at this point if it were inspected it wouldn't be a salvage boat i mean insurance myself establishment because it's incredibly massive yep she got it i'll have cameras we're gonna take an uber i think we're gonna have to drop this rider again to squarespace for sponsoring this video more about that later we are brett and jade evans we decided to go for our dreams and purchase the direct sailboat we're working hard to restore it and to document the journey with new episodes every week subscribe and join us on our greatest expedition [Music] yet it took months of work but finally we've rebuilt the damaged internal structure of our boat strong enough to re-bet the keel the keel install went flawlessly but the rudder install which should have been a simple insert and done is not so simple it's bolton okay you guys are good you can let it down yep yep she got it all right we're having some issues with this back bushing it's just not it's just not tight and it also wants to keep sliding down i think we're gonna have to drop this rubber again and just take it out and fix that we drop the rudder to inspect everything and fix any damage fortunately we didn't find any damage but we did find that the upper and lower bearings could use replacement since they are worn out from normal use we decided to not only replace the bearings but also replace the nylon collar and spacers we figured we might as well do it once do it right that way it'll last at least another decade or two the upper collar went in beautifully and the new unworn bearing didn't even need any adjustments for a perfect fit but this dang lower bearing is really pushing our problem solving skills as we fight metal memory gravity and our boat being in a giant swing set we have two big problems going on here the first is that the bearing needs to be adjusted and secured so it'll be snug against the rudder post to eliminate the play that we had before the second issue weighing on us is gravity constantly and consistently pulling the bearing down out of its recessed hole faster than the glue can cure we only have the travel lift for tonight which means that we need to get this bearing set in time for an early morning rudder install [Music] how do you feel about the kill being on it feels really good it's like i've been broken and now i am full she'll put back together yeah feel more complete definitely more solid could have been the patient's shoes yeah yeah it feels really good to have the keel back on i got an email from work that i'm leaving tomorrow and so i am especially glad yeah that the heel is back on it realizes tomorrow i didn't either until i just said that and realized that we're supposed to put the rudder i'll i'll find a flight in the afternoon i'll have came yes just been so fluid because of kobe but this workshop is gonna be quite a long one and we don't have the rudder on so that's the next thing that's going on tomorrow morning which means that we need to get it all figured out so we are on a mission to get things from ace hardware we're gonna get a clamp a hose clamp a big one that can fit around the bushing to hold it tight and then we'll tape it then we'll glue it then we'll put the rudder in it and then we'll sail away that's it there might be some more steps in between those lessons probably after we get stopped at antonio's i have 5200 everything did you not do your pre-flight check you guys kind of have to check your pants for epoxy or 5200 today make sure you're not tracking anything into the car you don't want we've got our hose clamp we're going to use that to clamp down the bronze bushing so that it doesn't have any wobble left anymore then what we'll do is we'll take a piece of tape and we'll place it on the inside of the bearing to hold it and make sure it stays this size we'll put some glue on the outside stick it up inside and call again a nice tight snug fit with less play which gives us more control in the water our first attempt was unsuccessful here is our new idea and we got the least flexible tape we could find i think which is going to be this gorilla duct tape that'll hold it in that position and then we can go ahead and glue it up let's give it a shot hopefully it works [Music] it's pretty tight and let's slide it off we got the feeler gauge and we're gonna stick that in so we know exactly how big our slit is and then we will tape it and we'll put this back in and see if we have maintained our distance [Music] okay brett i need you to make a gorilla sound when i pull it ready on three one two three that was pretty good hopefully what did i do to deserve you okay should i stretch it i would have well might not have made a difference but i would have probably didn't stretch it off good it's tighter now than it was okay it stretched a smidgen we tried to use tape on the inside of the bearing to temporarily keep it the right size while the glue cured and despite using a tape that claimed not to stretch it stretched that little bit of stretch would totally defeat the purpose of all of our hard work on this lower rudder bearing another thing we've really been working on has been our website thanks to squarespace for sponsoring the rebuild and launch of our new store check it out at expeditionevins.com we are super excited for all the pre-orders for expedition evans shirts but we're especially stoked for all of the let's shirts orders our new store really only works because of squarespace's extensions which enable us to track our website traffic our sales and inventory and most importantly offer international shipping which we very quickly realized was necessary since so much of our let's family lives outside the u.s go check out our shop at expeditionevins.com and if you're looking to rebuild your own website check out squarespace.com expedition evans for a free trial of squarespace and to get 10 off your first purchase of a website or [Music] domain [Music] okay a little update our first attempt was like way off first second third attempt we've been going at it for a minute the tape stretches we couldn't find none stretchy tape so we are feeling healer feeler age that's what it's called that's your feeling gage touchy feely gage i touch you feeling gage kept not matching the hole it kept getting too big which means that we were going to have play so what we end up doing is we actually put a couple pieces of