jesus [Music] hallelujah set me free [Music] he's the one who set me free hallelujah jesus christ [Music] my hey i'm so glad you're with us this weekend if we haven't met yet my name is eric and i'm the senior pastor at mariners church if you're watching from our huntington beach congregation this weekend so glad you're with us our neighborhood locations all throughout orange county we have many of you watching at senior living facilities we have the oc rescue mission with us this weekend and many of you are are watching with a group of friends and family in homes and some of you are watching online so glad we're all together it's good it's good to be able to worship together and study the scripture together so welcome welcome to mariners church this weekend the story is told it's a fascinating story about a brazilian fisherman and a businessman who happens to be visiting the brazilian fisherman town where the fisherman lives the fisherman has come in from fishing all morning he's caught lots of fish and the businessman sees him come ashore and they strike up a conversation the businessman says hey how much fish did you catch and how long did it catch did it take you to catch those fish and the fisherman says well i was only out for a couple of hours i just catch enough for my family and for me and and then the businessman says well then what do you do the rest of the day and the fisherman says well i go home and i play with my kids and i take a nap and and then in the evening i go into town and i drink and play guitar with my friends it's what i do every single day tomorrow i'll wake up and i'll go fishing again the businessman says well i've got an idea for you if you tomorrow will start fishing longer you will catch more fish and then you'll be able to buy a bigger boat the fisherman says okay but what would i do with a bigger boat the businessman says well with a bigger boat you could catch even more fish and as you save money from catching all of those fish you could then buy more boats you could have a fleet of boats you could employ other people to catch fish for you and you could build a whole business around your how great you are catching fish the fisherman says okay but but then what would i do the businessman says ha well this is what you would do next after you had a fleet of boats and you caught lots and lots of fish and you became known as being this expert fisherman for the entire country you could then build your very own packing and production plant you could package fish you could sell all throughout the whole country you could integrate vertically and capture value and margin up and down the value chain you can become very wealthy if you follow this business plan and the fisherman says wow i've never i've never heard of this what what would i do next the businessman laughs and says this is when it gets really good next you could possibly float shares to your company on the stock exchange and then you would become fully free and fully loaded you would be filthy rich the fisherman looks at the businessman and says yeah but but then what would i do the businessman says well then here's what you could do you could wake up in the morning and just go fishing and catch fish just for you and your family then you could play with your grandkids and you could take a nap with your wife and you could go into town at night and play guitar with your friends and just have a good time clearly the advice of the businessman to the fisherman didn't make a lot of sense where do you get advice from where do you get counsel from where do you get your wisdom from we are in a study in the book of proverbs and we are seeing that there's a lot of places that we can look for wisdom but in the study of the book of proverbs we're looking to the wisdom writer we're looking to the scriptures the ancient wisdom that we find there it's actually wisdom from above wisdom from god on how we can live life well it's this is a series we called word to the wise and today we're going to talk about where do we get our wisdom from in terms of how we view resources in terms of how we view money you know there's a study that was done by t.w price that was about where americans get their concepts of finances where do you learn about money and in the study people concluded that the research concluded that 40 of americans never hear about money from their parents because their their parents view it as too uncomfortable to talk about and so we then have conversations with businessmen on trips because our parents didn't talk to us about the importance of finances and how we view money and i get it it is sometimes an uncomfortable conversation i remember when my kids first came to me after their very first successful lemonade stand they came in they had made 12 bucks selling lemonade at the edge of our driveway and i remember wrestling do i do i let them believe that they actually made 12 bucks or do i tell them the truth which i i did like you didn't actually make 12 bucks if you count the cups that you now own mom variable cost for every cup that you sold eliminate your cost went up so that's three bucks and i'm gonna waive the fixed costs of the rent for the edge of the driveway that would be another three bucks so you only made six bucks pre-taxes i can't let you live with the fantasy of a hundred percent margin no tax business it's not reality and my kids looked at me like ah dad you ruined you ruined our whole day you ruined our whole day with this news so i get it that it's often uncomfortable for a family to talk to their children about finances but the book of proverbs is the parenting manual in the jewish culture in the old testament among god's people for how to raise people to really walk in wisdom and the book of proverbs does not shy away at all from the uncomfortable conversation about how we view money and this is really good news because this means that god cares about the nitty-gritty details of our lives that the bible's