hey safer here today I'm going to start a new series since I live in California and I've done a bunch of California history I thought it was about time that YouTube had its own California history series so that's what this series is going to be the history of California by the way as always there's a bibliography in the description for those who want to do further research [Music] people initially settled what is now California as early as 17,000 BC by the 15th century AD it's estimated that the American Indian population numbered from one hundred thousand seven hundred thousand people and comprise six major tribal language groups the Indians here experienced the effects of the Spanish long before the Spanish came due to trade and disease transmission the population was already in flux by the time the Spanish began to settle California in the late 18th century there were several early attempts at European exploration first came Francisco de Ulua who explored as far north as the mouth of the Colorado River in 1539 this was at the personal expense of Hernan Cortes who wanted to know about the west coast of Mexico which was then called New Spain because he had recently conquered the territory from the Aztecs Orio proclaimed what many believed at the time to be an island to be named California before promptly being stabbed to death and his ship set adrift he never made it to the current state's border Baja California was discovered but his hire brother for which the state now resides had yet to be contacted by the Spanish Baja means low and the state of California was originally called Alta California Alta simply means high three years later an exploratory party was led by Juan Cabrillo selling a fleet of three ships the fleet made it as far as modern-day Oregon it probably didn't land on shore only neighboring islands they skipped over San Francisco Bay completely after getting in a few fights with local Indians Cabrillo got sick and died on one of the Channel Islands I was on a replica of his flagship the Sen Salvador fairly recently when it was anchored in Morro Bay funny enough the very bay would be where the next Spanish expedition would land this time they were part of a greater trend the Spanish had not lost sight of California after Cabrillo they created a group of ships in 1565 that would sail looted treasure from Manila in the Philippines to Mexico called the Manila galleon they would periodically sailed down the coast of California in 1587 Pedro de una mano made landfall in Morro Bay walked up into the valley where Samoas Obispo is now and then retreated from a group of Chumash who attacked the party before that the Spanish had been duking it out with the English for a while and this privateer named Sir Francis Drake filled up the coastal claim the supposed to island of California for the English in 1579 according the best guesses he made it to what is now called drakes Bay but this is problematic because it is based on a forged medallion either way he left there and completed a second circumnavigation of the globe another exploratory expedition sailed up in 1602 under the command of Sebastian Vaska Eno yet again they went as far north as modern-day organs but totally missed the San Francisco Bay he needed a bunch of stuff and setup for a possible colony in Monterey but no one came that was it for a hundred and seventy years no joke nobody landed in Alta California save for some Manila galleons accidentally crashing a few times after colonizing Baja California since the early 18th century global politics had to change to make Alta California become significant to any Europeans by the late 18th century the world had changed substantially the Spanish had stopped expanding and their empire in the New World was encroached upon by the French English and California's vicinity the Russians Russia especially was beginning to expand down the Pacific coast making it as far as modern-day Washington and mid 18th century plus the Seven Years War referred to as the French and Indian War here in the States had cost the Spanish crown tremendously the same war had led to the taxes that caused the American Revolution in the British colonies but Spain looked to other sources of revenue finally there were local factors the Spanish had created a system that gave Catholic missionaries power over local Indians and that was how they had been colonizing Baja California well after some fracas the Jesuits who had been running the mission system had angered the Spanish and the king expelled them from the Empire replacing them with Franciscans he needed a place to focus those Franciscans on it's been to the more radical of them while also maintaining his empire and starting to make some money back from the war it was time to conquer California the last conquistador expedition was sent north from Baja California in 1769 a long ragged train of mules and men snake their way along the California coast under the command of Gaspar de Portola and the monks led by one a thorough Sarah beginning in San Diego Sarah and a few men were left behind while portala and another monk named Juan Crespi continued northward portala was trying to get to Monterey well they overshot it and accidentally discovered the San Francisco Bay so they went all the way back to San Diego and then up to Monterey they set up a Presidio there once they arrived at no point during the expedition did they come into conflict with the indigenous people in Alta California in essence it was the longest distance peaceful conquest in history of course it would not remain peaceful in a foreboding event for the whole of California history while Sarah's party sat in San Diego creating the foundations for a mission building the Indians did not appreciate their territory being invaded by these weird foreigners so they raided the Spaniards the Spaniards defended themselves using their firepower to try to scare the Indians away but the Indians inflicted more casualties than they took after claiming ownership for two centuries prior to ever settling anywhere in Alta California Spain had taken it for themselves proclaiming all of the lenss and people there as their own Dominion the California mission system had been founded so that was the first episode in series tell me what you think in the comment I'm trying a new thing here the next one will be on the mission system so like and subscribe to see that I'll see you next time [Music]
