in this video I'm gonna show you a top-secret way that nobody is talking about on how to save money on hotels.com hey everybody welcome back to credit IQ my name is Shane if you want to raise your credit I Q so you can travel further for cheaper make sure you hit that subscribe button and that bail notification so you don't miss one of my future videos if you like videos on how to save money and how to travel for cheap make sure you hit that like button it really helps out the channel and I appreciate you like I said we're gonna talk about ways to save on hotels.com now there's a secret way that I haven't seen anybody talk about I haven't seen it in one blog I haven't seen it in a video now it may be out there but I just haven't seen it so I wanted to make sure to share it with you okay so before we get that though I'm gonna give you another way there's going to be a obvious way that pretty much everyone knows about I'm gonna give you a second way that some people know about but that third way that last way is going to be the top secret way so make sure you stay and watch all the way to the end so you can learn how to do that and I'm gonna give you a couple practical examples on how that savings works for you so the first way and pretty much everyone knows about this so let's get this out of the way is just the rewards program with hotels.com so if you have a hotels.com rewards program you're basically going to be able to earn 10% back every time you stay ten nights because every time you stay ten nights using hotels.com they're gonna give you your 11th night free or give you a one night free and basically how that works just real quickly is for that eleventh night they're gonna give you a free night based on the average value of what you spent per night on your previous ten nights so a quick example let's say for five nights you paid an average of 100 dollars per night and then for your other five nights you paid an average of two hundred dollars per night your free night is going to be based on an average of a hundred and fifty dollars so they're going to give you a value about one hundred and fifty dollars for your free night so basically essentially saving 10% so everyone knows about that that's not a secret but I just wanted to share that with you as a obvious way in case you were not aware let's move on to number two the second way to save money on hotels.com that is known but not as popular and that's going to be using the capital one venture card now as of right now this promotion is only running to the end of January of 2020 so we'll see what happens if they're going to extend it or if they're going to use a different service but basically right now you can earn 10 X miles which is basically 10% back every time you use your capital one venture card on hotels.com now you do have to go through your Capital One portal that takes you to hotels calm in order to get that now it's basically relatively simple you go through that portal you book you get 10 X miles and that gives you cash back that you can redeem using your capital one card now what a lot of people do and this is really the best way to save money on hotels calm is using the capital 1 portal and your capital one venture card in conjunction with using the hotel's hotel comm Rewards program you're basically saving 20% because you're getting 10 X miles which is 10% back on your credit card and you're getting that 11th night free with hotels.com that's the best way you're gonna be able to save 10% now that's basically if someone is if you're using hotels calm as your main way of booking hotels that's how you're gonna save money but what happens if you don't use hotels calm as your main way of booking hotels or you know you're not gonna use it for 10 nights because if you're not using it for 10 nights you're not going to get that 11th night free which is your 10% and you're not gonna be able to earn total of 20% because you're not combining that with a bench with your capital one venture card now also what if you don't use credit cards or what if you don't have the capital one venture card well there is another way to earn 10% back that doesn't require staying ten nights and that doesn't require a credit card in fact it's free and I'm going to show that to you now but before we do make sure you hit that like button it does really help out the channel also question of the day let me know in the comments below what is your favorite way on saving money when booking hotels I love to know okay as promised the top secret way to earn 10% back on hotels calm now this is going to be without having to use the rewards program and having to wait for that 11th night free and also without credit cards are you ready it's gonna be in the target red card now yes I know they have a credit card but they also have a debit card and me and my wife we got the debit card and we're playing on using this now what I really like about this is whether you have the credit card version or the debit card version you get the exact same benefits for how to save money and different perks now the only thing you lose obviously is maybe some of those credit card protections with your purchases so that's something to keep in mind but for me I didn't want to waste the hard pull opening up a target credit card so we got the debit card version now what I will say is we have a secondary checking account that we put a little bit of money aside that's our extra spending money that's our travel money so what we did is we linked our target debit card account to that secondary checking account because you do have to leak a link a checking account because the money comes straight from your checking account when you use a target debit card but you get basically the discounts and perks just by doing that so we linked our secondary checking account and we thought that was safe for just in case just in case there is ever a data breach or if somehow our information were to get compromised we didn't want to link our main checking account so that way it just reduces our risk of loss if it's linked to our secondary checking account so that's a quick tip that I would suggest that you do so you're basically get 10% off when you use the target red card now you do have to go through the target red card website once you get your debit card or your credit card you're gonna be able to get a login there's a hotels.com portal that you have to use then you have to go through the portal to get the 10% off they'll also give you a code if you try using that code without going through the portal it will not work I've tried things too for the target debit card or credit card you do have to go to your target red card account use the portal link and when you're getting