share my experiences as a nigerian living in canada if that's something you'd be interested in following up with please subscribe like and share this video um and then i'm just gonna get right into it so i'm just going to be sharing tips on how you can save money as a new immigrant in canada to be honest many of these things i didn't know on time so um yeah let's just get right into the video okay so the very first point i'm going to talk about is arguing arguing out of debt and i'm going to explain myself so in so many situations there are certain fees that are attached to certain transactions that can actually be written off you guys understand what i mean so for example there was a time so this time i went to my bank and i had to pay my rent so it was a supposed to be money order so supposed to be money order and the banker was like um that will attract a fee of eight dollars and i was like really why should i pay eight dollars for it is that not something you can write off and she was like yeah i can actually write it off so she wrote it up for me so you see in that situation if i didn't argue my way out of that situation but i've probably had to pay more than what i actually ended up paying another situation was when i was trying to move to my current apartment so i already had internet with my internet company and when i wanted to move here um like what i try to do in those situations is i try to talk to multiple agents to see which would be the most affordable right so sometimes somebody gives you something higher sometimes somebody else is able to give you something more affordable sometimes it also depends so sometimes you talk to a regular agent sometimes you talk to somebody in their marketing department who knows of better deals right so i just tried to check here and there so when i wanted to move here i called them and i told them i wanted to move and somehow i was able to get a cheaper deal in this building because i think this building has some kind of benefits but um so the person the first agent i spoke with said oh this the amount is going to cost you um but you're going to pay you are supposed to ordinarily pay a moving fee of thirty dollars but i can write that off for you and i was like okay that's fine i called another agent and she says she was able to actually get me something cheaper but she says you'd have to pay a moving fee of 30 and i was like can you write that off and she said yes see so basically else i mean by being able to argue your way out of debt because some of them can actually be written off and then sometimes it's just a system fail so for example when i was deciding on moving here i was deciding between keeping my internet company and changing to another one so i contacted the other one and i was actually serious about moving to the other company just because their rates were more affordable for me but somehow i changed my mind about it so like i signed up for it but then i canceled and before i even signed up i asked them different questions like is there a counseling fee like if i try to go with this thing just try to know those details is there a counseling fee attached to it and all that kind of stuff and they said no everything is good but somehow i kept getting bills so i think it was cans food but the system overlooked that but i kept getting views and i raised my call to be like no it's okay you don't lose anything but i kept getting bills and then the very very the very last um like two days ago i got yet another view of about twelve dollars from the same company that i signed up for but cancelled saying i owed twelve dollars something and if i didn't know how to paid i could call their collection department to schedule a payment so i called the collection department but i was like give me a second let me just talk to somebody in your billing department so they transform into the billing department and when i went there i just asked a simple question please what are you guys billing me for right what are you guys believe me for so she's like okay hold on one second she's like um we'll bring you one dollar for she's like hold on one second i'll be right back i was like okay it's okay take your time it's all good and then she comes again she's like sorry just hold on a bit i'm like okay and then finally she comes back and she's like it's fine moving forward you know he knows anything right so do you guys see that so in that kind of situation if i didn't call in or if i decided okay i'll just go ahead and pay for this because it's just twelve dollars i'm losing money for something i didn't get any benefits from and that's not what you want to do you want to save every single penny or use it for your benefit if that makes sense second point i'll definitely see is employee benefits slash discounts so sometimes as an employee that certain perks depending on your employer there are certain perks that your employer may have with other companies so you may have certain packs with perks with like hp so like their services or their products you may get me you may be entitled to some kind of discounts and if you don't know you're going to lose out of that or some certain software or stuff like that right so it's good to check with your employer to find out what those perks or benefits are because they may be there and you'll be spending money paying the full amount for it not benefiting from the employee discounts that you you have so for example if you have like health benefits and go to a pharmacy store go with your that health card that your company gave you apart from the health card you have from the government right so that instead of paying for your prescriptions you get those for a lesser amount