thank you and welcome and thanks for attending it's a little bit different than being in Kansas City that's for sure but I will say that I've been on a lot of these for work and I've actually done some of these for some coin clubs and stuff they are a lot of fun so let me the other thing is you get to see your buddy's office and stuff and the other poster personally there's my Haxby right behind me on the shelf you're wondering what that is back behind me let me share my screen and we'll go into PowerPoint mode here slideshow okay I've something a few of you I may have seen variations of this in the past I've updated it some and today we're going to talk about Confederate paper-money on the Confederate States of America and talk about what money was how it lead role in the war and then how to collect it and some of the books so let's go to the background a little bit the Confederate States was formed in 1861 after Abraham Lincoln was elected and seven states seceded and formed a new nation for the Capitol in Montgomery they immediately had a set about looking for money and financing this new this new country and within a week or so of when they were formed in February secretary meminger the Secretary of Treasury was negotiating and working with was looking around to figure out what they would do Congress passed the act of March 9 1861 the Montgomery notes funded for 1 million 1 million dollars doesn't sound like a lot of money today but it was non-trivial amounts of money back then these were gonna be 50 100 500 thousand dollar notes that bore 3.6 5 percent interest and they sought to secured a contract with the american bank note company in new york for both bonds and paper money the american bank note company contracted the notes out to the national bank note company and the first sets of these notes came down 607 of them each one of those four denominations came down before the war started then of course what we saw as the war started in Fort Sumter in in mid-april it said that a day or two after Fort Sumter the second shipment of the bonds and paper money were leaving New York to go to the Confederacy by ship and lower hasn't that federal agents were running down the dock to try to stop the boat from leaving with the money they wanted to confiscate the money but they missed it but got away we've got another thousand or 999 fifteen hundred not Montgomery notes and some bonds and things like that they did seize the plates from the American bank note company a national bank note company there were going to be other bonds and notes printed denominations and not denominations end and especially designs that we hadn't seen and...
