are worthy of my praise god i will give you all my worship and i will give you all my praise it's you alone that i long to worship and you alone that is worthy of my days [Music] we're in a series on the gospel of luke and today in luke 5 you have these four encounters four different people radically different people but they all meet jesus and they all walk away changed and different as you're listening at home um we've created a kind of a guide and so every chapter every week is going to be a different chapter so if you're at home you can pick this up or online you can find it online or if you're live here on sunday and what it is it's broken down into a daily reading and a daily practice and you might find it helpful and we mentioned this in the last few weeks we've also got a journal that we've been making available and so whatever helps you track with us as we walk through the gospel so if you have your bibles luke chapter 5 this morning this encounter with these four different characters luke 5 starts like this um one day as jesus was standing by the lake of gnesserat the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of god so jesus is teaching he saw at the water's edge two boats left there by fishermen who were washing their nets he got into one of the boats the one belonging to simon and asked him to put out a little bit from the shore and then he sat down and taught the people from the boat so you can imagine you know these are days where there is no amplification there's no sound systems and things like that and so jesus gets into the boat and we've all had the experience of sound carrying across the water so it's sort of a strategic thing there's a focal point he's out in the water we don't know how far but he can't be pressed and swallowed up by a crowd and so he just sits in the boat and teaches the people that are on the shore he borrows simon's boat they sat down and he teaches the people from the boat and when he finished speaking he says to simon simon why don't you put out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch simon's a fisherman by trade obviously he's been doing this a while this is his life his uh his life his living and simon answered and said you know master we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything you can imagine all the just imagine their mindset one is they've been out all night okay jesus you want to borrow the boat to teach fine but actually we'd like to get home and go to bed we'd like to and we haven't caught anything and so jesus come on really we're going to go out one more time and we've been out all night and we haven't caught anything and now remember you're the rabbi we're the fishermen so kind of you know really but because you say so i will let down the nets and when they had done so they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break and so they signaled their partners in the other boats to come and help them and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink can you imagine the number of fish that it would take to sink the boats had to be a pretty significant number i would guess just saying without doing injustice of scripture they'd never caught anything like that and that had been the catch of their lives and imagine in that moment maybe what was going through their heads like did it take did they instantly know what was going on like this we're witnessing a miracle or was there a few moments of lag time of like wait a minute wait a minute what's going on here where are all these fish coming from or maybe there was a kind of an opportunist sort of a moment like hey we should go into business with this guy we could we could call it you know simon and sons or well actually we should probably make you an equal partner we're going to call it jesus and simon industries or something like you know must have been like this opportunist moment like they began to sink there were so many fish and then peter when he saw this he fell at jesus's knee and he said get away from me lord i'm a sinful man simon went from being shocked first of all went from being maybe mildly aggravated jesus you're going to ask me to do something i've been doing all night and i know how to do better to oh my gosh this is the catch of our lives to oh my gosh this is god in the boat this is god in the boat with us you see that this is like the intro luke has many more chapters to go this is at the beginning of jesus ministry where you're going to see in these chapters these next two he begins to call his disciples to come follow but simon is this key this this key person that falls to his knees and said lord get away from me i'm a sinful man for he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of the fish the word astonished i looked it up it's an interesting word we we would be i guess our terms would be we were blown away right but they were astonished the word astonish means they were just captured they were the whole thing just captured them just enveloped their minds they couldn't think of anything else because of the catch and so were james and john the sons of zebedee simon's partners and then jesus says to simon don't be afraid from now on you're going to fish for people so they pulled their boats up on shore left everything and followed him so this this series of four encounters starts with this one this simon james and john and so forth this encounter with this miraculous catch of fish but that's this particular vignette closes with those words so they left everything and followed him the invitation here that jesus is offering to these men is i'm going to make you fishers of men you're making a living