or basically free depending on what the perks are like or um like certain companies have discounted companies like apple so instead of paying the full amount you pay some certain dollars less depending on the percentage that your employer has with that company or for example like i said with hp and then it's not even just in situations like this sometimes it's in situations of like recreation so like with a certain cinema they have discounts with certain hotels or resorts they have discounts you're able to make a have those discounts and then pay a lot less than someone who doesn't work with such companies or get such discounts i don't even make sense but i think it does let me let me know what i'm saying make sense you guys the third point i would say is price matching and coupons so price matching this is something that is very new to me because in nigeria we don't do price matching or coupons but basically for example if i want to buy a pineapple at walmart i will master those pineapples for three dollars and i'm able to quickly check online and see that no frills actually has it for two dollars 30 cents i could ask for more to please price match with no fuel so instead of paying three dollars at walmart i paid two dollars 30 cents which is what no fuels offers because walmart's price matches does that make sense so i know a few companies income in canada that price match are best buy staples the source walmart no frills home depot petsmart canadian tire and delete goes on and on right they sort of paint the full amount even another company that they price match with because some companies don't price match with everybody so i know like some tech companies may not want to price much with amazon because sometimes on amazon they're different sellers i don't know which is authentic or not right but that's just an example i'm not saying that but that's just an example so some companies don't price much with certain companies so find out which ones the price match with and then maybe to get it for less so for example you could also like call apollo and be like oh you guys sell airports for three dollars um but i saw a target that i could get it for one dollar can you guys price match that for me see and then even if they can't give you for the amount at target you may be able to get it for a less amount than what they actually sell it for so that's the way price matching works and then like i said coupon to be able to get coupons so like i have gotten coupons for um shea moisture so like a jar of shampoo i think it's 15 and i had a coupon for like two or three dollars so when i took the coupon to the cashier with my shampoo they took the three dollars off and then i paid less for the shampoo basically that's where coupons work so that's something i also benefit from and then save some money and the good thing is one thing about money is it's little cents and dollars here that make a lot right so you're able to save a little here and there and there then you'll be able to at the end of like a year or six months see how much you've been able to save for yourself so yeah the next point i'll say is sharing liabilities so for example like where i stay if i'm able to get a roommate we share the bills i'm able to save more or like my netflix account if i have a friend who also wants to get netflix instead of the friend getting that separate nexus app count i'll say why don't we share these netflix and then i give you my password right and then the two of us can benefit from that so you have your screen i have my screen whatever i want to watch um or like even the internet so like if i get a roommate instead of how it gets in her own internet i would just be like you know what let's split the b the bill on the internet instead so that way we both save i don't know if that makes sense so that's another good way to save money um sharing liabilities the next point i would say is paying credit off as soon as possible so basically credit and views so like when you take our money from your credit card pay it off as soon as possible when you when a bill comes in paid off as soon as possible many times when you leave the time to elapse interest us to build on it and then you're marked down as having bad credit or maybe no bad credit but it just shows that you're not credit worthy and all that goes back into your credit report and when it goes back into your credit report it looks like you're not creditworthy so all those things are to be able to pay your bills on time you're able to pay off your credit on time then it's reflect on your credit score as being paid timely and then that way it builds in your credit score how many building your credit score your life is better basically so you are paying credit off as soon as possible once you pay them off you're able to save a lot more and even when you're unable to pay it off sometimes you can walk around it so i know like phone companies and internet companies sometimes there's situations where you could call them and be like oh i can't pay this full amount right now can we pay it in installment can i split it and pay half of it now and then pay half later you know that kind of situation and then the very last point i'll say is living within your means so if you can't afford it don't do it okay even if you have the money in your credit card don't do it and i'm speaking to myself as well when i say this just don't do it just leave it in your means and yeah with time everything will get better the more you work hard the more you save the more you invest things will get better and then be able to afford the things you actually want i hope this video helps somebody um out there thank you so much for staying with me and
