ah what can we say you can just feel in the air the usa is on edge right now here we are in 2021 a time when we hoped things would get better but we still have so many things to figure out health care is a mess big cities are dying there's homeless people all over the place we're politically divided no matter where you stand politically you have to admit americans need a big hug right now but we have to social distance so we can't do that of course there's good places to live in here areas that seem to be safe and happy but we're not going to talk about that today no way let's twist the knife even deeper we're going to visit the worst places to live in the country these days and not hold back on anything it'll be a true under the cover no makeup glance at what's wrong with the country this year using a handful of our states as examples now whether you live in a good state or a bad state you should probably be aware of what's happening in this country that way you know where you should move or where you should stay right now some of the states we're going to talk about are going to be surprises and some of them are going to be not a surprise but let's just get started and rip the band-aid off right now it won't hurt that bad [Music] no there's a lot more to see like georgia georgia's moved up on this list since last year well because it's not doing very well right now now to determine the worst states to live in 2021 we looked at a number of metrics that most folks would find desirable and then we flipped it around so the places on this list are going to be those with a lot of crime low performing schools large pockets of poverty and unhealthy residents among other things georgia ranks fifth lowest in health and safety for example that includes access to health care and the overall health of its populace crime wise georgia as a whole is far above average and the main reasons atlanta as the saying goes georgia is atlanta and the rest of the state 60 of the state's 10 million residents live in the atlanta metro area shootings and murders in atlanta rival places like philadelphia atlanta is also in the top 25 for murders in this country and it's three times higher than the national average for overall crime here car thefts are also a huge problem here and atlanta traffic is among the worst in the world if you can believe that georgia as a whole ranks fifth worst in children's access to health care eighth lowest in socioeconomics and seventh lowest in education but georgia has set itself up as a low wage low tax low service state which means reductions in education have meant poor performing schools and less people going to college and the smaller communities away from atlanta are losing people or not growing very quickly more than half of georgia's small towns have lost people since 2010. georgia was actually called the worst state in which to be poor in america too it's just sad meanwhile despite all the problems in states like georgia places that desperately need health education and gain crackdowns and better jobs our current administration wants to send four billion dollars to central america to help stabilize things they're brilliant we're struggling here in so many places but we want to help other countries get better i just don't get it but we should balance the bad with the good let's look in the closet and see what's good about georgia ooh georgia has some cool things in its closet wow so pretty it's happy in here georgia ranks 12th in the country for economic growth so that's good they're getting better and georgia ranks 11th for population growth too so that's good maybe georgia can turn some things around and get on the right track and get off this list and there's so much so much more to see like missouri now this is a dangerous poor place where there isn't a lot of opportunity outside of its two metro areas kansas city and st louis but those places are ru uh crime wise st louis is pretty much the most dangerous place you can live when it comes to murder rates though a lot of that's in a little pocket on the city's north side but it's terrible the poverty rate missouri is 14 which is the ninth highest in the country the minimum wage in missouri is 8.60 an hour but the living wage in missouri for a family with two kids is 26 an hour so missouri couples working in low-wage jobs make about a third less than they need to be comfortable not good missouri's poverty has been a real head scratcher after all states like west virginia mississippi ohio and kentucky saw their industries collapse resulting in spikes in poverty over the last 50 years but missouri saw no such industrial collapse many smaller communities here have never recovered from the great recession in 2008 that might be one reason missouri has so many broken homes now tennessee is similar to missouri demographically but look how their economy's grown in comparison missouri some people say it's been a result of low taxes education reform and a friendly business climate in tennessee maybe missouri should mimic their neighbors of the south what do you think did you hear that i hear something knocking in the closet teddy bears and unicorns missouri has teddy bears and unicorns no but there's some good news here for starters it ranks eighth for air and water quality so that's good missouri also ranks 11th for agriculture production so we should all thank our farmers for their hard work and people in missouri drive trucks like this seriously it's a thing now seems silly but missouri people think it's cool so we'll let them have it south carolina has taken some knocks over the years and it remains a challenge state many ways while there's a lot of pretty beach communities and places where the wealthy can roam a lot of the states very poor and dangerous