joseph someone suggested putting it out just to emphasize the fact that it is the year of saint joseph keep in mind that saint joseph is also the principal patron of canada we have the largest shrine in montreal in honor of saint joseph the largest shrine in the entire world so it's important for us to have a great devotion to him and especially when we consider saint andre bessette and the the thousands of miracles that he worked through the intercession of saint joseph so let us invoke saint joseph throughout this year especially during this time of pandemic to protect us to guide us and to provide for us brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have one having authority and not as the scribes just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit and he cried out what have you to do with us jesus of nazareth have you come to destroy us i know who you are the holy one of god but jesus rebuked him saying be silent and come out of him and the unclean spirit convulsing the man and crying with a loud voice came out of him they were all amazed and they kept on asking one another what is this a new teaching with authority he commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him at once jesus fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of galilee the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ as catholics we're encouraged to have a devotion to our guardian angels as well as the archangels michael gabriel and raphael we can call on on the host of heavenly angels to help us but thinking about the angelic beings also ought to remind us of the demonic beings in other words the fallen angels and they do exist so whereas our guardian angel and the good angels want to help us the demons the fallen angels they want to prevent us from doing the good they want to restrict our freedom they want to restrict our ability to attain our destiny which is to make it to heaven to be happy so in today's gospel reading as i pointed out you know there's the mention of our lord casting out a demon an unclean spirit and some people say well how come there were all these cases of demonic possession at the time of our lord but not at other times the reality is that demonic possessions are present in every age and in fact in recent times there's more and more cases of demonic possession and greater diabolical influence on people demonic possession is the most extreme form of diabolical activity every human being can be tempted by the demonic spirits and we are tempted by the demonic spirits in other words they care about you they want you they want you to sin they want you on their side so that they can drag you down into hell why because you see when it comes to god god wants to be united to us god wants to be in our soul so in a sense we are possessed by god we belong to god we are united to god and god tells us what his commandments are basically summed up in love but to love we choose it freely so god cannot compel us to love and nobody nobody can force themselves to love it's something that we have to choose freely when it comes to the evil spirits they also want to possess us they want to be united with us so when a person is possessed the demons have entered into the body of that person and they sometimes control the person's body and they're able to do supernatural things so sometimes what they do is they push the soul of the person aside and they completely control the body and speak through the the body and there is evidence of this that that this is real so they can speak in different languages they can know things that is inexplicable that they shouldn't be able to know and they they often manifest super human strength supernatural strength and sometimes they can do things like you know levitate and things like that or just the body moves if it's laying on the floor it moves and without anybody touching it or moving it so demonic possession is very very real and as i mentioned there's more and more cases of demonic possession taking place why what are the things that can open an individual to demonic possession one of them is being in a habitual state of mortal sin in other words not just someone who falls into sin again and again because if a person is genuinely trying to overcome sinful inclinations even though they fall again and again god is going to help them but someone who kind of says well i'm just going to sin anyways i don't care i'm not going to go to confession i'm going to put confession off they're in more danger of becoming possessed so when we commit mortal sin we separate ourselves from god and we're on the side of the evil spirits they have greater influence upon us and could eventually possess us possession is usually it doesn't happen quickly it takes a long time or a period of time sometimes for various reasons it can happen quicker the other thing that can dispose a person is just a rejection of god so a person may not be committing mortal sins or doing terrible evils but they just stop praying they just turn their back on god they're just concerned about worldly things and another thing that can dispose a person to greater diabolical influence is dabbling in the occult occult means hidden things or mysterious things so witchcraft the new age movement going to a fortune teller psychic healers playing with a ouija board and certainly satanism so these are like dark hidden things so occult means hidden mysterious things so all of these things can dispose a person to diabolical influence and eventually to diabolical possession now as i mentioned diabolical possession is like the most extreme form and there's lesser forms of demonic influence extraordinary demonic influence so diabolical obsession means you're kind of obsessed with certain thoughts certain inclinations certain ideas maybe suicidal tendencies maybe the desire to hurt