just not filled with high-level theological and philosophical conversations although the scripture is filled with that but the bible is also super practical ground level nitty gritty actually cares about how we view our finances the bible addresses this in the book of proverbs and this is important because finances are a major part of our lives relationships can really suffer because of differing views of finances i read a research study last week that says 70 percent of all marriage discussions or fights is because of finances finances impacts your view of work finances impacts your goals finance impacts your level of stress and so it's really good news for me that the scripture gives us instruction on how to view our finances so that we don't have to just wait on a brazilian brazilian beach for a businessman to show up with some advice that we can listen to what the scripture says about how to view our finances because god cares about all of the details of our lives he cares about this specific detail and he even though it's an uncomfortable conversation because he loves us he steps into this conversation so the book of proverbs as you know is the book that is filled with wisdom and today we're going to see wisdom on how we view the important part of our life finances now no matter where you are in your journey maybe you have retired and you are wealthy uh maybe you're been very successful in terms of finances maybe you're a teenager and you're just starting off maybe you are in a difficult situation financially the scripture cares for you god cares for you and he's going to give you counsel in the book of proverbs that is really going to be helpful and insightful and encouraging for you no matter where you are because again god cares about every single detail of your life and he's going to press in to this conversation that many of us unfortunately haven't had a lot of wisdom poured into us so again the book of proverbs super challenging and super insightful and super practical for us now if you have been at mariners for long you know that typically i'll take one passage of scripture and really unpack that one passage but because we're studying proverbs and the book of proverbs has so many verses about money this is going to be a bit different over the next several moments i'm going to give you 10 thoughts from the book of proverbs about finances now the main overarching principle is going to be that the book of proverbs is going to challenge us to steward money not to let money steward us that there's really two different ways to live that you can view money as a gift and you're gonna steward that it's a money is a terrific gift or money is a terrible god and when money is your god the thing that owns you embosses you around you aren't stewarding money as much as money's stewarding you and money's managing you and money's driving you so the book of proverbs this parenting wisdom that was given to god's people israel is going to challenge us to view money as a gift from god as a tool that we steward not that owns us and bosses us around so i'm going to give you ten principles from the book of proverbs there's gonna be a verse from every single one of these principles in the book of proverbs and this is the kind of wisdom that i want to pass on to my daughters this is the wisdom from the book of proverbs that our father god passes on to us so it's going to be like essentially a sitting down bullet point conversation this is god's wisdom for you on the important part of your life finances because he cares about that detail of your life so 10 10 truths we'll see number one we see this in the book of proverbs riches are fleeting the book of proverbs helps us understand that the riches even though they're blessings from god in this world that they don't last eternal riches they last forever the riches of jesus they last forever but riches here they don't last and we've learned that in 2020 and the start of 2021 some have acquired more riches some have struggled in this season and many would say it had nothing to do with their intellect or their work ethic but just the industry that they were in in this crazy season that things just changed so much in this world i mean kids would admit this that the presence they so longed for at christmas just a couple of weeks ago that those presents they aren't satisfying as much as we thought that they would that riches they don't quench they're constantly fleeting notice what the proverbs says in chapter 23 verse 4 and 5 don't wear yourself out to get rich because you know better stop as soon as your eyes fly to it it disappears riches disappears for it makes wings for itself and flies like an eagle to the sky we've heard for years you perhaps have heard people say this before you'll never see a u-haul behind a hearse and basically people are saying that because you can't take what you have in this life with you to the next life but something crazy happened in 2020 because so many things crazy happen there's actually a picture of a u-haul behind a hearse you actually can see a u-haul behind the hearse but even though there's a picture of that we know that the person who's in the back of that hearse is not taking with them the riches from this life from this world riches they're often fleeting here and riches for sure are not going to follow us to the afterlife and so we have to have the proper perspective that all the things we have here in this world they are fleeting okay here's number two you may wonder okay riches are fleeting so how much do i need in this world the book of proverbs has a fascinating answer that you think about living in that culture and living in this culture you know how much is enough how much do i need the wisdom writer would say this neither too much nor too little is best that the best is is really enough where you are satisfied but not too much where you trust your wealth notice what the scripture says keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me