It's Paul Yokabitus from Cary Estate Planning back with another video as part of our 2020 Video Challenge, and we're continuing on our theme of estate administration and personal representative responsibilities and authorities, and today, I want to talk about obtaining an EIN on behalf of the estate. So an EIN is a federal employer identification number, some people also call it a TIN, or a tax identification number, and the purpose of this is to basically attribute income to the estate, to the extent an estate receives income, and then, to also open accounts in the name of the estate, and so, one of the first things that an executor or administrator will do after they receive letters from the court giving them that authority will be to open an estate checking account. In order to do that, the bank needs to be able to attribute income or interest in that account to a taxpayer or a tax filer, and so, that's the point of the EIN is to basically track and allow for the submission of tax returns, a 1041 return, to be more specifically, or to be more specific for income generated in the estate, attributable to the estate, and generally, the 1041 is something that may or may not be required depending on, you know, the income realized in the estate home. we'll do a separate video on that. But essentially, you would go online and submit the EIN application form, very quick, but you generally want to do it in one full sitting and either print or have the EIN confirmation mailed to you because this is generally not something you can come back to and reprint or ask for it through your email.
