hi I'm Erin and I'm a technical writer at looker in this video tutorial will show how to merge results from different explorers looker explorers often contain information from multiple data tables based on relationships that your developers have to find when possible you'll want to take advantage of these explorers because they'll be faster and guarantee correct however there may be times when your developers haven't created the relationships you need or they face technical limitations in these cases looker lets you combine data from different explorers to create data tables and graphs for example let's suppose we have data from two different explorers each based on a different database the first Explorer has data about web sessions while the other has data about user orders let's start with our first query which will be called the primary query we've based it on the web sessions Explorer picked a user count and a sessions count and grouped by session start month now we want to add information about orders but that comes from a different database and is available in a different Explorer to include that data we'll click on the gear menu and select merge results then we'll pick the Explorer that has the data we need since we want to include information about orders will choose the orders Explorer from orders we want the orders count we also need to select something that allows both of our queries to be joined together if you'll recall our first query was grouped by month so we'll do the same here with orders created month once we've selected the fields from the orders Explorer we'll click Save in the merge rules section liquor displays the fields that used to match the queries based on similar data types you can see that liquor has automatically matched the data based on date values the orders created month and the sessions start month but you can use other kinds of data like an account number or a city name if you want to change those choices click on a field name to see a drop-down list of other query fields you can use we'll click run to see the merge results our order count has been merged into our original web sessions query so we can see the results from both datasets together in our merge results note that we see the sessions start month but not orders created month that's because both of these fields are identical so looker will only show the field from the primary query but what happens if one of the values in your primary query doesn't exist in another query in that case looker will simply show null for the fields in that other query in this example the sessions data goes back for several years but the orders data only goes back for six months so looker displays nulls for the previous months in the reverse situation where a value in the other query doesn't exist in the primary query it simply won't show up what if we have orders for November 2017 if our primary query sessions only has data up to October 2017 then our merge results only includes values up to October 2017 we can view the visualization for our query results and as usual we can edit the visualization options to make our data clearer we can click on the combs to sort the data we can also edit the existing queries by clicking the name of the source query in the left pane from here you can add or remove fields or include filters for the individual queries click Save to return to your merge results if we want to add data from additional explorers we just click the add query button and follow the same steps whenever possible you should use the data from a single Explorer because your look or developer has designed how to combine the data from different database tables when needed though merging results is a powerful technique that enables you to combine data from multiple explorers and databases in a future release we will also be able to save merge results and add merge results to dashboards in looker 5.0 merge result is a lab feature that must be set up by your looker admin an admin first creates a user group named merged results beta users then the admin can see and enable the merge results lab feature thanks for watching in this tutorial we showed merged results a new experimental labs feature available in looker 5.0 to learn more about exploring data in looker check out the explore tab in lookers documentation