tape in our shaft pocket in the pocket to create a tighter pocket so the pocket is actually what is holding our brass bushing it's a long day my words are slipping anyway the pocket is holding the brass bushing to the correct tightness for our touchy-feely gauge so we're good now we just need to 5200 it touch and feel it and then leave it to go and the best part this is a cold not culmination accumulation a combination whatever you want it to be bret and i put two ideas together and figured out how to keep the bushing from falling down which is what was happening earlier that was the problem we kept running into what we did is we're gonna put the 5200 on it we put it's in here by the way that's why i keep touching it put it back in with the 5200 and then we're going to take our old bushing squish it put it underneath and then take this piece of wood and put it underneath well i guess i should object lessons so good at teaching them put it underneath feed our paracord through it tie a knot and then we're good to go and i know what you're thinking why not just have something pushing up from the ground because we are a giant swing right now and the boat sways so if we had it being held up from the ground as the boat moves our brace would fall so this was the workaround [Music] [Music] so we've got it all glued in there and stuck i'm going to go up there and we have the string going through holding it here jay does the string going through this is the old bushing block of wood and a knot and so i'm going to go up there and pull the rope and should cinch this up and be good to go if i don't die going up the ladder and the boat is slightly swaying which makes this all the more interesting here's my contraption in last week's episode we had a serious win we've been busting our butts getting the boat ready for the keel install and it went beautifully but the battle was only half one while we're certainly celebrating the win we were really feeling the pressure to get the rudder issues figured out we only had one day in the slings to let the 5200 set on the keel which meant we had one day to get the rudder bearing sorted out to be ready to stab the rudder in the morning now that everything is in place and curing correctly we have a second to internalize what we've just accomplished with this keel install we are just cleaning up this last bit of 77 where am i getting my works 73 73 26 23-19 we have a 23-19 we're cleaning up the 5200 that's in our village it's pretty close but we've just kind of been coming up and cleaning it a little bit between all of the other projects but now all the other projects are done so this is our last thing of the night and then today we'll be done today today it's been a day pretty great day it's been a wonderful day it couldn't have gone much better what salvaged the boat is now fixed it's not done but it's fixed like at this point it's strong and safe and at this point if it were inspected it wouldn't be a salvage boat i mean insurance myself establishment because it's totally messy side but it wouldn't be salvaged because of damage right it's awesome we've just been trudging trudging in everything everything has been going into this boat for so long today getting the key on having that marked like obviously it's not the end but the end of this stage of the project i feel like it's that big motivating boost like we accomplished something yeah it does feel like yeah this is this this is like a milestone or like a well yeah a big marker right it's not just like well yeah we did some fiberglass whatever it's like no it kills on this feels good there's still a ton of work ahead there is a ton of workout okay so to fill you guys in a little bit tonight is brett's last night home yep so i'll be away for work for a while everybody that you're gonna have to go to work for that but i mean it's out totally out of our control yep and we try and honestly at this point in the world economy and everything oh the fact that i can't go to work yeah we're so happy his company can tell him to do whatever at this point will be like yeah sure yes please it's been very nice to see the end of the was a six month a six month furlough it wasn't furlough what would you call it six months having a job and not having any work and not getting paid yeah anyway it's good it's good to be back at work it's good to have a job [Music] [Applause] even though the battery box area isn't completed it is done enough that we can put the batteries back in for now moving them is definitely a two or three person job especially going up and down the companionway and well brett leaves tomorrow so we have to seize the opportunity now we are planning to upgrade these to lithium which means we're gonna have to do this all over again but in the meantime they need to be in the boat and safe because we're not quite ready for that upgrade yet you probably can't tell [Music] but we're swaying it's really a bizarre feeling to be just swaying because you're not rocking you're not you know you're kind of rolling you're sway you're like swinging it's like being in a huge swing set like uh like one of those gliders i think my grandma had one it's like a glider or just kind of like glided back and forth glid glid clawed glad i gladded [Music] ready you're good [Music] so the boatyard was so loud in this clip that i cannot salvage the audio i did try to dub it for you guys but yeah that wasn't working out so anyway what's going on is that the rudder went on it installed perfectly it is nice and stiff it turns nicely which is good a non-turning rudder would not be good we're very very pleased with how everything went and glad that we did the extra work last night to get it done and we're super excited that we managed to get it all done on time [Music] thanks for watching this week's adventure and for all of you who have reached out liked subscribed and joined us on patreon we are so grateful one of the best ways to help us with our project is to share the let's stream with your friends if you're enjoying our videos then they probably will too so hit the share button and we'll see you here again next week when we jump back through space and time to finally show you the epoch of all anti-fowling journeys and it is just taking it off like butter thanks for leaving so i could just enjoy that was maybe scary i thought you're doing gorilla
