any direction i don't care where i dropped it in from the top you saw before i'd had it come in from the sides wherever it works for you leave that first item alone and then what i like to do is actually delete that item from behind so once it's gotten in place once it's there just delete it and then you don't have to worry about it again so i can grab another item i can click this oop ctrl z i meant to copy it and i cut it so i'll copy this now i don't need to copy it i'll just do it again from another direction so we'll go back to the media i'll grab the logo again and i'll resize it and you know i don't i don't care where you want to bring it in from we'll bring it in from the other side here and i will come in and i will add an animation to just this one and afterward i want it to be here and when that's done i want this lower one to disappear so now we have the blue one yellow one comes in and replaces it and the blue one comes in and replaces that so hopefully what you can do is see that you only animate the one that's on top and then as soon as that one on top gets into that place you can delete or just you know trim any space after the old one has been covered up because nobody will see it disappear because the new one has taken its place so i hope that answers that question and that was all i had for you today so those are the seven things i wanted to share with you i'm going to check quickly and i get a comment from my good friend lon who says currently placeholders kind of suck anyway should have checked earlier for chat thank you for that lawn uh yeah they do they're not they're not uh they're not the best we don't lon and i don't use them too often so if you do have a placeholder that you're using that works for you great i will say there is one place where i use the placeholder and i'll show you that let me jump over to camtasia this that's well it's technically in a template so if i do let me save this real quick so i save the pre-show let's save the post show just so i can go back to that if anybody needs it and i hit enter there we go i'm going to do a file new project from template and i do my free lesson fridays so i'm going to click that one or double click i should say and with my free lesson friday what i have is the same intro to each of these free lesson fridays and then i use a placeholder to put in my new my new video so whatever that old let's see if i can find one quickly here um and off the screen you can't see it but i have a folder called free lesson friday and i have free lessons to be shared and so you know maybe i want this update media one so i i can drag it in here to the media bin and then i would just drag it down to this placeholder choose ripple replace and then it transitions right from the one into the other and i'm teaching a new lesson so that's the one place where i do use placeholders is for my free lesson friday videos my those those templates um but for the most part i i you know we we create most things from scratch so that is that is what that's what i would recommend creating them from scratch and baba says i love your videos thanks a lot well thank you baba i appreciate you showing up and visiting me live and leaving that comment thank you i hope that these are helpful that's why i do them i don't do them for my health i do them for you so i hope that this has been very helpful to all of you if you have questions leave those in the comments below i'll be happy to get to those until next week so long thank you so much take care you