ready to checkout at the bottom there is a section to put that code that they give you you have to put that code to get the discount you can't just use the portal link because the discount will not be there that's very important now another thing to know that is if you use that code that they give you you will no longer be eligible for the hotels.com rewards program so you essentially are trading your 10% bonus of that free night for 10% off upfront so like I say if you're someone that's not going to be staying at hotels calm frequently this is a much better option for you because you're getting that savings from the beginning rather than having to stay ten nights and get that stay basically 10% back later now some other things to note is you do have to pay upfront you can't choose the payout hotel option or pay later you have to pay upfront in full on the website you also can't use this to book packages it only works for hotels so you can't go on there and package your hotel with a flight or anything like that you have to use it just for a hotel stay the office says the coupon can only be used five times now I haven't reached that five times limit but if and once I do I will make sure to make a video to let you know what happens they give you a new code or if you're just done for the year I don't know but I'll make sure to keep you updated another thing to know is that this only applies to the first room so if you have a large family and you need two or more rooms you're only gonna get the 10% discount on that first room you will have to pay in full or any room after that now what's nice is you don't have to use that Target red card that debit card to pay in order to get the 10% off you only need to use the portal and the code that they give you so what that means is you can use any debit card any credit card and any even any gift cards so let's say you have a checking account that in addition gives you maybe 1% back on all your purchases that would be a good option especially if you're not one that uses credit card but I'm gonna show you another way to save even more than 10% now with this one it does require having a credit card but it's not going to be the capital one venture card because since the capital one venture card has its own portal and the target red car has its own portal you only get that discount by using each portal so you're not able to combine those two now if you want to save more than 10% here's how you do it what you're going to want to do is you're going to want to find one of your credit cards that has a rotating category let's say like the discover it or the chase freedom or another card along those lines every three months they give you a extra 5% off in particular categories so you're going to look for those categories that have gas stations grocery stores are basically anywhere that sells a gift card and specifically hotels.com gift card right because that's how you want to combine your savings now and just a tidbit if you get the discover it card in your first year Discover will match your cash back so if you use it to buy a gift card to save 5% from the jump at the end of your first year they're gonna match that 5% essentially giving you 10% off so that's a way to save even more money that's only in your first year otherwise it's going to be 5% off now there is a credit card that you can use to save a little bit more that's going to be the American Express blue cash preferred card now that card does come with an annual fee so you have to calculate the cost if it makes sense for you to get it but it gives you 6 percent off at grocery stores and most grocery stores do sell gift cards so that could be a good way to save an additional amount off now let's look at two practical examples on how to combine that target red card 10% off in addition with a couple credit cards let's do that now so you've already logged into your target red card account you've clicked on the hotels comm portal you've selected the hotel you want to stay at because you're going to want to do your research first before you actually make the purchase because you're going to need to know how much to put and purchase a gift card for so you're going to get that all set up you're going to look at that head so I'm using this world life example here this is a seven-night stay it's gonna be four five people our total is going to be one thousand two hundred and two dollars and fifty two cents now this is before we've applied any discounts so now we're going to put in our target red code to give us that 10% off that's gonna drop down our cost already to one thousand ninety nine dollars and seventy four cents now keep in mind this ten percent off does not come off from the taxes that comes off pre-tax amount and then the taxes are going to be added so you're gonna want to get a gift card in the amount of about eleven hundred dollars so we're going to say eleven hundred dollars so there we've already saved over a hundred dollars so now if you use your discover it card especially in the first year you're going to be able to save 10% so what's nice is you're actually going to go out and buy that gift card for $1,100 now that amount does include taxes so you actually are able to save a little bit on the taxes this way so you're gonna go out and spend $1,100 but because you've gotten that ten percent cashback that cashback will show up on your credit card dropping your essential payment for this hotel down to nine hundred and ninety dollars effectively for a savings of about two hundred and twelve dollars total so this essentially gives you a total discount of about seventeen point six percent now let's look at one more example using the American Express blue cash preferred card that I mentioned earlier so again that card gives you six percent off at grocery stores so if you can find a grocery store that sells hotels.com gift cards this is an excellent way to go we're going to take that same $1,100 we're gonna go buy a gift card this is gonna give you six percent back essentially dropping down your savings to one thousand thirty four dollars that's how much your out-of-pocket cost of being because you're gonna get that six percent cash back on that credit card essentially giving you a fourteen percent savings so there you have it I gave you two practical ways to save money on hotels calm I also gave you the best as an option for you let me know in the comments below have you heard anybody talk about my top secret way to save money on hotels comm or do you know of another way that you prefer to save money on hotels com we'd love to hear about it in the comments below if you want to continue to grow your credit IQ make sure you watch that video there I'll see you there have a good