south carolina is the fourth most dangerous state overall when you factor in both violent and property crimes the state's main attraction myrtle beach has become untenable for families who want peace and quiet north charleston is dealing with a crime epidemic and colombia the state capital is a place struggling with lots of poverty too as a whole south carolina has the nation's ninth lowest income levels life expectancy here like many other parts of the deep south is lower than most areas although people do live to be about 77 here which is not terrible they die at 75 in west virginia south carolina has the eighth most broken homes has the fourth worst credit scores the ninth most foreclosures has the 10th lowest incomes and is 12th highest for poverty geez we're just piling it on aren't we sorry south carolina now let's look in the happy magic closet and see if there's anything good in there mappy what are you doing in south carolina's closet that's kind of weird hi nick did you know south carolina was the fourth worst place in america for online dating i did not know that i never thought i would ever know that although that might be a good thing maybe they just have morals down there mappy which states the worst for online dating arkansas who's the best new hampshire okay none of that makes sense to me thanks mappy not really not too far away is the state of alabama i think we're going to be here for quite a bit moving forward alabama gets the double eight it's the eighth poorest and eighth highest for crime it's also 10th highest in unemployment rates though from what i hear alabama higher ups have been working hard to attract new business especially in the auto industry but man i saw alabama first hand last month and what i saw was really eye-opening this is just some random neighborhood in dothan that i drove through dothan's the seventh most populated city in the state this was literally the first place i turned into when i got to alabama to kind of look around for a little bit it's not an anomaly though here's a neighborhood in montgomery just a mile from downtown there this place was even worse get this the un visited parts of the usa a few years back and the representative said he was shocked at what he saw in rural alabama saying it looked like nothing he had ever seen in a first world country raw sewage flowing from homes diseases typically found in third world countries abject poverty-stricken hoods like this i mean look at this there's a sign warning crackheads to keep away here in the usa looks like something you see in south america somewhere and yet here we are sending billions overseas to assist third world countries when parts of our country are third world it's pathetic of course with every bad there's good alabama's happy closet has some hope and joy in it this feels better more people in alabama go to church than any other state so that's good and they have a lot of tough outdoorsmen here which for some reason look like me that's weird now we mentioned arkansas being the worst state in the country for online dating this study looked at everything from stds gross to how much money people can spend on dates and how successful people are poor arkansas folks can't get a date but it's not to see economy that's in the [ __ ] here though crime in arkansas is the fourth highest in the country led by places like little rock and pine bluff it's an extremely unhealthy state that ranks third and infant mortality rates and fifth worst overall for health including huge numbers of obese residents the state also has the least number of college graduates per capita but with some hard work a college degree doesn't always mean anything these days anymore and it's really expensive so we can't hold that against them too much right now what's interesting about arkansas is that the natural state ranked 10th in the nation for happiest states according to a national poll that was conducted last year so they're content good for them i guess now let's look in their closet for more good news oh god little rock shut the door jesus sadly the state of oklahoma is in a bad place i mean there's great people here just like in all the other states we talked about so far health-wise it's really bad oklahoma ranks fifth lowest for quality of public health and it has terrible scores for infant mortality obesity suicide number of people insured and for mental health the only category oklahoma isn't in the bottom 10 for is smoking rates and it's 14 for that and to top it off oklahomans eat the least number of fruits and vegetables of anywhere else in the country come on guys mix in a salad every now and then without meat right oklahoma has america's fourth lowest home values too which means it's affordable but it also means there's very little demand currently and considering that 43 of oakey's carry guns it might be surprising this state has america's fifth highest property crime rate another interesting fact oklahoma has the most women in their prison system than any other place in america some tough broads in the sooner state i gotta say okay so let's look in their closet hey it's all fruit and vegetables that's where they went oklahoma you guys can't hide all your fruits and veggies in here you think we wouldn't find it come on get in here and eat let's get you healthy i'll grab the ranch i love eating fruits and vegetables they taste good i know you do little mappy kid maybe you can set a good example and clean that plate off tonight at the dinner table and get a gold star on your chart hey louisiana's a mess currently why education is a big problem the schools are bad and education isn't a part of their culture here even warehouse jobs and car manufacturing plants need skilled workers with some sort of formal education and