which is fine there's nothing wrong with making a living but i'm going to help you make alive you're going to fish for men and if you think about it this gospel this particular gospel the gospel of luke these men who were with him went on to tell that story and they in fact their lives impacted countless millions upon millions of people over the last 2000 years you and i are all seated here today because those men left behind their nets and followed him followed follow it as a verb it's not a noun i've always been bothered by the idea that christian is a word it's a noun on a t-shirt or a bumper sticker or something like that are you a christian and it sounds almost like a it can sound like a maybe a label or a political party because it's like it it has this connotation of just just being in a group but what jesus is calling these guys to do is to follow now look at the pattern if you can for just a minute what just look at the this exchange we just read and think about it what it means right here for peter to follow first of all it took some honest humility some radical humility lord get away from me i am a sinner peter realized the gulf between his own personal life and who was calling him to follow lord i'm a sinner so there's a level of humility what does it mean to be a follower it starts with a level of humility you know if i was lost in the woods if i had gone hiking or something and got caught in a snowstorm or got caught in some kind of you know terrible thing and i literally was lost and someone flew in to rescue me somebody in a helicopter or a four-wheel drive or something and they found me wandering in the woods almost dead hypothermia had set in i was starving i had no idea i was wet and i was cold you know only an idiot would argue with the guide the guide would say listen i'm here to help you i'm here if you'll just follow me i'll lead you back home i'll save your life only a stubborn fool would argue with a guide peter recognizes lord i may know fishing but i don't know life i may know fishing but it just dawned on me your god and i think that speaks to many of our lives doesn't it like we kind of treated jesus like a like a noun or we we kind of treated it like a word or but all of a sudden there's this realization no no i need to get up and follow i need to put feet to what i think is my faith it requires a new paradigm it requires a new paradigm following jesus requires a new paradigm lord because you say so because you say so i think many times we find ourselves arguing with god because he's asking us to do something that we don't understand or that we don't like and so we resist it and then we find out later oh actually that was a great idea just like this story put out into deep water lord really and then all of a sudden lord that was a brilliant idea because we realized on the other side of the miracle oh he was right after all following jesus requires us leaving one thing to pick up another they pulled their boats on the shore they left everything and they followed him it means leaving one thing and picking up another you'll find this and the word we would use to describe this a maybe a theological word or a bible word would be the word repentance i can't i can't follow my own desires i can't just do what i want to do and do what god calls me to do those two things many many times almost always are incompatible it's not that god takes away all the joy it takes away any fun or anything i do is automatically wrong it's just he's the author of life and so if the author of life if the author of the story calls me to follow it would make sense that he would know where the story is headed right so it means leaving behind when my wife and i we were just we just become believers in our mid-20s back quite a few years ago now and um we had gone to a missions conference we were probably just a couple years old in the lord we we knew almost nothing about christianity i knew nothing about discipleship we were just reading our bibles and and for the first time really in our lives reading our bibles together in our mid-20s and we go to this missions conference and there was a group there they had a brochure and it was a brochure recruiting people to ministry to the mission field in other countries and i'll never forget i took this brochure there was a bunch of stuff on the table and i grabbed a bunch of things but this particular brochure was challenging whoever was reading it to consider following jesus to the mission field and it had a picture on the front and a line and the line was this and they left their boats on the shore left everything and followed him it was this passage we just quoted and on the picture was this picture of an empty boat with the sails kind of rolled up and laying there the oars on the ground and an empty boat on an empty beach and then they had added this line to the scripture they followed him they added this line just like that just like that just like that and i remember we had that on our refrigerator for the better part of a year and i would walk by and that phrase stuck with me they got up and followed jesus they went to work that morning thinking okay back to fishing six days a week or however many days a week good jews they probably worked six days and took the seventh day as a sabbath and they went home from work that day with a total change of occupation but a total change of paradigm we're going to follow this guy well that's the other thing following jesus means to learn that you're not going to always know the way my wife and i answered the call to missions just shortly after that brochure living on my refrigerator for the better part part