hey it is michael welcome to the channel and the way i see it sling tv is the c student in school who tries really really hard and you want to give them a b but you just can't well after some recent changes i think i'm about to change sling tv's letter grade and in this video i'll explain the five things you need to know before you sign up for sling tv let's get started number one how much does sling tv cost sling tv has always been cheaper than youtube tv and hulu live and that is still true but sling tv's prices have gone up in january 2021 sling tv increased its starting price to 35 dollars a month for new customers sling tv went more than a year without raising its prices it previously raised prices in december 2019 and before that june 2018 and just like the other services sling tv said in a statement that the price increase is due to rising programming costs we've all heard that one before now i don't like any price hikes but my reaction to slings the latest price increase i have to admit it's not quite as strong as my feelings toward youtube tv and hulu live's latest price hikes for one sling tv's price increase is only five dollars a month not 10 or 15 dollars a month and also this existing customers they're going to be able to keep their current rate through the end of july 2021 as part of sling's one-year price guarantee sling tv's one-year price guarantee was launched in july 2020 right after youtube tv hiked its starting price by 15 a month and right during the middle of the covet outbreak as i mentioned before remember who raised your prices during the pandemic i guess now technically that does include sling tv but i give them credit for waiting longer than the competition to raise prices on everyone let's move on number two does sling tv have my favorite channels sling tv has three main bundles sling orange sling blue and a combination of them both sling orange plus blue if you want either sling orange or sling blue those are now 35 dollars a month each but if you purchase them both together the orange plus blue you can get all the channels from both packages for 50 a month and that is after this january 2021 price increase let's take a closer look we'll start with sling blue the popular networks from this bundle are listed on the screen there are about 45 channels with sling blue and this is the cheapest way to get all of the big three cable news networks the plan also includes nfl network and fs1 for sports fans but most of this lineup features entertainment and lifestyle networks for instance it is the cheapest way to get bravo without cable and finally local nbc and fox stations are offered but only in select cities next to sling orange and there are more than 30 channels with this bundle you'll notice some overlap with the sling blue plan but sling orange is the only plan that includes disney-owned networks like espn and really espn has always been the draw with sling orange if you didn't spot one of your favorite channels yet sling tv offers add-on channel packs that now start at six dollars a month up from five bucks obviously these bundles are a little more complicated than youtube tv and hulu live but sling has come up with a solution this is the service optimizer tool you just enter your must have channels and sling tv will recommend the package that is best for you let's try it out we'll add espn then nfl network all the major news ones hallmark channel hgtv and tlc this bundle costs 56 dollars a month but depending on your must-have channels it could be more or it could be less one major difference between sling tv and the other major live tv streaming services is the lack of local channels and that is why it starts at a lower price so for that reason i recommend sling tv if you can pick up your local broadcast tv with one of these a digital antenna or by using low cast if you haven't heard about locast before i've got a separate video on that i will link to that in the description below it's a way to stream your local stations for free or a small donation number three is cloud dvr included with sling tv no new channels were added as part of the january 2021 price hike but sling tv did give the dvr an upgrade and it needed it sling tv's plans whether that is sling orange sling blue or the combination of them both now come with 50 hours of cloud dvr storage at no extra charge that's up from only 10 hours before you can record multiple shows or movies at the same time as long as you have enough storage space fast forwarding through the ads is allowed and you can save your recordings for as long as you want to no expiration date if 50 hours of cloud dvr storage is not enough you can upgrade to 200 hours for 5 a month the other benefit of the upgraded dvr is that you can save favorited recordings so that they are not deleted if you run out of storage space with the free dvr it's going to automatically delete the oldest watched recording if you run out of space number four how do i stream sling tv sling tv works with a long list of supported devices so i can keep this section brief whether you want to stream on your phone tablet computer or to a tv set there are many ways to do it with sling tv i'm going to focus now on how to stream to a tv set roku amazon fire tv apple tv and google chromecast devices are among those compatible with the service and the sling tv app is also pre-installed on many newer smart tvs if you don't have a streaming device and need one check sling tv's website sometimes it'll send you a free device if you prepay for a couple months of service the offer on your screen right now is for a tivo stream 4k normally 50 bucks here is the remote for that tivo device and i've used it a lot with sling tv and overall really like it with this device you can integrate sling tv channels into tivo's live guide alongside channels from other services like pluto tv and even low cast of course sling tv has its own live guide no matter what device you use here is a look at the sling tv live guide for comparison it lets you favorite channels and preview content up to a week in advance not a bad live guide either number five can i watch sling tv on multiple devices the answer to that question depends on the bundle that you choose when you sign up for sling orange that is only one stream but sling blue allows for multiple streams up to three so the sling orange plus blue plan includes four total streams however there's more to it since these are two separate services you will only get one stream from the sling orange channels but up to three from the sling blue channels so when we think about it that way we've got sling orange has the disney owned networks for instance espn and disney channel that means since it is a single stream service you could not have one person watching espn in the living room and another person watching the disney channel in the basement because that would be two streams and you only get one with the sling orange channels but if most of your channels are in the sling blue plan that you get up to three streams and you may have better luck there let's talk sling tv pros and cons sling tvs bundles are not as simple as youtube tv and that is why i recommend youtube tv for first time streamers but there are many reasons why you may want to look beyond youtube tv after you've gotten started with streaming including saving money and sling tv offers a way to do that number one on my list of pros is the price if you only watch a handful of channels and sling has them it's almost half the price of youtube tv sling tv is also compatible with many supported devices you can stream from your phone computer or to a tv set and 50 hours of cloud dvr is a big improvement over 10 hours so i'll add that to the list of pros as for the cons let's face it sling tv is more complicated and you'll have to do more homework to figure out if its plans will work for you local channels are limited this service is best for people who can pick up broadcast tv with an antenna or locast and finally since sling orange is a single stream service it is not a great pick if you want to watch on multiple devices at the same time sling blue is more flexible at least but this could be a problem especially for larger households so back to the letter grade that i mentioned at the top of this video despite this price increase i think the upgraded dvr is a really big step forward for sling tv and some people may give sling a second look especially if they dismissed it before for only 10 hours of cloud dvr it's a little bit different now that it's up to 50. and i could argue that you could say sling tv has earned a b no longer a c but i really