louisiana simply doesn't have those workers which means businesses won't move there either and there are a lot of big cities in this state that are vibrant and exciting with new growth and ideas for a lot of people in louisiana it's a sense of fatalism it is what it is they say all we can do is pray not much we can do there's little sense of urgency in this state the oil industry isn't gonna keep you guys afloat forever seems that voting down here is more ceremonial than anything else nothing really changes which sucks the bayou state has some of the highest number of broken homes of all states it's third in crime third in uninsured residents third in poverty fourth in income levels and louisianans are the third least educated people in america they also have the most obese residents and the second worst diets in the country too the kids are hungry the adults are fat and the teens are pregnant do we even want to look in their closet yep it's all cheeseburgers cigarettes and booze okay we're not looking in any more closets sorry it's just too much information and there's so much more to see west virginia isn't really much better overall either a lot of the problem is people are either leaving for better opportunities or dying or not having kids at all west virginia has the fewest families with young kids in the nation the number of people having kids here per year has decreased 17 over the last 30 years the bad economy and the birth rates are inversely related less people in the workforce means a bad economy and a bad economy means less family growth as a result only two other states new york and illinois had bigger population declines and a somewhat reputable source said west virginia is the least fun state to visit in the united states this study took into account factors like weather number of gyms number of yearly events and how many kid-friendly locations there are and how many beaches they have but that's not fair they don't have any beaches it's not their fault plus as you probably know west virginia has the highest overdose rate in the nation has the highest diabetes and hypertension rates it has the highest rate of kids being taken into state custody it has one of the highest poverty rates it has the third highest cancer death rate and the lowest rate of workforce participation man okay so we said we weren't looking at any more closets let's look in their medicine cabinet shh west virginia come on really well we have two states left mississippi continues to struggle in so many ways the magnolia states ranked at the absolute bottom for the highest rate of infant mortality they have the highest percentage of family poverty and they rank lowest in health and safety indexes this really pretty state ranks as the worst or close to it in four other categories including college graduates income levels home prices and jobs the education system mississippi is pretty lousy did you know that 32 percent of the population in mississippi can't spell their state's name one in three people in mississippi can't spell mississippi and with all this distance learning the kids way out in the poor mississippi communities don't have the resources to keep up so they're falling behind even more but here we are again last year we gave out 2.7 billion in foreign aid for things like infrastructure and internet connectivity but we can't even get internet into our own damn rural homes what the hell much of mississippi also has a big shortage of medical doctors too it's the second highest in obesity and has the highest rates for women dying of heart disease and breast cancer i mean one in five people in mississippi goes without health care because it costs too much should i show you how much money we spent on health care in other countries you don't want to know and finally thank god mississippi has the fifth highest number of broken homes although single parents are struggling down there i tell you another really inexpensive state and our worst date once again is new mexico new mexico is in last place for education and quality of child care moreover the land of enchantment has the third highest poverty rate in the country and the most dangerous day to all right ahead of alaska they see more break-ins armed robberies murders and thefts here than anywhere else only two-thirds of kids finish high school in new mexico and 16 percent of new mexican teens have a reading level of one out of five which is equivalent to barely being able to read a book meant for grade school kids there's a huge wealth gap in new mexico and wages really low for the unskilled it's just a very poor dangerous place in a lot of areas with very little opportunity outside of niche fields like engineering military and science and there's very few of those jobs but it has the fifth lowest cancer death rates in the nation so that's good when you look at the numbers overall new mexico ranks towards the bottom in just about every single category you can measure are there any good things about living in new mexico sure the culture is dynamic the food's great and the land some of the prettiest of all but new mexico has a long way to go before it becomes a place the rest of us admire too so there we go the worst places you can live in america this year it's pretty sad and alarming actually when you look at the bad places in this country and compare them to the good places if you live in one of the bad places we talked about and you're motivated to fix things great they need people to demand resources and frankly these areas just need people to actually care if you are unhappy there's things you can do just try and hang in there we're pulling for you it might seem so unfair the way things might seem [Music] but plenty of us care we need you to dream [Music] fix all of the