of a year just like that and one day i felt like god challenged us to follow him just like that we had a hundred questions about how it was all going to work we had a young two-year-old son had a business had all kinds of things we were just doing normal life and then god one day said just like that now as i know as north americans we love to plan and we love to know what's going to happen you know we love to know a year out and so forth and isn't it crazy this coveteer has just turned all this upside down and and the incredible insecurity and the and some of the confusion and some of the tension that it's produced between people i think a lot of it's rooted in this idea that you know i thought we were in control here is it interesting that peter and james and john they were in control of their lives supposedly every day we know where we're going we know where our boats are we know where the fish are we're going to go out and fish and we're going to just kind of make a living and all of a sudden all that's taken away and jesus says just follow me well lord where are we going lord how long what's it going to no just just follow me you know that kind of idea is is just so congruent with the kingdom of god because following is a faith thing this is why jesus said when you pray say lord give me my daily bread well could i just get enough could i put enough bread in the freezer for a month lord no no i just i just like to give you daily bread i promise i'll be there you just you just follow me require following jesus requires a new way of learning to do life these guys had to learn an entirely different occupation i'm going to make you fishers of men can you imagine when they first heard that i mean we read it with 2 000 years of backstory history because we know what they went on to do but in the moment they must have thought what i mean we get the fish thing but fishers of men like what in the world they were going to have to learn a whole new way of life following jesus requires that we learn a new way of doing life it's not that it's absolutely a hundred percent different it's just like learning to do life in a different kingdom all of us here most people watching this for the most part whether at home or here you all have a driver's license how long have you had a driver's license 25 years a quarter of a century right you have been driving a car at some point 25 or six years ago you took a test and the guy was in the car with you and there was probably a fair amount of nervousness and you had to do this and left and right and park and all these kind and then they gave you a car and said congratulations you're a legal driver and so for 25 years you have been driving your car all over the place in town road trips across the country uh maybe people drive for a living you know you're a taxi driver a truck driver so driving is second nature almost remember that but you remember the driving tests do you remember how incredibly nerve-wracking that was you were just like you didn't want any noise or any distraction you just were you know focused on this and there's this guy next to you says okay turn left and you're like okay turn signal left okay you know everything was just clunky and sort of just full of tension but you know after 25 years man you and i get in the car and and we're going to drive to portland or we're going to run up to in-n-out burger and i and i jump in the car with you and and you're in that car and you're you know starting the car you're looking in the mirrors you're putting it in drive putting on a seat belt turning on turning off the radio we're having a conversation maybe you're drinking a coffee as you get on the road you know why it's so easy because it's become second nature it's crazy you can do it without thinking you're not you're not self-conscious about turning or turn signals or breaking or anything like it just you don't even realize you're doing it and you do it a hundred times in the drive so in the kingdom of god he catches us right where we are and says okay you know how to fish but now i'm going to teach you how to fish for men you know how to get up and do life for yourself and now i'm going to teach you how to follow me you know how to drive a car but now we're just going to take your knowledge and your second nature and we're going to just put you in a different kingdom anybody here ever been to the united kingdom or to australia where they drive on the other side not the wrong side but for my australian friends but the other side of the road and all of a sudden with all of your 25 years experience and second nature what you know so well you're right back to the day you got your driver's license with all the tension i know because i've experienced this my wife and i lived in jamaica we worked in jamaica with with a missions organization and i remember the nerve-wracking experience of driving in a you know in one of those united kingdom nations jamaica and and realizing i'm driving on the other side of the road there's cars coming at me on the other side the even the shifter and the everything is upside down backwards well that's the new kingdom i know how to do life i know how to do money i know how to do sexuality i know how to do all these things in this other kingdom but all of a sudden i'm in a new kingdom i don't lose those basic necessities but i have to relearn a whole new life you know following jesus is an invitation to partner with god and in the end to be a friend of god following jesus is this invitation by jesus hey i want you to work with me i'm not going to be your business partner i'm going to invite you to be my partner because i know