give me neither poverty nor wealth feed me with the food i need otherwise i might have too much and deny you saying who is this lord or i might have nothing and steal profaning the name of my god so the wisdom writer is saying if you have too much you actually start to trust your wealth and you deny god but if you have too little you envy and you steal so the right amount is to be satisfied with what the lord has given you riches are fleeting number one neither too much or too little is what's best then here's number three wisdom and work are gifts they're gifts too wealth is a gift but so are wisdom and work and this is why this is important to understand because as you read the book of proverbs and many of us are reading the book of proverbs in 2021 as you read the book of proverbs you are going to see that the bible connects wealth a gift from god that he gives but the bible connects wealth to both wisdom and to work ethic so you'll see look at these verses in proverbs chapter 14 verse 24 the crown of the wise is their wealth but the foolishness of fools produces more foolishness so wisdom is connected to wealth but also work ethic is connected to wealth look at the next proverb proverbs 10 verse 4 idol hands make one poor but diligent that's hard working hands brings riches so proverbs has this sense that if you have wisdom and if you work hard that wealth can possibly come your way but as you read the book of proverbs i want you to understand because some of you you have wealth and you've received well through either wisdom or through work ethic but the book of proverbs is saying to you even your work ethic and your wisdom are a gift from god when you read the book of proverbs you walk away with humility understanding that everything i have i have received as a gift from god my entrepreneurial spirit my my work ethic my intellect the ability to get up in the morning and go to work the ability to to to have a business the ability to start and flip a business many of you have these things in your life and the scripture the book of proverbs is reminding you that is a gift from god you did not accomplish this on your own it's all by his grace even wisdom and work ethic those are gifts those are gifts from god all right next number four this is important especially um living in a culture now where everybody instagrams all the places they go and all the possessions that they have and what they wear the car and the clothes don't tell the whole story the car in the clothes the wisdom rider was sitting down across from you hundreds of years ago when this was written and even right now would say the car doesn't tell the whole story the clothes don't tell the whole story notice what the proverbs say in verse 7 of chapter 13 one person pretends to be rich but has nothing another person pretends to be poor and has abundant wealth the book of proverbs is calling out the fakers and there are there are fakers people who so badly want to be accepted by a group of people based on their clothes or based on what they dry and they put themselves under an immense amount of pressure some of you perhaps have done that you have this idea that you have to keep up with the joneses whoever the heck they are and the joneses are crushing you and making you miserable the joneses are causing you to live with this burden that you should not live with because you so badly want to pretend for them and keep up with them and give this perception of success the wisdom writer is saying just because someone looks this way doesn't mean it's the reality doesn't mean it at all and then the wisdom writer says it's it's also true it's also true that um some people look poor who aren't poor they they don't care as much they don't dress to impress um they have wealth even though they don't look like it you perhaps have heard of warren buffett he's constantly listed as one of the 10 most richest americans and he still lives in a home that he bought in the 1950s drives a modest car to work every day and eats breakfast from mcdonald's every day which is not the wisest choice but whatever none of us are perfect but he doesn't look and live a life of affluence but is extremely affluent the wisdom writer is saying that happens all the time that some people fake it to look rich when they really aren't and when you do that you burden yourself with a burden that you aren't meant to carry all right next one number five again this is the wisdom writer sitting down with you just pouring out all of the wisdom about the important part of your life which is finances because god cares about the nitty-gritty details of your life more money means both more problems and more opportunities notice this proverb it's it's really fascinating riches are a ransom for a person's life but a poor person hears no threat the wisdom writer says hey if if you're wealthy you um and you're kidnapped you're going to be able to afford denzel washington or lee neeson to get you unkidnapped they can come and rescue you can afford you can afford the ransom if you're rich but if you're not rich it's you probably don't need the ransom anyway because there's no threat for your life so if you're poor you don't have to worry about being kidnapped if you're rich you have to worry about being kidnapped but then you can afford the ransom and so more money has more opportunities for you but also more problems biggie small and p diddy years ago they were right when they wrapped i don't know what people want from me it's like the more money we come across the more problems we see and so money is is a gift but it can also be a burden for you all right number six and this is really important and you definitely get this as you study the proverbs to be thoughtful about debt now now many of you have used debt to build businesses and to leverage uh assets in certain directions but the proverbs speaks clearly that debt is something we must cautiously move into that we can actually be