hi this is libby kaiser senior editor of clearancejobs.com welcome to this week's security clearance news update today we are bringing you a question from the mailbag so you have questions about the security clearance process we have answers this week um somebody asked me about why a recruiter would need to ask for your social security number in order to verify your security clearance and if it's okay to give that information out to a recruiter um first part yes recruiters still use social security numbers to verify um security clearances within j pass j pass being phased out now transitioning into dis defense information systems for security so that's rolling out as we speak um we'll be moving from j pass to disc but in those systems of record they still use social security numbers what can candidates do to make sure that the recruiter contacting them really needs that information a couple of options first you can ask for the recruiter's contact information and ask if you can contact them back via their company website or verify their identity with somebody with their company if we're talking about like a phishing campaign somebody just searching for your information or your number they're probably not going the extra step of having somebody waiting in the wings within a company um office to verify that information so it's a good way to just verify that somebody's with a company one thing i've seen that as advice for what to do that i would not recommend is saying hey just go look and see if they have a linkedin profile as we've written about frequently and even just in the past week at clearancejobs.com whether it's iran russia china fake recruiter profiles on linkedin is one of the primary ways they're targeting cleared candidates clearly criminal activity can originate there too just because you can find somebody online does not mean that they're legitimate it's worth noting the clearance jobs website is not crawled your information is not released out there to the web and also if you find a recruiter or recruiter contact information on clearance jobs um you know it's it's a secure place because only us-based companies can use clearance jobs so ask if they have a profile on clearance jobs verify through clearance jobs but don't just trust that if you can find them online they must be legit the other option you have is to ask for their facility security officer's information or ask their facility security officer to contact you it's just making them go through another hoop in order to verify your contact information you're still giving out information over the phone that you might not prefer to but unfortunately as of now that really is the best way for them to verify your information and if you can find a way that you feel comfortable with securely providing that information phone is generally the best way to do it and again as long as you've verified who the person is you're um you're speaking with that is currently the the way that a lot of recruiters use so but it's worth taking a few extra steps again i mean they're having their fso contact you or reaching out and verifying their um they're who they say they are based on contacting their company or reaching out in some way like that and again jpass moving to dis we'll have more about that on clearance jobs in the next coming weeks for more security clearance news and information visit us at clearancejobs.com
