information and keep it from going public an extraordinary charge to even contemplate giving the size of Florida's vulnerable population late last Friday the engineer of Florida's so-called kovat 19 dashboard was suddenly removed from her post the move quickly sparked backlash from critics who say Florida's government is withholding important coronavirus data from its residents here's an example of what that dashboard looked like many states display very similar visual guides on their government websites the Florida database even received praise last month from the White House coronavirus task force coordinator deborah birx the news outlet Florida today describes the database this way quote the dashboard has been a one-stop shop for researchers the media and the public to access the download tables of Kovac cases testing and death data to analyze freely it has been widely hailed as a shining example of transparency and accessibility there are believed to be new outbreaks in Arizona meatpacking plants but the state isn't releasing that information either and we also don't know how many Arizona nursing homes have corona virus outbreaks right now or how many residents and nursing homes have died from the virus because the state won't release that information either but that explanation for why they're not releasing that data on on the nursing homes that has evolved in a weird way their first trip for explaining that was last month the governor and the state's top health official cited the federal medical privacy law HIPPA HIPAA as the reason why they couldn't tell the public where nursing home outbreaks were happening that that makes no sense because the federal HIPPA laws about personal information releasing the names of nursing homes without breaks is not personal information two weeks after that they were asked again this time they gave a different reason this time they said it wasn't the federal privacy law they said it was a state privacy law that prohibited releasing the information and they would only tell the public which nursing homes had coronavirus outbreaks if a judge ordered them to do so that at least gave everybody a way forward the Arizona and for other media outlets sued the state to get the names of nursing homes that have outbreaks and the number of deaths at each nursing home the state's fighting that as well but now they're doing so in court with a brand new third totally random excuse state of Arizona is now arguing in court that they cannot and will not release data on outbreaks and deaths in the state's nursing homes because it would be in their words bad for business it would be bad publicity for the nursing homes that have corona virus outbreaks quote the department and this court cannot ignore the reality that disclosure of the records at issue is likely to cause substantial harm to these businesses and their residents really more harm than them dying from corona virus with nobody knowing where the outbreaks are on the theme of sticking one's head in the sand and pretending that if you hide the data you hide the problem here's a doozy from the state of Ohio it was a big deal last month you might remember the reporting it seemed like we're promising news from a public health perspective when last month state officials in Ohio said that they would test everybody in the state's prisons they started that testing in Ohio and they immediately found some of the highest infection rates anywhere in the country at the Marion Correctional Institution in Marion Ohio more than two thousand prisoners tested positive nearly 80 percent of all the prisoners there at Pickaway Correctional Institution more than 1,500 prisoners are positive they're about three-quarters of the prison population at Franklin Medical Center in Ohio more than a hundred prisoners tested positive they're about one in every five so where they were doing this Universal testing in Ohio prisons they kept finding outbreaks and now it looks like there might be another one but after this pattern of uncovering huge outbreaks and all the tests and all the prisons they were testing Ohio has apparently decided they are done with all of this testing mishegoss now this is from the Columbus Dispatch this week quote Belmont Correctional Institution is emerging as the state's latest prison hot spot for the corona virus as kovat 19 cases soar there but the public may never know it because the state has stopped the mass testing that showed prisons and Marion and Pickaway counties were the kovat 19 hotspots in