enslaved by debt notice what the proverb says the rich rule over the poor and the borrower is a slave to the lender and some of you this verse oh it stings because you feel in this moment like you are enslaved to death that you don't have the freedom to do all the things that you want to do in this world because of debt and our church wants to help at the end of the service we'll talk about a class that we have for you to help you have a plan to get out of debt because that is in scripture often compared to slavery to being entrapped and unable to really walk and enjoy freedom so we want to be really cautious and thoughtful about debt as we move into that this is an area in my marriage that kay and i talk about frequently how thankful we are to our parents who gave us great wisdom in terms of debt we got married and we found out after we got married that both of us grew up in the same kind of philosophy at home on how we view debt my wife kay she was the daughter of a high school principal and a cafeteria worker and she was one of five kids raised in a 1200 foot home 1200 square foot home and they paid cash for everything i mean for everything me i grew up in a more wealthy environment than than kay grew up but i was taught early that you only have debt for things that appreciate anything that depreciates anything that goes down in value you only pay cash for so we came into our marriage with that understanding of debt and it has served us well we have seen the wisdom of the proverbs in terms of debt not being a hindrance to things that we sense the lord calling us to do in our marriage okay number seven save like the ant i had an old testament professor who said one of the things that's fascinating about the book of proverbs and a bit offensive to us as humans is that god is constantly asking humanity to learn from the animal kingdom that were encouraged to learn from the animal kingdom look at this this this passage in proverbs chapter 6 it's like a city of ants it's like a center of ants in this passage zoolander go to the ant you slacker observe its ways and become wise without leader administrator or ruler it prepares its provisions in summer it gathers its food during harvest we are told to learn from the ant because the ant is wise the ant collects but doesn't consume everything that the ant collects the ant sets aside for the future and if we're going to be wise we are not going to consume everything that we collect the money that we take in this week or over the next several weeks or over the next month if we're going to be wise like the ant without a leader or administrator without somebody telling us to do this we're going to set money aside and we're going to save like the ant all right next one number eight honor the lord first let me show you this this is how people typically view finances this is how it makes sense this is how many people live that we we first spend so whatever money we take in we we spend to live we pay our bills we pay our expenses we go out to eat we do the things that we enjoy we spend and then if we have some left over we then save so we spend what we need to spend to live and then if there's some leftover we will actually set some aside and then if there's still some after we have saved and there's a cause we believe in then that's when we will give and honestly apart from the scripture apart from the book of proverbs this would make sense but the book of proverbs actually says this is not the wise way to live the wisdom writer says the opposite that the wise way to live and it's it's going to sound crazy when you first hear it but the scripture teaches the wise way to live is is actually the opposite that you first give you then save and then you spend that the very first thing you do is that you honor the lord with your wealth that you honor the lord by giving to him first then you set some money aside like the ant and you save and then you spend and live i want you to see this i want you to see this in the passage notice what the scripture says in the proverbs verse 9 and 10 of chapter 3 honor the lord with your possessions and with the first produce of your entire harvest so like the very first thing you take in you first honor the lord now why is that wise how is that wisdom that doesn't sound like it would make a lot of sense because here's why it's wise because the lord's actually promising that if you do that then your barns will be completely filled and your vats will overflow with new wine this is why it's wise to give first because when you give first you are taking generosity and making that a priority and you're taking greed and you're taking it out of your life through generosity to the lord you're removing greed from your life and you are showing that you trust him and when you trust him he promises that he is going to fill and it may not be physical barns this isn't like saying you're going to get a brand new car it's not what the scripture is promising the lord is promising that he will meet all of your needs according to his riches and glory and he's promising that your life is going to be filled with his peace and his life and his joy and his grace that you are going to be taken care of by this great god if you will trust him first you give first then save then live that this lord is going to ensure you were taken care of provided for that this great god is going to satisfy the deepest longings of your soul it doesn't make sense when we read it until we experience it and when you live this way the lord always comes through i have never met someone who lives this way who regrets living this way i've never met someone who gives first to the lord and then saves and then spends who doesn't say this is the best way to live for my joy for my happiness for knowing i'm experiencing all that god has for me this is the best way to live okay number nine generosity is how you are enriched you aren't enriched by acquiring things to yourself you're actually enriched