where i'm going i think sometimes i look at jesus like jesus if you would just partner with me in what i think we would be a success and jesus said maybe but i think i'd rather you partnered with me and this will end well i don't know how much time we spend arguing with jesus about that but you end up being a friend of god when you follow jesus like like peter followed he ended up more than being just a fisher of men and a great guy he became known as a friend of god and you know if you're a friend of god your life's going to bear fruit if you're a friend of god people are going to be drawn to you sometimes inexplicably what is it that you have if jesus is a verb following is a verb to you people are going to be struck with that what do you mean why did you do that wait you gave away money wait you forgave somebody who didn't deserve to be forgiven wait what's making what makes you tick and they're going to want to know why what makes you go like that so two other quick stories all in the gospel luke chapter five so while jesus is in one of the towns a man comes along who is covered with leprosy and when he saw jesus he fell with his face to the ground and begged him lord if you're willing make me clean you can make me clean leprosy was a disfiguring disease in those days with no cure and lepers were just outcasts they were they were made to live outside the city outside loss of if you were a leper your life was over your family life was over your hopes of marriage were over having children being a functioning member your life was basically over and jesus reached out his hand and touched the man jesus did something totally counter um counter culture counter counter israeli because holy people didn't touch unclean people he reached out and he touches this man and he says these words i am willing i am willing be clean and immediately the leprosy left him and then jesus ordered him don't tell anyone go show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that moses commanded as the cleansing for the testimony and now the news spread about jesus all the more so great crowds came to hear him and he healed them of their sicknesses but jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed so this encounter is this guy that's helpless and hopeless knowing he's an untouchable and yet jesus reaches out and he touches him and then this third to the last the second to the last one day jesus is teaching mark i mean luke carries on and now it says they're bringing the sick from every village of galilee and from judea and jerusalem and the power of the lord was with jesus to heal the sick can you imagine now peter who's just begun to follow watching all this unfold man the lepers are getting healed man there's people coming from everywhere and they're being healed the power of the lord remember the go if your mind would go back for last week or the week before there's this prophetic utterance on john the baptist hey there's one coming who's going to baptize you with the holy spirit and with fire and all of a sudden this person is there in living color and it says some men carrying came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat tried to take him into the house to lay them down before jesus of course remember the story they couldn't find a way to do it so what they did was they got up on the roof and they broke open the roof and they lowered the man on the mat through the tiles in the middle of the crowd imagine how outrageous and how this just disturbing this was that they're in the middle of a teaching session and whoever's house that was you realize they're destroying my roof what in the world is going on up there stop everything and all of a sudden these guys are lowering this man on a like a stretcher down through the roof and here he comes right down in front of jesus can you imagine just how like outrageous that would be like what are you doing and um when jesus saw their faith he said now it's interesting here he said friends friend he says your sins are forgiven now we're going to this is a little turning point in this chapter friend your sins are forgiven he doesn't go to his physical condition right away he looks at this man he sees something that no one else maybe this guy's been on social assistance he's only getting by with a little help from his friends there has to be a measure of compassion or maybe pity for this guy because the poor guy can't walk and again like the leper you're pretty much resigned to a life of begging you're resigned to a life of poverty you're an outcast and jesus reaches past his physical condition says your sins are forgiven and the pharisees and teachers of the law began to think to themselves who is this fellow who speaks such blasphemy who can forgive sins but god alone jesus knew what they were thinking and he said well which is easier say your sins are forgiven or get up and walk but i want you to know that the son of god has authority on the earth to forgive sins so he said to the paralyzed man i tell you get up take your mat and go home if you're the pharisee sitting there the pharisees are consumed with who is this guy what right does he have and then right before their eyes this man in by a miraculous power gets up takes his mat and he heads home he stands up he goes home praising god everyone is amazed they were filled with awe and said we've seen remarkable things today but something has shifted in the heart of the pharisee now that they realize this jesus is a threat to our to our religious institution and so the last story is the story of matthew the tax collector after this jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of levi