someone maybe the desire to hurt yourself or the desire to commit a certain crime and kind of obsessive thoughts and and you're just kind of obsessed with these things the other one is diabolical oppression and diabolic diabolical oppression is when things don't go well for you your relationships are terrible you're always arguing you're always fighting you can't seem to hold down a job and you're arguing with everyone at work and just terrible things happen one thing after another maybe even health issues you know nothing seems to go well for you well it's the evil spirits who are making your life miserable but you may not be aware of it now just because someone is having you know hard luck and terrible things happening it doesn't necessarily mean that it's due to demonic influence but the reality is that the closer we are to god and the more that we are the way that god wants us to be the more god will bless us and the more god will help us to be truly happy to overcome these kind of of conditions that we may be under so what i wanted to get at is that the evil spirits can restrict our freedom our ability to do good and ultimately they want to have control over us they get a kick out of being able to control or control us why because they feel like they are a god oh i got these subjects i know how to manipulate them it's entertaining watch me press their buttons watch me get them to sin hahaha they just laugh at us so the demons want to do this and the demons hate us because they know that we have a chance to be happy they know that we have the ability to have god within us to become christ-like and the more we become christ-like the more they fear us and stay away from us and this is why we should draw close to christ so christ is the one who sets us free from our slavery to sin from the influence of the demonic spirits and he sets us free from the reality of hell so that we don't end up in hell he leads us to our heavenly homeland which of course is is being happy with god forever in heaven but he helps us in this life also he helps us to be happy he helps us to be the kind of person that we want to be and this is why we need to turn to christ so am i truly free you know granted today because of the pandemic situation we've lost a lot of our freedoms but am i free to pursue a relationship with god or are there obstacles in my life am i able to be as close to god as i would like to or are my sinful inclinations keeping me from that or my bad habits or my poor scheduling of my time am i free to love the people around me in the way that i should the way that i want or am i often having conflict with them and disagreements and arguments and just being upset then clearly something is not right so we cannot change everything about our lives where there is opportunity to change things we should look for those opportunities whether it's dealing with government officials or or you know our situation regarding work or whatever it may be but what we really need to change is things that really affect our freedom our ability to be happy and things that affect our eternal destiny and most of us cannot do it on our own in fact none of us can get to heaven on our own we need christ we need a savior you know i had mentioned earlier that you know under certain conditions our freedoms are very very much limited and god understands that think of the crucifixion christ was nailed to the cross he was not free to move his arms he was not free to get up and walk away he was nailed he was restricted his freedom was extremely limited now they taunted him you know if you are the messiah come down from that cross he could have because he is god yes he could have but he suffered as one of us and and he experienced this loss of freedom this loss of ability and and he experienced all kinds of humiliations and sufferings and restrictions and he dies on the cross and even death death restricts our freedom death confines us to the after world but you see by by his resurrection christ conquers all these things he conquers the power of sin he conquers the power of satan he even conquers the power of death and if we are united to christ eventually at the end of time we too will be resurrected we will receive our bodies back and if we are heaven we will be free to socialize to interact to truly love one another as god calls us to love and this will be wonderful this is something we should look forward to this is something that can give us great hope during these difficult times of the pandemic i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen let us let us raise our minds and hearts to god in prayer let us pray for an end to this pandemic so that we can get back to a more normal way of life for this we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer let us pray for religious and civil leaders that they will do what they can to allow people to get back to living their lives the way that we used to before the pandemic we freedom those who may be addicted to various things for those who are struggling with an inclination to sin we pray o lord that you grant them the freedom that they seek enable them to be freed from these attachments we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer let us pray for those who are trapped in purgatory that through our prayers they may be purified and that they may attain to the glory of heaven we pray to the lord for our own personal intentions we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer gracious and loving father almighty and eternal god we thank you for all that you have done for us we thank you for freeing us from our sins and enabling us to have the possibility of making it to heaven we ask that you help us to persevere in following our lord and we ask all this through christ our lord amen blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of