by giving things away from yourself this is what the book of proverbs says notice the scripture a generous person will be enriched and the one who gives a drink of water will receive water the way that you are enriched is to actually give to be a generous person this is what the book of proverbs says is the rule of life for those who are wise that the wise are the generous and then here's number 10 last one the righteous are easily satisfied the wicked never are i want you to see what the scripture says here the lord will not let the righteous go hungry but he denies the wicked what they crave so the righteous are satisfied that the lord is going to take care of you but the wicked the cravings that the wicked have they are never satisfied what does this mean this means right now for those of you who have trusted the lord who love the lord that he is going to take care of you some of you are watching at a senior living facility right now and you have lived through a painful season i want you to know that the lord watches over you and that he cares for you and he's not forgotten you at all some of you are at the oc rescue mission and you've fallen on difficult and challenging times and understand that you have a great god who's going to provide for you who's going to care for you he's always going to be good to you he's always going to meet your needs according to your riches and glory the righteous he's going to take care of he's going to provide for your needs and ultimately he's the one who satisfies the deepest longings of your soul he fills you with his mercy and his grace and his forgiveness the wicked on the other hand all of the cravings that they have they're never satisfied what does that mean it's a reminder that the blessings in this world they aren't what ultimately satisfies us music and art and food and pleasure and great views and a nice home all of those things that are blessings and gifts they were meant to show us the one who does satisfy us those were gifts given by god to point us to him but they weren't meant to be the thing that satisfies us but the wicked they look to those things to be what quenches them and because they look to those things to be what quenches and satisfies them they are never satisfied because those things can never satisfy only our good and gracious god can but when we trust in him and we set our affection on him and he is our god he's the one who quenches us he is ensures that all of our needs are met and he satisfies the deepest longings of our soul we are satisfied so there's two ways really for you to view resources for you to view money for you to view wealth one is it is a gift and it is a terrific gift that god has given he's the giver he's the one who ultimately provides for us and you can then take that gift and use it to bless others you can take that gift and enjoy the great things in this world you can enjoy the blessings that god gives you that's the right the right way to view money is it's a it's a terrific gift but it is a terrible god resources are a terrible god and when they are your god they won't quench you and they won't satisfy you so steward money don't let money steward you be sure your view of money is as the proverbs is that it's a gift but it is not your god steward money don't let money steward you that is today's word to the wise you unravel me with a melody you surround me with a song of deliverance from my enemy till all my fears are gone i'm no longer asleep to fear for i am a child of god for i am a child of god from my mother's who you have chosen love me called my name i've been born again into your family [Music] your blood runs [Music] i'm no longer [Music] of god i'm no longer god [Music] of god thank you for calling me alone in your arms i find my freedom [Music] [Music] right is my fears [Music] i am [Music] if you've been tuning in to mariners online services for any length of time you've heard us talk about the joy of generosity and what it means to take a step in trusting god with our finances the proverbs have a lot of wisdom to share on how we should view money and what to do with it the new testament gives us instruction on the way we should give and what happens when we do paul's letters to the corinthians tell us that we should give cheerfully proportionately and regularly in first corinthians he says on the first day of the week each of you is to set something aside and save in keeping with how he is prospering this is a picture of god's people experiencing the joy of generosity as they give regularly and proportionately from the first of what they've earned some scholars refer to this as a tithe giving 10 percent off the top of the first of what you've earned other scholars believe that it's not about a 10 or a number it's just about giving generously from all that we've received but all scholars agree that giving regularly and consistently is an important part of our faith because we're continually and regularly fighting greed in our lives and each time we trust god with our finances our relationship with him is strengthened and we continue to look to him as the source of our provision to help you make generosity a regular part of your spiritual practice just text my mariners to the number below on your screen and select recurring as you determine your gift next the bible teaches us what happens when we give when we give we experience joy and others recognize god second corinthians 9 says you will be enriched in every way for all generosity which produces thanksgiving to god through us for the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to god because of the proof provided by this ministry they will glorify god for your obedient confession of the gospel of christ and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone giving is good for our hearts and produces things in us but giving is also good for others others give thanks and glory to god when they see our generosity i encourage you to consider