sitting at his tax booth now what's interesting is you're going to see the book ends in the very first story jesus grabs this man named peter who's just kind of a common fisherman and says peter follow me this is going to be awesome i know you don't understand peter but just follow me but now he taps somebody named matthew who is also a jew and he says matthew follow me and levi matthew levi got up left everything and followed him and then this levi held a great banquet for jesus at his house and a crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them but the pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples and said why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners tax collectors were in a category of all their own they were the most despised people of the jews they weren't just the enemies of the jews they were the traitors of their own people they were they were the leeches they were living off of their own people they would collect taxes from the jews on behalf of the romans and then they would skim it off the top and if they wanted to extort you they would collect more because they had the authority to do that so they were just these hated individuals and jesus calls them that phrase they left everything and followed him is the same in both in both of these stories they just get up they walk away from their occupation they walk away from their living and they choose a life it's interesting in verse 29 back in that story matthew throws a party for all of his friends and it's kind of his uh his coming out party hey you know what you guys you all know me right you can imagine matthew has been making a living skimming money scamming his own countrymen and he decides to leave it all behind and follow jesus and rather than sort of do it in the middle of the night and kind of just go to another place and move out of town where no one knows his background no he says i'm going to throw a party and i'm just going to make this announcement hey you guys you know what remember me it's me matthew i'm done now i'm sorry for what i did and i'm going to follow jesus i'm going to follow this guy here i don't know where it's going to lead but isn't it amazing following jesus means that our past no longer defines us you know matthew wrote one of the gospels if you look in the gospel matthew matthew gives an account right in the very first chapters of these are jesus disciples and you see simon peter james john and then he says pete matthew says and then there was matthew the tax collector matthew doesn't kind of erase that well yeah he kind of had a shady past but it's just matthew no matthew lets everybody know you know what don't forget i was matthew the tax collector i was matthew the tax collector just in case you're wondering what happened to me so matthew isn't ashamed of his past matthew is empowered because now his story empowers others his life becomes his story becomes like a missional bridge man if if jesus could save a tax collector if if jesus could get a tax collector to follow him i want to know more you know some of you are here watching and you're thinking man bruce if you knew my story if you knew the details the gnarly details of my story the sordid past i have sometimes i think we're more impressed with our story than we are with god's story for us sometimes i think we're more impressed with our dysfunction and our ability to mess up our lives than we are with god's ability to re-write our lives and matthew throws a party and says let me tell you what happened not everybody's going to understand following jesus because it doesn't make any sense in the natural it's the upside down kingdom it's the it's the other kingdom where they drive on the other side of the road but matthew wasn't ashamed he wasn't condemned by his past he wasn't defined by his past in fact he saw this following of jesus as a bridge hey listen i was just like you i may not have done all the same things you did but listen i was i was selfish i was this i was that i was miserable i was condemned this following jesus changed everything and when they complained jesus said listen to the pharisees this is the last verse he says it's not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick i've not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance he's speaking to the pharisees in the room this is sarcasm this is like this is like satire right here he's saying oh you you got me wrong i'm sorry you guys i thought oh i'm not called to heal the people who don't need healing no i've come to call the sick i've come to heal the sick he was in a sense trying to get them you know that's what that's what sarcasm is in a way it's kind of a mirror we throw up right in front of people we do we do this all the time in our kind of our exchange oh aren't you the smart one well what we're really saying is you're not very smart are you but we're sort of throwing it in their face and jesus is throwing it up in their face oh i'm sorry you got this wrong i haven't come to heal you because you don't need healing matthew matthew needed something he says um he finishes and he says listen no one pours new wine into old wineskins otherwise the wine will burst the skins the wine will run out and the skins will be ruined no no new wine must be poured into new wineskins no one after drinking old wine wants the new for they say man yeah no one's gonna want our lives are these new wine that god is doing in you and i he's not done yet but that new wine requires new containers that's this renovation process matthew had been deformed by his life by his sin and selfishness and his occupation jesus reclaims him that day at that booth hey come follow me and then the following of jesus reforms his life it shapes his life there's an entirely new wine skin but those people watching they couldn't enter into that joy jesus says matthew i'm going to take you from just making a living to making a life matthew rejoiced but some people in that room just couldn't enter into that joy why couldn't they do that why couldn't they enter in because they were stuck they were stuck in the old stuck in the old wine skin so as you're watching here today or sitting here today man this following jesus is an invitation whosoever will may come come follow me he promises great reward but he doesn't promise an absolute easy life or an answer to every question we'll ever have but what he promises is this he said i will never leave you or forsake you he said later on in the gospel of john if you abide in me and i abide in you your life will bear much fruit he promises fruitfulness he promises companionship he promises to be there when everybody else forsakes us i'm not sure why we would fight with that there's something in our human nature that just resists that jesus i know what i'm doing but like peter we get to this place in our lives where we fall down and say lord i am a lost individual i'm ready i'm going to walk away from my boat and follow you just like that we're going to share this lord's supper together as is our customs we finish here today and if you're watching you can grab the elements and gather around and prepare to do that and um we're just going to take a few moments to uh to prepare our hearts and to get ready [Music] yeah so um the lord's supper is something that happened at the end of jesus's life we read today from relatively the beginning but at the end of his life he takes these elements and he said these words he said listen you're the ones that have stuck with me through the trials and so they had followed jesus to this point not knowing where they again we read through the lens of history but they had no idea that he was about to be crucified and he just says i've eagerly desired to do this with you and you followed me through my trials but they didn't know what what what fallen was really going to mean until the next few days the next few months as history unfolded and so um we gather every time we do this and we take together because um we're just making a statement that's just a simple limited vision statement lord i'm a follower and i'll go where you lead me i don't have to know all the answers it might not be comfortable but i'm a follower and i take this and jesus said as often as you do this i want you to remember me and so father we just um take this cup and this this little piece of bread and uh we remember that on that night these men had followed you for three years or so they'd follow you to the upper room and you were going to go to the cross and then they were going to follow you until the day they died some of them even themselves laying down their lives to follow you so this is in a way it's a little piece of bread and a little cup of juice but this represents sustenance our daily bread you're the strength of our lives you're the provision of our lives you're our life and so we take this together remembering you your life and remembering that we're following you not the other way around we just take in jesus name so in the sermon bruce honed in on four different interactions that jesus had four different people so if you are with a group i'd love for you to take time and and look at those so go ahead and read through luke 5 together or if you're by yourself do the same read through luke 5 and then look at each one of those stories and then ask these questions like what was it that each one of them left behind sometimes it's easy like physically they walked away and left something behind but there was something that was left behind for each one of them and then what was it that they had to relearn in response and just like bruce was talking about the kingdoms and the new kingdom what's that piece of relearning that they entered into so there was an action and a decision that they made right then and then there was a process that they entered into and then take a few minutes and just ask god where you're at in that are you at a point where jesus is inviting you and you need to make a decision or are you at a point where there's something that he's working in you and building you and you're relearning sometimes that means unlearning something so that you can relearn it and if you want to jump into what we're doing to go along with that we've got this little booklet i think bruce mentioned it but you can get it online just go up to the sermon on the website and it's right there and you there's a group activity this question that i just asked is in there it's kind of the first thing that you'll do with your group and there's a few more and then there's four days of applications just to dive a little bit deeper and another piece of this is we want to hear from each other's stories it's incredible when you see what god has done in someone else we're called to encourage each other so if you are willing to share your story with us there's a testimony link on the website click that share your testimony with us we're going to start looking for some testimonies to make to turn into videos to so that we can share with the congregation don't worry we won't share your your story without your permission but i encourage you to be bold share what god has done in your life as an encouragement to others so i hope you guys have a great week and we look forward to seeing you soon bye [Music] [Music] [Music]
